I’ve lived in Australia off and on for nearly sixty years and we used to have that overriding Aussie culture as well regardless of your ethnicity we were all Australian and not just Aussie passport holders either. I say “used to have” because it’s being eroded now before my eyes for exactly the same reasons as in the UK. The newer immigrants behave differently and avoid everything Australian. I grew up with every ethnicity around me but we all spoke English, supported the local football teams , listened to the same music and importantly, went to the same schools. Ethnicities that felt they couldn’t conform to Australian society tended rarely to emigrate here. Now though they come and demand everything to make them comfortable here and it’s that entitled attitude that’s slowly destroying our unifying culture and I can’t see us getting it back. Instead of referring to what our countries have as being multicultural we should use the more accurate term, multiethnic and we should demand those ethnicities reside under and within the host country’s culture. Yes it may look a little different overall that’s to be expected and we can start with reigniting a pride in our countries again, an umbrella of pride we all feel comfortable standing under. Unfortunately our governments think they need to destroy that umbrella to make everyone feel at home. It’s the wrong approach.

My friend has "mixed race " children . The black father abandoned his "family " when the youngest was not quite one year old and the oldest four . No financial support or contact since then and the children are both now in their twenties . My friend struggled (to a point of severe physical illness /exhaustion ) to ensure they had a good education -which they did . The one thing that cropped up throughout their education was they were told they were victims of "white oppression " whereas what they were were victims of an absolute deadbeat biological "father" who was not white . my parents came here from Jamaica. i was born in harlesden North west london in 1964. I started infants in1970. The dinner lady Mrs Watts was very racist and used to call me a monkey everyday. Really helpful comment Kenny. We are about the same age. When the mass migration started it was clear in the indigenous community that it was toxic and old fashioned to be racist. All that stuff you speak about happened and I still hear open prejudice in the much older population. What we didn't realise was that the people arriving wouldn't necessarily want to adopt British culture. There was a moment in the 90's when I thought it would work and we would all come together but another 30 years of immigration on top and the whole thing is a mess. The core working class British population has mostly gone from London. So sad, because their culture went with it. You may have Jamaican roots but you are more English than most now!

I'm Irish . When we came to England we worked we integrated. We weren't handed anything for free . . Same as the vast amount of people from India West indies. Ect . We have a different breed now . My parents arrived as single people in Scotland from Ireland in 1946 and 1948. They met in 1953 and married the following year. They moved to England in 1958 and successively lived near Basingstoke later London before finally settling in Birmingham. Like all good Irish Catholics my mother had six siblings and my father five. All but one spent some of all of their adult life in the UK, all having lived in the UK during the late 40s, 50s and 60s. I have asked them all (most are now dead) if as young Irish immigrants to the UK, they ever saw a sign saying “no Irish”. None could ever recall seeing one. So while I have no doubt it happened, I also have no doubt that it was not as common as current identity politics grifters claim it was.
