I'm a Chilean away from many (45) years. I was friend of her son, Angel Parra, recently deceased. So, this video makes me cry. Also from Violeta, try "Volver a los 17", and feel what a passionate woman feelings. The instrument in this vídeo is a "Charango", instrument that have a resonance box made with an armadillo body. More one time, my apologies for my poor English

Violeta, is considered the mother of the New Song movement, that broke from the traditional music that used culture as an export product. Violeta was a writer, a poet a painter, a play writer, a knitter, a cook and a singer and many other things. She also was a music anthropologist and in her early years she collected the traditional music from the countryside and collected works from the indigenous peoples from Rapa Nui, the Andes, the Mapuche .Also traveled extensively studying diverse instruments and incorporating into her creativity what she learned. She introduced charango, zamponas and other andean instruments to urban music. She studied at the Teachers Collegue, she was disliked and despise by the upper ruling class, she become a legend as a protest singer in the 60s and 70s. Long time before Dylan and other. This record Thanks to Life was her last recording before committing suicide in December 1967. She is been translated and sung in multiple languages around the world and is continue studies and listened to by the new generation.

Thanks to life, which has given me so much. It gave me two stars, which when I open them, Perfectly distinguish black from white And in the tall sky its starry backdrop, And within the multitudes the one that I love. Thanks to life, which has given me so much. It gave me hearing that, in all of its reach Records night and day crickets and canaries, Hammers and turbines, bricks and storms, And the tender voice of my beloved. Thanks to life, which has given me so much. It gave me sound and the alphabet. With them the words I think and declare: “Mother,” “Friend,” “Brother” and light shining down on The road of the soul of the one I'm loving. Thanks to life, which has given me so much. It gave me the steps of my tired feet. With them I have traversed cities and puddles Valleys and deserts, mountains and plains. And your house, your street and your garden. Thanks to life, which has given me so much. It gave me this heart that shakes its frame, When I see the fruit of the human brain, When I see good so far from evil, When I look into the depth of your light eyes… Thanks to life, which has given me so much. It gave me laughter and it gave me tears. With them I distinguish happiness from pain The two elements that make up my song, And your song, as well, which is the same song. And everyone’s song, which is my very song. lyricstranslate.com

Dear Frank. First, I'm sorry because I don't speak english but I will try to do my best effort. I can see in your video that you understand spanish language, but if it is not complete I want to say to you that it is absolutely essential to obtain a precise translation of the lyrics of this song. I say this because the lyrics of this song is really a masterpiece. The lyrics is a rare combination of very, very simple words and phrases about life that express a very, very, very profound message. It talks about very simple things in life, for example, as simple as walking, hear the sounds of hammers, watch a person in a crowd, etc. If you think that you really have understood, forget my comment. If not, you can't leave passing by the opportunity of enjoy a true masterpiece. Excuse me if my comment may be not appropriate, but I think that I had to did it because I want to be sure about the understanding of the message of this song. I completely agree with your anthem comment at the end of video. She was amazed by all new age rock/pop music during 60s, specially the Beatles. It is told that she locked herself one week after "yesterday" was released. She loved the song so badly that she hated herself for not being the composer. If you want to explore the most dark, but beautiful side of Violeta, I truly recommend you to react to "El Gavilan". A masterpeace.
