The Double Basses can be tuned an Octave below the Cellos which gives them an Option to play in unison w/ the Cellos more easily.

The lack of bass makes it more prickly, like ice and snow crackling in the winter. Dropping the bass also makes it more ungrounded, like winter frost setting in and killing all the flowers.

The score, which you can see in this video, is actually edited. Originally, in baroque music, usually only one line in bass clef is notated. This is the line you can see here as the Cembalos left hand. The bass instruments (cello, double bass, bassoon etc) play the same, and the numbers show the cembalos right hand. In this case, the editor didn't want the double bass to play as much as the other bass instruments.

Roc Vela Is it possible to play the Solo Violin part down 2 Octaves on a 5 String Double Bass tuned in Fifths? I think Vivaldi's 4 Seasons sound better with more boom on a 5 String Double Bass tuned in Fifths aka 5Bass (Pirastro Obbligato 5ths Tuning strings plus an Obbligato High E Solo String are used for the C1, G1, D2, A2, E3 tuning)

Oh wow the Largo’s very different from my interpretation. I have always thought that it depicted a sunny, windless Saturday in -12C until I heard the 32nd notes (which were missing from the version that I used to listen to).
