The murder rate in South Africa is at a 20-year high.
According to the latest annual statistics, more than 27,000 people were killed in a year but only 12% of cases were solved.
Security van heists and robberies are also a serious problem, with many people relying on private security instead of police.
Minister for the police, Bheki Cele, said the government was getting "on top of things".

No, they were handed an extremely unequal economy that was built off foreign (mostly British) control/domination. On top of that, many white South Africans left the country after the end of apartheid and took away wealth which had been generated by centuries of exploited black labor. Yes there is corruption in the ANC, and that must be dealt with to fix the problem, but you can not ignore the historical roots of the problem which cannot be erased in only a few decades of post-apartheid government.

@@samphora6126 Well for starters, The R4 rifles used by the SAPS have barrels so worn they can barely hold a decent group. Since the collapse of Denel land systems, spares have been a disaster. The standard for firearms competency in the police force has been drastically lowered. More chance cops will hit civilians in gunfights by accident cause they are not trained thoroughly to shoot properly under stress. The integration of information networks is about 20 years behind what other countries are doing. Add to that we do not have enough police officers per person in this place. I feel sorry for these poor folks they gonna be sent head-on to deal with the worst this country has to offer who are armed just as well as they are and probably will outnumber them. Add to this our evidence cataloging systems/processes are not up to spec. In some cases people just walk in and steal evidence, the case is then thrown out in court. The forensics backlog is so long its basically non-functional. The bottom line, the SAPS are underpaid, under-equipped, and under-trained. The Govt keeps clipping more off their budget and expecting them to deliver utopia-level safety. We can't blame them, I would not want their job in this country. I hope a new govt after the election starts reforming the SAPS.

This report is from the BBC --- the BBC -- they would never do anything to help Israel, they would hardly ever be a news outlet to help deflect attention away from Israeli problems. While living there even though we were well armed, I was still in constant fear for both myself and my family. It's a dreadful country that has only gotten worse. I would encourage you to educate yourself on the historical crime data from the time of Apartheid to the present day. The entire country is in a state of violent chaos. We hated living there which forced me to resign my position and return to the United States, thereby ending our nightmare.
