Locatelli was born in Bergamo, where he was able to train in the 'cantorie' of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, as a violinist. In 1711, thanks to his exceptional abilities, he was sent to Rome to further his study of music. He probably frequented if not Arcangelo Corelli himself, people very close to the latter such as Giuseppe Valentini. He remained in Rome until 1723, where he enjoyed the favor of Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni and the Pope's butler, Monsignor Camillo Cybo, dedicatee of the XII Concerti Grossi Opera I (1721). Subsequently, starting in 1723 - probably in conjunction with the departure of his patron, Monsignor Cybo from Rome - he began to travel mainly in Germany. However, it becomes very difficult to accurately reconstruct Locatelli's life in these years; some clues are provided by dedications by him or by writings that attest to his presence in this or that city: the dedication to the Venetian patrician Girolamo Michiel Lini in charge of the Concerts of the Violin Art (Op. III); the 12 gold florins received for an exhibition in Munich at the court of the Prince-Elector Karl Albert; the 80 imperial thalers received in December 1728 in Kassel for service rendered at the court of Landgrave Charles I of Hesse-Kassel. In 1729 Locatelli settled in Amsterdam, the city where he lived until his death, rarely leaving. Here he directed the Collegium Musicum, made up of wealthy music lovers for whom he composed and for whom, every Wednesday, he regularly held a concert at their home. When he died in 1764, he left a moderate patrimony, as proof of the success he achieved in managing his skills and fame.
