Yeah, I'm way more comfortable in rattler country than I would be in areas with a lot of non-rattler venomous snakes. I've seen probably 10 or 15 rattlesnakes close by in my travels in the USA, and all of them made their presence known well before I got to them. We have copperheads where I live, and I'm regularly in cottonmouth territory, but they're not too scary to me. But like India or Australia? That's pretty creepy. A lot of those snakes are very deadly, aggressive, unafraid of people, and stealthy. I certainly wouldn't camp as much as I do here, haha!
@LizzardGirl7134 жыл бұрын
what's especially cute (and useful) is that many other North American snake species have adopted tail shaking as a "hey, I'm here" warning. in the absence of a rattle, these snakes will hit their tails against the ground, leaf litter, or dry grass in order to make noise. for venomous snakes, this is just another threat display of "I can bite and it won't end well for you"; for non-venomous species like gopher snakes, this is a form of mimicry to trick predators into thinking that they're up against a more dangerous species.
@The_sinner_Jim_Whitney4 жыл бұрын
@@LizzardGirl713 Almost every non-venomous snake, be it ratsnake, (especially) racer, kingsnake, even the lowly garter snake (or ribbon snakes or water snakes)- every damn snake I’ve ever had experience catching has exhibited this behavior at least once. It’s a pretty valuable defense: not only might I mistake it for a rattler and leave, but it helps spread their musk around, which will also result in them being put down (whether they bite me or not). I’m in the Appalachian USA, by the way, and you’re right. Where are you?

*”Keeled scales warns other preditors of their deadly venom”* Hognoses: ”I’m gonna do what’s called a pro-gamer move”
@zottelhuehs63754 жыл бұрын
For those that don't know: Hognose snakes are harmless colubrids. Though they are venomous, it is not medically relevant for humans (unless you are allergic, much like a bee sting). On top of that Hognoses are not known for defensive bites and even if they were to bite, they are rear fanged which makes injecting the venom a lot less efficient (rear fangs are enlarged teeth that are used to chew the venom into prey). Western Hognoses are relatively common in the pet trade. For those that speak German: They are called Hakennasennattern (plural). Which I personally find is a hilarious name. Haken = hook, Nase = Nose, Natter = a group of snake species (includes corn snakes etc.) If you want to learn more I recommend visiting either snake discovery or Clint's reptiles here on KZbin.

Also vipers aren't the only venomous snakes in Canada. Colubrids like garter snakes are actually venomous. The deliver the venom with their rear fangs. The thing is it's an incredibly mild venom that in humans only causes mild irritation similar to a bee sting (unless you are allergic to the venom). It's mainly used to incapacitate invertebrates like snails, slugs and leeches or small vertebrates like mice and fish.

@that1valentian7696 жыл бұрын
martin saulsberry Why not? They are fascinating with one of the most interesting and exciting species rediscovery stories in the animal kindgdom. They are thought to be related to the first fish to grow specialized fins for semi terrestrial utility. They have reminded largely unchanged for millions of years. Since at least before the the terrestrial dinosaurs became extinct.
@DerpyDuckAnimation6 жыл бұрын
Well not all coelacanths remained unchanged. Coelcacanths came in great variety before most of them went extinct. Yet it is still amazing that a few species still remain after millions of years

Maybe a video on Bothrops? They're not very well known snakes but very interesting and super dangerous. Even most venomous snake owners would rather not own them. I had the pleasure of seeing a Bothrops Moojeni in real life and it was one of the scariest experiences of my life (there was no glass). I didn't know anything about this genus until that. They're also very valuable in the medical field right now. I know there's an island where a lot of Bothrops live that has been completely abandoned because of how dangerous they are. Pretty cool.

In mythological terms, vipers almost sound like lower-tier versions of wyverns (since they don't have legs and wings) and tinier versions of Basilisks (the Harry Potter kind, not the kind that are like a chicken/lizard hybrid that can also paralyze with its gaze).

From what I've read, Gaboon vipers are indeed likely to be the heaviest viper species along with the Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake (Crotalus adamanteus), but the Eastern Diamondback can exceed 2 metres in length and the Bushmasters (genus Lachesis) of South America are the longest vipers, reaching 3 metres or more.

Pretty educational video, which is rare for snakes. HOWEVER, you failed to say there are many nonvenomous species that have keeled scales, such as several species of Hognoses and Ratsnakes. Secondly, I don't know why Copperheads are under the 10 "most venomous" snakes in NA. Copperheads have some of the weakest venoms in NA... Lastly, the couple times you included some comment about snakes being scary really wasn't necessary. This kind of fear mongering (though this video was better than most) is why society is so misinformed about snakes and why so many innocent snakes are killed every day.

Hey, I love your content. Could you do instead of an animal, a topic for once? I'd like to see how teeth adapted to specific needs. Which animals can regrow teeth? (honorable mention to the buzzsawfish) Why do cats have far less teeth than dogs? Do bears have differen teeth based on their diet?
@GranRey-06 жыл бұрын
edi Just my theory, cats tend to lick their food off the bone with their rough tongue, and their teeth are used mainly to grab prey while hunting. Dogs use their teeth to tear chunks off their food and to grab prey. So I feel they need more slicing teeth to cut flesh so they can eat...but is still like Danielle to tell us the real reason.
