This is a full trip report and review showing Virgin Atlantic's Premium Economy Cabin from Los Angeles to London.
Virgin Atlantic Premium Economy is the level just below Virgin Upper Class but above Virgin Atlantic Economy. I found Virgin Atlantic to have a better premium economy product than British Airways
The seats on the 787 are in a 2 - 3 - 2 configuration and the cabin is much smaller and gives you a nice space to relax in with Dinner served on proper dishes compared to plastic economy boxes.

I've flown Premium Economy a couple times, most recently in April 19. I like the footrest for when you're flying back from London (to LA) and are basically up and watching movies all day. It's quite a comfortable way to perch. Great experience overall.

Just booked our flights through Delta an hour ago. We're going April of 2020, 17 days. ATL to Heathrow will be Delta and I'm looking forward to their version of the footrest a little more than Virgins. We will fly Virgin from Heathrow to Boston. I typically fly business when going to Asia for the lie-flat seat, but there's a big difference between 12 hours of travel and 31 so I couldn't justify the price increase ($4k more? Bananas).

Thanks for this review of premium economy with Virgin Atlantic LA to London. I like airline reviews & yours was good with plenty of detail. I've never flown anything other than economy but I think from what I've heard the cost of premium economy can be very high for what you get. Personally I don't place much importance on things like priority boarding, real cutlery & plates etc. I think the seat & space matter most. My sister has done many trips on premium economy & says that Air New Zealand are very good

Flyleaf Plot I’ve tried both and was blown away with the premium economy service and the sky couch was awesome since it still allowed for one to stretch out. The only problem I see for the sky couch is height and weight being an issue as I saw some struggling to fit in without having their feet out in the aisle.

I’ve flown Premium and occasionally First (using points) on VA for the past twenty years between Miami (home) and LHR (old home). I generally pick the last row for the same reason you did. The crew have always been very good. I highly recommend Premium if you can splurge just for the extra legroom.

Thanks for the review... I've flown Premium Economy on Delta and Qantas, The way I think of it is, International Premium Economy is about on par with domestic First Class. It's not nearly as good as international Business class (but it's also a fraction of the cost). For me, it was "good enough". The seats are much better than regular economy, and the food/service was a bit better. Hopefully VA will be as good as Delta and Qantas are (from the reviews, it seems like it will be).

Even though we didn't fly premium economy back from Orlando in 2012, I can agree that they need to redesign the breakfast menu. We just got offered a bacon and egg bagel.

Only flown Virgin Premium Economy once and that was back in 2009. We flew out of LGW on 3rd December to Grantley Adams in Barbados and were the first (and possibly only) flight to leave Gatwick that day due to snow. There was no menu (essentially the old chicken or beef options) and no crockery. This could have been because of only half the flight crew due to the rest not being able to get to the airport). The return flight was much the same, but at least we got an extra 8 hours at the hotel drinking cocktails due to the delay from the incoming LGW flight! The amenity kit was a transparent "beach bag", socks, ear plugs, toothpaste and brush, comb and pen.

Totally agree about the meal have you had a look at what others give you we went AC in premium and for our breakfast we was served a piece of Banana Bread and a hot drink in Premium.

I like your comment about the best tip for which rows. I'm someone who values my space more than my recline, so if I could, I'd choose the front so no one reclines into you, but that's why you often pay extra for those seats! 😃 Thanks for another great review... the food looked good, until the underwhelming breakfast...

Nice review. I don't think I would pay the additional amount for PE on Virgin. Maybe using miles would entice me but the meal service was nothing to write home about nor was the seat. There must be better PE service on other airlines on this route. As always, take care and Happy Travels!

I’ve just booked flights from London to Portland and back from Vancouver via Seattle, with the last leg from SEA in the very seat you had (25A and C) by chance. Great video and looking forward to my dream trip next year even more now. It was only £270 more to fly out in Comfort+ on Delta and back in Premium on Virgin than main cabin both ways so I really feel we got a good deal after watching this :)

A decent PE product, but agree with you in that the breakfast offering for a 10-hour flight is inadequate. Switching to a light pre-arrival meal seems to be a trend in a number of airlines in an attempt to cut costs even in premium cabins.

Yep it needs to be a bit more after a 10 hour flight. As a few people have mentioned they flew LHR-HKG which is the same flight time almost and they got a hot breakfast on arrival. It should match on this premium route.

@@Whenitraveltheworld Yeah, the last time I flew LHR-HKG which was with BA Club World I was served a full breakfast prior to arrival. That sector is less than two hours longer than LAX-LHR. I`ve not done a trans-Atlantic for a while, but on the last occasion from the west coast with BA on the SFO-LHR route there was still a full breakfast offering then. Given that LAX-LHR is such a competitive route you would think that carriers such as VS would do better.

Flew in premium to Johannesburg with Virgin in April and then economy back to London and totally agree that the morning meal is not good enough after a long overnight flight. Overall a good product with the seat and leg rooms etc but the food really disappointed and I'd go as far too say the economy meals were nicer despite the plastic trays! Not sure it's worth the extra amount again

Yeah the seat and legroom is pretty good. Yeah the food used to be amazing with them in PE, seems they have started to slip or cost cut, it will effect them in the long run, hopefully they bring it back up to be world leading.

I recently travelled Virgin economy from Hong Kong to London and found the flight and service to be very good however even though we had the full English breakfast I did feel a bit hungry by the end of the flight.

Thank you for this great review. We have booked this economy premium seating on a future flight to London from Newark NJ. My husband is 6 ft 4 inches. We have pre-selected row 25 so as not to recline in someone else’s space. Do you believe my husband will have enough legroom on a full recline since this is the last row? Or perhaps we should try to get row 21? He stiffens up quite a bit on long flights, as many people do. We will likely not sleep very much but will watch movies so we are not looking for a bed-like experience. Thank you any attention you give to my inquiry. Safe travels!

Good review ! I ve flown out of lax a few times on virgin terminal 2 is ok once you get air side very poor prior to that , not sure I’d pay the extra for the upgrade I was not that impressed to be honest .

2 by 2 PE upstairs in the 747's was great. Very roomy seats and nice and quiet. Then they added economy up there too which meant it wasn't as quiet any more. On this flight, I don't like the 2-3-2. Sux balls if you get the middle seat. I hear the new seats are going to be more narrow. Little by little they cut and cut and cut until it's just not worth the extra money. That abysmal breakfast is an example of a cut too far imo.

Yeah I flew the 747 in that economy section once, and I thought it was so strange that premium was in front. We had to use the same bathroom, so that really killed the mood for the PE passengers. Yeah the 2-3-2 is not great but BA is 2- 4- 2 so even worse. But the breakfast needed to be more on this route.

Economy is ok across the Atlantic from New York to London or Miami to Lisbon as those flights are all about 8 hours which is doable in economy. Anything longer than 8 hours and you are running into DVT (deep vein thrombosis) territory in cramped economy. Definitely Premium Economy or even getting a good deal on Business Class is the way to go over 8 hours in the air to protect your health and sanity.

Totally agree with you re breakfast. I had a running battle with BA - whose breakfasts reach new levels of depressing - and even complained to then CEO Cruz who informed me by letter 'this is what our passengers want'. Absolute rubbish. Now I get some people hate breakfast and either do not have it or eat very little; fine, but why punish all passengers? Some of us want a classic hot breakfast and I really can't see the difficulty. Personally I think this is airlines simply cutting costs. Come on if someone is paying hundreds of pounds extra, how on Earth can they be presented with that embarrasment, especially as you say after a 10 flight? I had to fly Upper class to get a hot breakfast. I would have thought Premium passengers should at least be offered an option from the Upper Class menu. If airlines are too tight to offer a hot breakfast isn't the simple solution to allow customers to pre-order it just like special diets? A real shame as apart from that I think VA's Premium Economy is a really good product and totally knocks BA - and many others - out of the park.

You did not mention that if the peple in front of you recline their seat you have to be a contortionist to get out of your seat to go to the yoilet for example (especially a window seat or the middle seat in the centre). The seats recline so far back that there is only a very small gap between their seat and the arm rests containing the meal tray, approx 6" which is hardly enough room to get your legs through.

I flew with virgin atlantic in peemium econ and econ before from hong kong to london (11h30min -13h). Both of them offer full english/omelette/congee. Maybe ur flight is shorter?

I'm not everybody. But most days, I don't eat a breakfast of any type. So it does not matter to me that premium economy gets fruit and yogurt. Some days it's just cereal or fruit or granola bar or nothing. The times I crossed over the Atlantic at night in basic economy, I did not worry about a meal of any type within the hour before landing.

Yeah the footrest is not much use if you have long legs, but great for short legs.

Agree that the footrest is great for short legs. I can't reach the ground so I'm quite uncomfortable on normal flights. The footrest allows me to actually have some support and makes a big difference. Better than crushing everything in my bag.

I flew premium LAS LGW Nov. 2018 on 747. Disappointed to see the same menu with sad breakfast (the pastry was very good as I recall, however.) I'll be taking this flight again on premium this Nov. on 787 LAS LHR. The Virgin cabin crews are fantastic and the premium seats are (were 747) extra comfortable. Cheers!

Hi James. I could not agree more with you regarding Virgin really needs to improve it's breakfast prior to landing. Do you think they are trying to copy BA with that serving? I have only flown once with Virgin in Upper Class from HKG to LHR. It was okay but my only issue was your sleeping at an angle away from the window. Very strange and no privacy. Personally, I would give Virgin a miss in Premium anyway.

Thank Michael, glad you agree that the breakfast needed to be a bit more. They might just be cutting cost like BA to save money. Virgin struggle to make money unlike BA who make loads.

I have to say because I use public transport all the time it is grt8 to move away from Economu when flying. Economy on Virgin is so cramped. They are trying to put so many products in one space and charge more for it. I would like to try their new business class when they finally change the seats. The current business class seats does not give one any primacy and compared to what is out there is not value for money in my opinion. I was upgrade once to business and I must say the service was great.

Narrower and with a foot pedal thing instead of foot rest. Narrower shared arm rest too. And crowded cabin of 56. Feels much more like economy.

@@Whenitraveltheworld We traveled CHS/IAH/AKL AKL/ZQN CHC/SYD SYD/AKL/IAH/CHS on one reservation for $3,000. Would have been $2,000 basic economy. I thought it was well worth it but years ago might have wanted to save a few bucks and I suspect the back of the plane really wasn't too bad!

is better than economy plus didn’t you know premium economy is technically economy plus and virgins premium class is better than economy plus but not as good as business class also did you know that their premium class nearly passed as a business class
