Vet Tech here: Just to clarify: All cats have Bartonella. Always immediately wash any wounds you receive from any cat, ever. Most reptiles have Salmonella. Always wash your hands and disinfect surfaces in your house after cleaning your reptile enclosure. Don't wait to see a doctor when you have a rash. If your pet is diagnosed with hookworms, you can catch them from your pet. If your pet has hookworms, wash your hands every single time you touch your pet, mop your floors daily, use gloves to pick up your pets poop, don't allow them to lick you or anyone else, and only let your pet poop on puppy pads or a small specific area of your yard that you are able to avoid walking in. Clean, clean, clean. And don't allow small children to play with your infected pet. And one last thing, you can catch scabies from your pet. If your pet has any type of mange, do not cuddle with or sleep with your pet until it is cleared by the vet.

I’m a nurse and we once had a women who CKD and was on dialysis. Any way she had a fistula for dialysis and somehow she go a weird fungal infection in it. It’s a fungus that usual lives in soil. She didn’t garden so the only way the infection control docs thought she could have gotten it was from her dog. The dog goes outside, digs in the ground, she then touches dog then transfers the microbes to her fistula via her hands. Anyway it was a rough one. It wasn’t responsive to anything we through at it. The infection became systemic and I remember one of the consultants saying at one stage she was more mushroom than women (not to the patient obviously, just in conversation with other doctors). Eventually she went to the ICU and never came back. Her heart failed. So sad to think something as simple as cuddling your dog can kill you when you don’t have a good immune system. Normally this sort of fungus is not an issue in humans but because of her co morbidities her body couldn’t fight it off, not even with all the antibiotics and antifungals etc. we could give her. Very sad.

0:30 At least it wasn't Yersinia pestis! A friend of mine was camping in the Sierra Nevada mountains and as he was getting ready for bed a he discovered a squirrel in his tent. He let it out and climed into his sleeping bed. Some time later he started having flu like symptoms. He remembered a warning sign that said if you start having flu like symptoms later you should see your doctor. He said his doctor looked a bit concerned as he told the story of finding the squirrel and he drew some blood and left. He was gone a really long time, like nearly an hour and when he came back he was wearing some heavy duty PPE. Paramedics, also in PPE had a stretcher with a plastic tent over it. When he was told to climb in he became really alarmed. Turns out he had The Plague! As in "Bring out your dead" middle ages in Europe Plague. He recovered fully but it was pretty scary. Every person alive today is a descendant of someone who survived the Plague. As a result humans have a better chance of recovering from it than Middle Age Europeans. Also, antibiotics help a bit.

This is why I do not let my patients lick my face... also nearly caught lepto once in vet school. I'd examined a dog that had been sent to me (I was doing my emergency medicine rotation and the day shift people wanted to go home) by the internal medicine professor who AFTER my clinical exam said "Oh by the way do not touch him without gloves I suspect he has lepto". Well... thanks for giving me an accurate description before sending the dog my way, sir.

A friend had surgery on both knees. The first went really well and the second was disastrous, filled with an infection that kept getting worse. Turns out it was a type of staph typically found in dog ear infections. They had a dog and took it to the vet who confirmed it was the same strain.

see that makes me nervous, not your comment but things I have seen in the past. I have eczema and I read about a woman who got a form of staph, lost 3 limbs from it, the staph is from dogs that licked her and eczema is open wounds. I love dogs but if they lick me. I have to make sure its not where I have open wounds. It just feels so much more then a skin disease then I think many people realize. You're more susceptible to infection with open wounds.

I grew up on a farm & with a nack for keeping things from dieing we would get all sorts of critters for me to save with my weird methods. I started doing vet tech work due to this... Germ study, microscope work, etc. There's a ton of cross contamination possibilities with people and animals. Regular washing not just hands with anti bacterial soap but household scrubbing with tea tree type soap and/or bleach mixed with basic blue dish soap will deeply minimize such things. Any surface they touch can become containatrd with something gross. Yes we love them however we must remember they are animals and not humans.

Story Time! I caught Bartonella when I was 19. Unfortunately, I found out about it after I started losing my eyesight. Ophthalmologists failed me so I went to the ED where a neuroopthalmologist was on call (I was his youngest patient in a while), and helped determine the answer after an MRI and a spinal tap to do CSF cultures. It turns out that fever was, while more common, the more tame signs of a Bartonella infection. I was one of the unlucky few that had the infection reach my brain and cause inflammation around my optic and oculomotor nerves, taking away my vision for a couple months. I'm all better now. The cause of it was fleas (no kittens, just adult cats -- but my childhood home had a major flea infestation). I never let my cats out now that I live on my own.

Yes, having a similar problem, though when I told the doctors, that I think I got the infection from the Calico semi- ferral kittens that i began feeding by hand, and rubbed my eyes alot.. I think I got something from them, because my right eye is now blurred, and when I went to Emergency, they told me I was crazy. because Allergy and infection from cats isn't the problem. Then: they attributed the problem to maybe a form an MS Flareup.. Problem is,, that diagnosis was Seven years ago, haven't had any problems with that, and as I write this, my eye is slightly weeping and slightly itchy, though not severe. Personally, I think it's a case of a bacterial infection the the two kitties I was feeding. Any thoughts..??

Salmonella has been found on dogs too. The Mexican hairless can develop it on their skin if it’s not bathed regularly and I knew a family who got a Sharpie puppy and they All got sick Then they finally took the puppy who is almost a year old to the vet The vet told them Sharpie’s Develop salmonella under these rolls very easily. That you must wash under the rolls Everyday to prevent the bacteria from developing into salmonella. Both breeds develop a gross smell that most owners would know that the dog needs a bath. But there are all kinds of pet owners out there

I own a few dairy goats. I once was at the vet and a guy had a huge bucking bull in a trailer who he told the vet was a pet. The bull was used in rodeos but he was willing to spend money on him due to being a sweet pet. The bull did appear calm in the trailer, but the vet never got in the trailer, lol. Can't remember what was wrong but he was going to have to go to a specialist to be treated.

I have hp. 6:33 my cockatiel was determined to be the culprit after 2 hospitalizations with double pneumonia. It has been one of the most heartbreaking experiences. My dad has my bird now which means I can’t visit my dad. I had to throw away anything I couldn’t wash and move from the room I was in to prevent continued inflammation. My best friend got cutaneous larval hookworms on a trip to Mexico we went on. We both work together in a veterinary hospital and she had this weird rash on her calf, kind of raised, circular. She thought maybe she hit some coral, it was that shape and we were in the water constantly. One of the faculty vets looked at it and said she should go to the doctor and she went the next day. They had to get some books out but with a good history taking and some book work they figured it out! They Rx’d a dewormer but I guess we are a dead end host so even if not treated she’d prob have been ok. But….ewwww.

Some really good information in this one... My own mother was VERY nearly killed by "Cat scratch fever" (it's what they legit' called it in our area) and it took a shot of (I believe) tetracycline at the time (80's)... I WOULD like to add Leptospirosis to your list of "What I should look up next"... It's usually in the tropical/sub-tropical regions, and spawns around stagnant water... BUT with global warming, who knows??? It's EXTREMELY infectious and fairly dangerous, though treatable. The thing is ANY mammal can catch it and spread it... SO puppies, gerbels, rabbits, goats, cats, etc... If it has fur, it can bring it right TO YOU... AND if left untreated, it IS deadly to literally everything... You CAN just look up "Lepto" and (at least in the U.S.) every search engine immediately brings up the CDC's own listing "Leptospirosis" to the top of the list, at least in my experience... SO it's not terribly difficult to find out about, and get started for research... NOT that you should even depend on the CDC as your "one-stop shop"... BUT it's a fine starting place... get you the basics and some references and you have what you need to move forward in depth... ;o)

Great info! I often rescue stray cats and dogs and I give first aid to birds and other animals that have been hurt, so I’ll probably contract some type of disease from them some day. I got cat scratch disease when I was 7 or 8. I had lymph node swelling and pain at the lymph node site. I remember having the lymph node area drained and also getting antibiotics. It went away but I do wonder if that episode played a role in the autoimmune disease mess I’m dealing with now.

My husband had cat scratch disease in the 1960s. He was quite sick with it. He had a biopsy done of the swollen lymph node. I think the doctor thought he had Hodgkin’s disease but when the biopsy came back negative they decided it was cat scratch disease.

They discuss different parasites, sometimes covering a paper about a particular parasite. The last part of the show is a case study. I got scratched and bitten by a family cat. Within 8 hours I was in the ER getting IV antibiotics. My family physician put me on oral antibiotics for a month. I was so scared I was going to lose my hands because they both swelled up really bad. I could not use them for over a week. I was off work for a week. Red streaks went up both my arms. Even a medium fish tank, like a 40 gallon, is likely to have you elbow deep into the tank while cleaning, so the water is likely to get down your glove. Though I do remember one time having a finger get warm after cleaning my tank once, I think I had a hangnail bleed maybe earlier that day. Lasted maybe a day or two and didn't get worse than that. I assumed it was nitrogen fixing bacteria that live in the aquarium that got in there.

I didn’t know the bird thing was so rare! My mother has it, she has to avoid feather pillows like they’re the literal plague because she gets such bad inflammation. As soon as you started saying the symptoms I yelled, "turtle!" That was an easy one and why my mom never let me have a pet turtle. I thought the bird one was going to be histoplasmosis but lucky for that man it wasn't that bad. I remember a graduate student working with penguins at a zoo or aquarium caught histoplasmosis and even ended up in the ICU because it became so severe. My understanding is that people with bird allergies are actually sensitive to the dander that comes off the feathers and not so much the feathers themselves. My canary and bunny's vet office would actually give you print outs of the zoonotic diseases you could catch from your pet species. And you bet I said "eww!" at the worm one but never stopped eating my snack 😂

I instantly thought reptiles. The info sheet is a great idea. I have a small hobby farm; dairy goats, chickens, geese, ducks, etc. 90 miles from me is a vet practice that not only treats livestock, but exotics. They once had a baby giraffe in their horse barn. Mom had rejected the calf so the vet techs were giving it goat's milk around the clock. They should have a sheet like that available to their patient's owners.

We got a kitten from a friend when I was in middle school. Both my dad and I ended up with Cat Scratch Fever/Disease. Crazy thing is that my mom had given the kitten a bath and got scratched and bit a lot but she didn't get sick. My friend had the mom cat and the other kittens and it turns out the whole litter was infected. I'd be interested in your thoughts on this. I'm 51 now and over the past 25 years have been diagnosed with a laundry list of disabling illnesses, including autoimmune issues. My dad was recently diagnosed with an autoimmune issue also. I'm curious if the CSD would have primed us for future AI issues or we already had AI issues (just unkown)?

A couple you didn't mention: Toxoplasmosis, which you can get from cat feces. Human infections can be asymptomatic, but it can be dangerous for pregnant women. There's also some evidence linking human infection with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Toxoplasma gondii has a weird life cycle in cats and mice. Mice have an instinctive fear of cats and an aversion to the smell of cat urine, but when they're infected with T. gondii they lose the fear, which makes them more likely to be caught and eaten. The parasite then infects the cat, which excretes cysts, which can then infect more mice. Psittacosis is another one. It's carried by birds, and can cause pneumonia in people.

Re Toxoplasmosis - seeing as to get a zoonotic infection you literally have to get faeces in your mouth, the most common animal-to-human transmission is through consumption of veg grown in places where animals are free to roam (and poop) or when animal dung is used as fertiliser and the veggies are not then washed sufficiently. It is not generally a threat to uncompromised immune systems of westerners. If it was, rest assured, the big pharmas would be marketing you their products already!! Foodborne transmission by eating undercooked, contaminated meat (especially pork, lamb, and venison) or shellfish (like oysters, clams, and mussels) is way more probable.

Biopsies came back as non cancerous and the drs were stumped. Went to the go a couple of times and thankfully the last one I saw had previously seen a case of cat scratch fever

Sioban's horror of human hookworms (Necator americanus) was hilarious to me. I actually paid good money ($3000 the first time) to buy 150 hookworm larvae, which I applied to my forearms over a period of several months. Why??? Because they got rid of my psoriasis within about seven months, and it's never come back!! No other treatments whatsoever. After five years I got a second round of worms, and this time the price had dropped to $450 for 135 larvae. I love my wormies!! They're my favorite medical intervention ever. Total cure with no effort - no pills or shots or creams or dietary changes, no side effects except for an itchy rash for about a week at the insertion site. And as a bonus, they enhance my immune system because they balance my Th1 to Th2 ratio - this is how they work to calm down the autoimmune reaction that leads to psoriasis, and to many other allergic and autoimmune conditions as well. Not everyone can tolerate them but for those who can, they are a godsend. Ain't nature great?

one way to lower the chance of bird keeper's lung is to have really good filters, and not have a high population density of birds. especially of powdery birds (cockatoos and pigeons are powdery). also, the high levels of dust ca be bad for them, so FILTERS and not too many birds

We had a cat and when she was two years old, she bit my mum's leg during a mad playing session, because my mum had diabetes, she ended up in hospital for three weeks on a drip. We had to have a couple of the cat's teeth removed that were infected because she was a rescue cat born in the wild. We had her for 22 years and luckily no more problems.

It's extremely hard to totally get rid of bacteria just by washing. You need soap and vigorous scrubbing to reduce it significantly. For any serious pathogens, you would need something like bleach if you are trying to clean a larger surface because it's just too hard to do thoroughly otherwise. Commenting to give a PSA that when you are exposed to something potentially dangerous, you need to scrub your hands really well.

We have one cat that's a carrier to this. I got scratched- a pinprick you really couldn't see and it didn't bleed. Nearly instantly my hand began swelling. It burned so bad!! Within six hours I was running a fever, felt fluish and punky. After ten days of antibiotics the infection finally resolved. Fast forward ten years and same cat same scenario!!😮

My late wife was a biologist and she and I would get into long, graphic discussions that tended to make other people rather uncomfortable. I had two soft-shell turtles. If I ever held them - which was rare because they HATED it - I washed my hands thoroughly. Same with cleaning their tank. To make sure I didn't forget, I named them SAM and ELLA. I never got that but I did get 2 infections from cat bites. But they showed *very* quickly, like about 12 hours after it happened. I could see a growing red oval around where the cat had bit me (it wasn't his fault, someone else was injuring him by accident. Long story) Long story longer, I'd fostered cats and had my own cats for decades by then, and it had never happened before, so I covered it with a couple of bandaids and went to work. It started tingling and burning within a couple of hours, and two guys at the office said I needed to go to urgent care. I went to tell my boss and *he* had totally heard of cat bites turning ugly too. I went to Urgent Care, wrote that I was bitten by a cat, and waited. And waited. And waited. I watched it get worse and sting and part of my hand was going numb by the time I saw a doctor FOUR HOURS LATER. I probably should have pulled off the bandages and asked the receptionists, "Does this look bad to you? A cat bit me and it's getting bigger." But I still didn't think it was serious. But the doc put the fear of losing body parts in me, regaling me with stories of people who'd lost feet and hands. Plus, when he pressed next to the wound that was weeping, creepy gray pus came out with little black specks in it. The doc said that because cats have sharp, small fangs, it's like being injected with whatever bacteria they have in their mouths, and (his words) "95% of the time, it'll get infected. So just go to the doctor when you're bitten." What I'd missed all those years that I *was* bitten, I didn't have that reaction because it was a scratching bite, or a bite that didn't break the skin. Lesson learned.

In nursing school they stressed reminding patients who were exterior painters of large building or homes, to make sure they share this with information with their health care providers. When they paint gutters or other parts of the structures where there are a number of pigeons, & their droppings. Histoplasmosis is an infection caused by breathing in spores of a fungus often found in bird and bat droppings. Patients usually get it from breathing in these spores when they become airborne during demolition or cleanup projects. Now wearing a mask is not as rare as it was before the pandemic, for clean up tasks.

I contracted an M. marinum infection by caring for a large, fresh water and fully planted aquarium that required daily care. I also grew roses and typically had scratches from thorns all summer long. My fish tank was a 75 gallon tank, and I would get up on a step ladder and plunge both arms into the tank to care for the plants inside. We believe the M. marinum entered my skin through the rose thorn scratches. My condition was misdiagnosed for years as prurigo nodularis and was treated for years with steroids that only made the rash worse. My dermatologist refused to listen to me when I asked if my fish keeping or rose growing hobbies had involvement in this rash. Finally, an infectious disease doctor listened to me and placed me on appropriate therapy to treat the suspected infection. Immediately, the nodules began to heal! I have scarring and some remaining thickened areas where the nodules once were. But I can live with that. My skin looks so much better and I’m grateful I finally found effective treatment with a provider who listened to me.

I've 16 cats at present, all were strays. Never had any health issues. We bring home stray and feral cats and kittens vaccinate them and get then spayed and neutered. Right from the beginning they recieve flea and worm treatment. Keeping the house clean and their boxes cleaned routinely allows for them and ourselves to be healthy.

As a rat owner, I'm lucky that I can basically control what my pets get exposed to. But I do have to think about hantavirus. It's not uncommon in some wild rodent populations. It's asymptomatic and very contagious between rodents. Transmission to humans is rarer and requires direct contact with an infected rodent's bodily fluids. So if my clothes come in contact with, say, traces of squirrel droppings, I'm unlikely to get directly infected, but my rats could catch it, and then I could catch it while playing with them. It's kind of interesting.

Some years back I sent my stud dog with a handler across Canada to get his Championship. When he got home with his championship certificate he also arrived back with bloody diarrhea. It wasn't long before all my other dogs came down with this too. Upon submitting a stool sample to my veterinarian for testing, turns out he was now carrying hookworm & giardia (beaver fever too), which spread to all my other dogs. Turns out I had to treat my entire kennel along with the bedding of Cedar shavings, all because the dog handlers had to use a certain fenced area for their dog's toilet.

Have things changed? Born in 55, till the age of 16 was catching by hand, handling, swimming in compromised water, etc, breaks in the skin, abrasions, chiggers, ticks all over, and so on all sorts of animals. Others were also. I cannot recall of anyone with an infection. But nowadays I've heard of many issues. New pathogens or reduction of immunity by the herd? Thanks!👍

In my community, a young woman found a stray kitten on a downtown street. She took the kitten to the shelter. She returned to the shelter a few days later to inquire about adopting the kitten. She adopted the kitten and took it home. After a few days in her home, the kitten seemed ill. She took the kitten to the vet. The kitten had rabies! Now many many individuals need a rabies shot.

I dealt with a subcutaneous parasite for months, that moved at night leaving trails of inflamed skin.trying everything finally took ivermectin prescribed by a great caregiver at a local quick care. It was dead in 4 days and the trails dissolved. Never found out exactly what it was, but boy oh boy was that horrible. ✌🏼

Warm and moist conditions are important to allow survival of A. caninum during the free-living stages of its lifecycle, so it is largely restricted to temperate, tropical, and subtropical regions. In parts of the world where these climatic requirements are met such as Sri Lanka, Southeast Asia, and Malaysia, A. caninum is the main cause of hookworm disease in canines. The hookworm species that commonly infects humans are Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus. The treatment of choice for hookworm infestation are thiabendazole, mebendazole, or pyrantel citrate (in both humans and pets).
