Frankly it's pretty amazing that all the big power engines last like they do and still drive on the street! Be it Steve Morris's stuff, Proline, Reher Morrison and so on, so many are making the power that top fuel was making not all that long ago and those guys were tear their stuff down and refreshing every pass.

The uneducated will always rag on the platform, simply because they are ignorant of what is going on at this level. They think they know better, but when you tell them a valve train set of hardware for a SMX or similar engine is $25,000, they start to shuffle their feet and move on. These are a very long ways away from a junkyard ls with an ebay turbo.

Almost every box that high performance speed pieces parts come in have a disclaimer printed on it stating; these parts have no warranty due to the fact that stuff happens and stuff breaks, especially on the ragged edge of racing!👀 You push parts to the highest point of performing and at that level you have to expect breakage. The sun comes up in the morning and parts fail...... Bring extras and bring credit cards and cash as well. We eat 🍔 food, vehicles eat parts, the natural progression of things. Oh, and prayers if you like, luck if you believe and superstition I've seen have its part in many different types of things and ways. Thanks again and I love how most of the people are more than willing to help their fellow racers in need, society could really learn something from that awesome altruistic attitude!👍

Stuff breaks in racing, its just a fact of life u will find the weakest link or something u missed. Any experienced racer or builder of any type will tell u that sometimes things just break or die, it can be the strongest thickest thing in the car and still breakage can happen. Totally sucks but it is what it is and time to make it even tougher on the rebuild, we have all been there and feel your pain bro.

Why do things break? Everything is on the bleeding edge of the last drop of performance and its a balancing act to go fast and keep everything together. Squeeze a bit more out here and the strain will find the next weakest link. This is the way.

Not wanting to assume what you are implying...since Steve and Tom have several wins over several events with SMX power, are you saying they don't need to run because we know how fast the SMX cars are? Or, are you saying the SMX in the Viper broke because that's what SMX's do? High power = high failure rate. Doesn't matter gas, diesel, methanol, electric, etc. The more power you push through a mechanical device, the more you're going to break things. Now, if an engine or manufacturer has consistent breakage with the same part, then there is probably a design flaw or something. As far as I've heard reported, the SMX has not had failures in the same area each time. Sometimes it is valve springs that have been wet/rusty that fail. Sometimes it is a bad engine tune that burns a piston/cylinder/head. The latest sounds like a camshaft broke, but we don't really know yet. All this to say, if you're trying to place blame on one engine design/builder for making bad engines, I think you're being a bit of a sideline quarterback. I don't think you could point to any builder and show that none of their engines ever fail. If there is one, their customers probably aren't pushing them to this level of drag and drive torture.

The Taylors goal was never to be the quickest car ever. Then they would have chosen a car with at least decent aerodynamics, instead of an brick from '55 and not called the project "Quest for the 6s". Dennis said recently it's all about doing more with less. Same reason they stay ordinary BBC instead of some super expensive custom engine. D'n'Ds are often won on reliability, more than having the absolute fastests car that show up for the race.
