BTW , My beloved Bengals play the 4-2-5, and here are some things I observed one point the Bengals had out the Starting NG-BJ Hill, Starting DT-Sheldon Rankins, and starting SLCB Mike Hilton-Needlesss to say teams ran all over the Bengals even with 2 stellar linebackers. Also, the Nickel must!!! be a good tackler or long runs and quick slant featuring RAC are a huge problem. It's amazing how much better the Bengals defense " improved" after the starters returned....

Biggest Problem with 3-4 is the DE’s. Traditionally they are big and unathletic run stoppers who are limited in pass rush. U rely on your olb’s getting to the qb. Note: jj watt wrecked this theory and changed the position. But later in his career he became strictly a pass rusher who gave up gaping plays in the run game

The 4-2-5 defense is "starting" to make it's way into the NFL?? It's probably been the most common defense in the League over the last few years.
@learn2xpand8625 ай бұрын
Yeah idk why he said that
@AntCastillo5 ай бұрын
I think he meant as a base and not as a sub package. Most teams still base out of 4-3 or 3-4. It’s most common because 11P is king in the NFL but you’re starting to see more teams playing 4-2-5 vs bigger personnel groups.
@learn2xpand8625 ай бұрын
@@AntCastillo I agree with that, I think the way he said it made it seem like it is a completely new thing
@CMCFLYYY5 ай бұрын
@@AntCastilloYep he should've done then separately. 4-2-5 can be a nickel defense or a base defense. As a nickel defense you see it run with a nickel corner vs the pass, very common already in the NFL. But 4-2-5 as a base defense typically doesn't have a nickel corner, it's a * position and usually manned by a safety type. And because it's used vs 2 TEs that * player needs to be able to both play the run like a LB in the box and also know all the match zone rules in case it's a pass. The 4-2-5 base is the one used more in college but is starting to seep into the NFL.

Odd means 3 or 5 guys on the line. Even is 4 or 6. 34 has variations. NT 2 DE's or 2 DT's. There used to be a 34 technique called TNT. Tackle Nose Guard Tackel. They lined up over both Guards and Center. It doesnt necessarily mean what gap they are in.

@@machineunit don't confuse a higher level of QB skill for a lack of running. Look at what happened to "all we can do is run Mich" vs Texas. You can't ever play catch up if you can't throw. That level of poor QB play simply didn't exist in the pac-12. Most of the teams are still running first in the west they just have better balance.

@davidmorrison5186 that was an awful example lmaoooo. Michigan's identity this season is nit the same as last season. Last 3 seasons, Michigan proved my point. Michigan doesn't have an elite run game this season so you aren't making the point you thought you were making lmao

I play 4-3 in german football. You kann roll into Cover 3 with either the F or $ rolling down, or Cover 3 Cloud with one CB high, the other low, or bring one Safety down into the Box and the other in the deep middle. or 2 Read. I think it is versatile.

TL;DR/NOTES (because I forget things) - Techs, 0 - C, 2 - OG, 4 - OT; 2i/4i correlate to inside shoulder. ODD numbers go to OUTside shoulders. - The center has "two outside shoulders" - Gaps, A gap b/w C/OG, B gap b/w OG/OT, C gap b/w OT/whomever else.

I’m thinking of coaching a team of kids and I think the 4-3 will be the easiest to implement and explain. I think it’s the most versatile with less movement to explain outside of the main task like holding the edge and how to play the strong side not to mention relying on a dominant nose tackle doesn’t seem too sound at this level
@OldVet674 ай бұрын
I'd like to consider the Jacksonville Jaguars defense because they were created differently than other NFL defenses. The coaches decided to build up a deep number of very good Defensive Linemen. They really only have one Nose Tackle and he is not a dominant entity (Hamilton). They drafted 2 Defensive Ends that are more suited for the 4-3 style (270ish lbs), a Defensive End/Edge development player. They signed Amik Armstead as a DE/Edge rusher and have Josh Allen and Travon Walker. then depth players. The defense also has two really good linebackers, but lack depth and the outside linebackers are used more as permanent defensive linemen. Defensive backs lack talent and speed. Veterans are older and slower and rookies make up this group with very few in the middle of these groups. With the top corner out with injury, these backs have been gashed regardless of how many are in coverage. Putting myself in the DC's position, I would try to use a 5-2 scheme with the linemen inside focused on run before pass rush. My outside linemen will be constantly hitting the back in pass rushing mode. This makes double teaming linemen difficult and it is the one group where I have depth. My linebackers would cover zone and look for the slants. Corners will cover man. My thought is that with a 5 man rush, we have a better chance of stopping the quarterback before the receivers can break away from coverage. Currently our 3 and 4 man rush isn't reaching and offenses have been able to double team (the rotation of Allen, Walker, and Armstead) with little impact from the inside. Placing 5 on that line will force more one on one matchups against good edge rushers. Am I making a good argument for a 5-2 or what am I missing?

Personally, I could only see something like that working if you are facing a run-heavy or option style offense. You are really leaving yourself vulnerable on the back end with only 3 DBs. Linebackers would have to be incredibly versatile and you would need like 6 or 7 backers on your roster to execute that.

Those will be hard for someone who is just understanding the game to learn from. You want basic formations and basic movements. You have an ego and it’s common for coaches.
