Today, I installed a short throw shifter on my Dodge Viper. This install ended up being quite difficult unfortunately. I hope this video helps save others some time.

Hey Rob I’m dropping the trans in my ‘03 Viper to replace the slave cylinder. From what I can see I could do a short throw without bothering with the rivets since the trans is out. Kind of a “as long as it’s out” type of thing. I really appreciate the Viper content, it’s as rare as the cars themselves.

Yeah that boot is a bitch with those rivets. The IPSCO shifter kit came with push pins to replace the rivets, but I still needed to order a new shift boot because I destroyed it while getting those rivets out :( Glad the content is helping! I have some more coming soon with the Viper!

Thank you for the video! I just picked up a 2003 Viper with the extra friction in the shift rod so I'm planning to install an IPSCO with stronger centering springs. Now I know exactly what to do!

Glad I could help! I was actually surprised there weren’t videos of gen 3-4 installs. Make sure you buy a new shift boot. There’s no way to get those rivets out without destroying it.

@@RobsHouse Thanks Rob! I took my bezel off and saw someone ripped off the original boot already haha. Happy New Year, hope you're getting to take a break! -Yue

@@yueibm Oh awesome! That makes it way easier. Use push pins or something to secure a new one and make it easy to remove haha. Happy New Year to you as well! I'll be back to posting after New Years :)

I brought my Gen 5 to a friend to do a shifter in and same thing with the rivets. Major pain in the ass. After all the shifter wouldn't go into reverse AND the gears were so tight I said take it out. I've never had a shifter that tight before.

He probably didn't align it properly. Did it come with a centering plate? I've seen that happen on Corvettes where people don't use the alignment plate and the shifter ends up off-center which can obstruct gears.

Hello Rob…and thanks for providing video content and tutorials on Viper topics that most just write about. It takes extra time and ambition, and genuinely appreciate the candid approach you also seem to take…even when things are not #easy…even for you. (And more realistic…as these are the things an average human will also likely experience, assuming they are not a master mechanic / technician). On this shift knob segment, you had (2) wrenches to LOOSEN the lock nut away from the knob / stalk. I see there is both a FLAT section on this metal stalk to get the one wrench around, and obviously the lock nut has multiple flat sides, for the 2nd wrench. Since I am a paint-by-numbers human when it comes to anything technical or skilled like this, but can you possibly share which -DIRECTION- you were turning the lock nut (wrench) to loosen / break the seal to be able to hand turn the shifter piece off??? (And assume you are keeping the 1st wrench on the metal stalk STATIONARY while you are only addressing + turning the lock screw too, correct? Yes and concur…the movement did look “violent” in your own words…haha…but wanted to confirm before doing damage and / or locking nut (more)….if that is a thing. FYI : The movement on nut looks like it was towards you or the drivers door to unlock the nut - is this correct? (Re: Lefty-Loosey cliche?) Keep up the solid and helpful work and hope to see your channel grow!!! (FYI…just trying to remove these 2 dash pieces for refinish project on them).

I'm glad the videos are helpful! So for the lock nut, it is tightened up against the bottom of the shaft of the shifter. When I broke it loose, I was doing 'lefty-loosey' on the shifter shaft and 'righty-tighty' on the lock nut. That is because I wanted to move the lock nut down the threads toward the shifter assembly and away from the shaft. Then, you'd do the opposite when reinstalling. Thread the shifter on, and get it centered (so that the numbers on the top point in the right direction/aren't crooked). Then, hold it with one wrench and tighten the lock nut by moving the lock nut up the threads ('lefty-loosey'). Once it's kind of tight, I usually give it one extra push with both wrenches in opposite directions just to lock it in place well. You may have to do it a few times when you reinstall the shifter, as it's easy to throw the shifter askew (with respect to the angle of the top knob) in the process.

Thanks for the video. I’m working on this issue right now too. My shifter on my gen 3 Mamba looks/feels exactly how you described and I hate it. It doesn’t spring back to center and is askew. Thanks for unveiling all the hurdles!

Nice work! Thinking about doing this mod on my gen3 but I think I will start with a 1" lowered arm and see how it feels first.
@RobsHouse
@RobsHouse 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah if you buy the IPSCO lowering arm, you can reuse it with their short throw if you end up buying the short throw shifter later on.

Haha it's just an aftermarket carplay-enabled head unit from Sound Storm Lab (same company as Boss audio). It's actually pretty cheap. I think I paid $225 for it? It also came with a backup camera and a tag bracket, so I have the camera mounted essentially at the top of my license plate in the rear. I had to do something about the stock head unit because I love Apple CarPlay/phone connectivity. I did a full audio system upgrade in a later video if you want to check that out.

Hello Rob! Would you please tell me what head unit that is (make/model)? I love that it's removable. I looked for an install video on your channel and didn't see one.
@RobsHouse
@RobsHouse 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I didn't do an install video. It's the same as basically any head unit. You need a harness adapter for whatever car you have (in my case, a gen 3 viper). Solder the wires from the unit to their corresponding harness wires. They should be labeled or the harness will come with a color legend for the wires. That's pretty much it. You should also get a plastic mounting adapter for whichever car you are putting it in. It's basically the same process as any aftermarket head unit install. Here's the link to the unit: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08V53NQPT/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
