In my opinion, this comparison is somehow not fair, like comparing apples with oranges. Animal speed should be compared in separate categories: on land, in air, in water, etc. It's like saying I'm faster than you because I jump from a plane at 100 mph and you are running down the street with 10 mph... Birds in dive have gravitational acceleration as an advantage, it is not a fair comparison.

Several years ago National Geographic decided to run a series of experiments to establish the speed of their dive/stoop, as rudimentary equipment was unreliable when trying to monitor this. It was then thought that 140/5mph was the top speed, however, within the space of a couple of weeks it became evident that the falcon, when given ever more challenging situations was able to adjust it’s body shape to achieve higher speeds, that series of tests topped out at 185mph. Since then further tests have been carried out, with far more accurate equipment and the last tests were recording speeds of 288 to 290mph!! It is thought that speeds in excess of 300mph could be achieved if more difficult experiments were tried, but then, what’s the point? The peregrine has proved itself and does all it needs to in order to hunt successfully! By comparison humans have the advantages of applied sciences on their side, technology and IT!

I just have to say something about these animal speed or ability lists that are confusing people. For instance, human speeds vary widely. Some people would struggle to run 10 MPH while the record is I believe 27 MPH for the fastest sprinters. They say the average human sprint speed is around 13 MPH. So why do we think that animals are any different. Not all quarter horses can run 55 MPH. Not all lions can run 50 MPH. Not all cheetahs can run 75 MPH. Also there is other animals that should be on the list. Like the ostrich, greyhound, impala ,gazelle ,Mako shark and many more. There is way more than just 10 animals that can run ,swim or fly faster than 40 MPH . I hope this helps with all the confusion going around.

I terms of non flying creatures it's a free fall there speed depends on hight. birds keep full control of dive they can cancel it also but we can't in mid air.

They went from a cheetah, to a goose, to the golden eagle? And btw, lions running at 50 mph is a myth and a misconception, 40 max is what I’ll give them.
