Shout out for Hector Elizondo - the actor who played the Head Concierge at the hotel where a lot of the movie scenes took place. There was something very wholesome in that character - and in Elizondo's portrayal of the character, that not only added a dose of reality to the storyline, but gave better context to Gere's character. The concierge saw long before Gere's character, that Vivien had real substance - that she had both depth and real potential. And IMO it was the interactions between Gere and Elizondo's characters, that gave the audience a clue that Gere's character had substance too, and was not just some wallet on legs. Elizondo portrayed the archetypal 'hard working man who has seen how the world really works' brilliantly. We have all known men in our lives who are of that mettle, and they are each one irreplaceable. The fact that his character got along with Gere, and had time for him as a human being, spoke volumes. Great casting throughout, IMO. Also Vivien's room-mate - she too is a fine actress.

I agree 100 percent. He became like a father figure or fairy God father to Vivien. Helping her to get that gorgeous cocktail dress and teaching her the silver ware. But the best moment of his is when he sees her in the red dress. He looks like a father looking at his daughter. Kit was also so super. Her comments were so perfect. She really did a great job.

Grace C: I agree with you about Hector except he was the hotel manager. Hector’s character was so endearing and Hector played him so well! His kindness towards his employees and guests was heartwarming. He treated everyone with respect and brought out the best in them. I fell in love with Hector Elizondo in this movie! His character was similar to Mr. Andrews the ship builder of the Titanic (Victor Garber) who was so kind and protective of Rose. Both were fatherly mentors.

While Molly Ringwald says it's one of her biggest mistakes, it was no mistake. Let's be honest. Julia Roberts is the reason why the movie was successful. As much as I love Molly in Sixteen Candles and Pretty in Pink, she would not have been able to bring what Julia brought for the character of Vivian. Julia exuded the perfect "street toughness", mixed with the "naive silliness" and the 'broken sadness" of the character in perfect balance. Honestly, IMO, she deserved an Oscar for this portrayal, but it isn't the typical type of role that would win the major awards.

It's a little inaccurate to say Roberts was an unknown in Hollywood when "Pretty Woman" was made. Most people definitely knew her name at least.

I agree. After Steel Magnolias she was a star. She did the talk show circuit and people were dying to know what her next movie was going to be. @@debra2700 In the past (and even still today to a lesser degree) when an actor/actress was nominated for an Oscar they were suddenly a big deal...especially if it was a newcomer who was nominated. I think just about everyone knew there was something quite unique and special about Julia Roberts when they saw her in "Steel Magnolias". There's good reason she was the only one from the whole cast that received an Oscar nomination. That's a huge achievement when you are the newcomer in the group among the likes of seasoned pros like Sally Field, Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah, Olympia Dukakis, and Dolly Parton! To be chosen as the best from a team of people like that must be pretty flattering! Prior to "Pretty Woman" Roberts also had WON the Golden Globe for "Steel Magnolias" (an award which was much more relevant than it is today, 2nd only to the Oscars).

Richard Gere is also a guitarist and has a large guitar collection. and Julia Roberts also has a brother who is also an actor. Eric Roberts. but the two of them are sort of a stranged and don't communicate with each other very much. and Lotus had to send a person along with the car to give Richard Gere tips on how to drive the car. because like most exotic cars they are not particularly easy to drive. for someone who hasn't driven them before. and Roy Orbison records for the song "Pretty Woman". received a boost in royalties from the movie. even though it was already a very huge hit, with record sales in the millions.

Most of the more severe illnesses happen to people by an upsetting event happening in their lives that takes them by surprise, unexpectedly, impacting first in the brain, then in the corresponding organ which that part of the brain controls. The end of WWI had absolutely everything to do with the Flu and lung TB outbreak that occurred killing millions. In nature, the biological conflict linked with a territorial fear (just what it means-a fear in your territory, your home, your community, etc.) is a widening of the bronchia (tissue loss). Your body attempts to widen your bronchia in order to allow more air into your lungs to give you more strength and energy to fight to keep your territory safe. Stay with me.......The biological conflict linked with a death fright impacts the lungs. The lungs attempt to grow larger in order to allow more air in because breath equals life, as we all know. No breath equals death. Why are so many people across the world suddenly having their appendix removed? The appendix is associated with “being in fear for one’s life”. The HEALING phase is the rupture/inflammation. While you are in the fear or death fright conflict, you notice no symptoms of “disease”, except you have cold hands, cold feet, you can’t sleep, you awaken at 3 AM every night, you have little appetite. During the war, millions of people were in fear of the bombing of their homes and cities where the war was most active. Fearing for their lives, their loved ones in the war, their ability to survive. The food in the stores was sparse due to shortages. This lasted for 4 long years! The longer the conflict, the worse the healing phase. Within 2 weeks of the German Chancellor announcing the end of WWI, these millions of people ALL went into the healing phase all at the same time. It is during the healing phase that you experience symptoms of illness! What is the healing phase of the bronchia widening? Severe bronchitis, pneumonia. The body attempts to refill this lost tissue and you experience inflammation, fever, coughing, body aches, fatigue, etc. What is the healing phase of the extra lung tissue that grew? Decomposing of the tissue by TB bacteria and fungi. The symptoms of this healing phase are: severe coughing up of blood and tissue, fever, inflammation, severe mucous, body aches, fatigue. During this decomposing of the extra tissue (tumor), the body expels a lot of protein, and without replenishment, severe protein loss can result in death. Antibiotics did not exist yet. If TB bacteria does not exist in a person or they have been vaccinated against TB (big mistake), then the tumor will simply encapsulate and become dormant and not harm you. Who died during the Spanish Flu? Mainly the poor who could not afford to buy meat and proper nourishment, and the people who were directly impacted by the bombings and destruction of their homes. Millions of people suffered fear and death frights during the fighting of WWI, and millions of people all went into healing at the end of it. Not everyone was affected because not everyone suffered the same way. It’s not a “flu”, it’s not something you “catch”. It’s biological, meaningful, and unavoidable. One hundred years later, a Fear Campaign begins, using the media to spread it......

@@val13c59 no, it's called bad casting. Judy made us love Dorothy, and Julia made us love Vivienne. Shirley would have been a child, and had so much cutsey confidence from her career starting at an early age. udy being pudgy and vulnerable was what made us love her. Molly was always cold and distant, so can't see her as a femme fatale, and her career stalled. Julie has a quality that with her smile, she makes us love her, no matter what character she is playing. It isn't mind games, it's chemistry.

When you make a masterpiece, it can’t be improved on! This movie was a masterpiece! From the script, to the actors chosen for their parts, the fabulous clothes, the scene locations, the music, all were perfection! What you see as a masterpiece I view as the most vile and pornographic movie ever made. Streetwalkers are invariably abused and traumatized children. Thy are recruited by pimps and pimpettes when they are exhausted, hungry, and homeless. They are turned out to work their daily quota and are of course raped, beaten, drugged and frequently murdured. Very few meet billionaires on the “stroll” and live happily ever after in mansions. A pauper’s grave is more likely assuming their bodies are found. The cast, crew, producers and directors should live in perpetual shame for making a movie promoting prostitution as a viable lifestyle and enjoyable entertainment trope. Whatever you were paid it wasn’t worth your soul. Perhaps you would prefer to live a personal hell-on-earth. A police officer will knock at your door and drive you to a morgue where you can identify the dead child as your own before the forensic autopsy begins. Should people be offended by my comments, please feel free to argue/ debate my post. Just be aware that I spent 47 years in the Child Protection profession. Thousands of interviews with sex-trade workers and not one happy ending to report.

And here’s the irony, Richard Gerry didn’t want to do the movie and said no several times until he met Julia Roberts. Their chemistry was off the charts so much so, that I find it to be a huge coincidence that shortly after the movie was finished he met and started dating Cindy Crawford (Who looks similar to Roberts) if you look at their build, height, same hair and style, both had brown eyes and both were beautiful. I think he was smitten with Julia and knew she just looked at him as a coworker/friend, so he dates someone who reminds him of her but without the acting chops and charisma Julia had. I agree Nottighill was a great movie but by that time Julia Roberts was a diva and had to be paid a million to kiss Hugh Grant

No truer words can be said about Notting Hill. It is very much a fairy tale because no woman would be interested in an effeminate cuck like Hugh Grant's character in that movie, especially a high value female celebrity.

Just an FYI in case no one else has mentioned it… The actors name was not Philip Stuckey, the characters name was Philip Stuckey, and he was played by Jason Alexander 👍

Pretty Woman. It is a modern-day fairy tale. It is a Disney princess movie. It is very, very sweet.

although Pretty Woman is a great 'feel good' movie, Notting Hill is a true modern-day fairy tale. From meeting and falling in love with a Hollywood movie star, to telling them, " as fantastic as this looks, I fear that my heart (and soul) would be devastated if you left me again.. " has to be one of the most genuine lines that everyone can relate to..

Richard Gere was phoning it in. He didn’t respect Roberts’s acting talent. Later, in that Peter Pan film with Robin Williams, Julia Roberts was phoning it in.

Interesting stuff. Thanks for posting. Thank God Molly Ringwald turned down the role! And Disney almost screwed it entirely up, by wanting to get rid of Julia.
