Thanks for finding my video and pressing play!
Virgin Trains East Coast are back in the news...very topical, as Virgin (well, Stagecoach, who actually own 90% of the operation) have decided to hand back this franchise on the East Coast early. This news broke after this video was filmed. It’s not clear what the next steps; this news article summarises things quite well: www.google.co....
Anyway, join me on this trip and experience the civilised enjoyment of travelling First Class on Virgin Trains East Coast. A cooked breakfast is complimentary at this time of day, and definitely more than welcome after yet another early start. For the first time in a while, I was blessed with some sunshine while travelling!
Some say the East Coast Main Line is the jewel in the crown of all Britain’s intercity routes. I think that’s only partly true. For scenery, the West Coast definitely has it beat. However the East Coast was the stomping ground of the Flying Scotsman, as well as the Mallard (the world’s fastest steam locomotive, at 126mph).
Travelling First Class can be affordable if you book in advance. Virgin East Coast allow bookings on most direct routes up to six months in advance. In my case, I only booked a couple of weeks out, yet I still managed to secure a ticket for reasonable value.
I have lots of plans to take trains in Europe this year, as well as testing out Amtrak’s Acela Express down the American East Coast. I’ll also be travelling on Eurostar to Amsterdam on the first weekend it operates, and showcasing the new luxury Caledonian Sleeper carriages and berths. You’ll definitely want to subscribe, so you don’t miss out!
Make sure you have your notifications set! 🛎
Enjoy the report.

I just watched both of your KC to Newcastle vids and I must say the second one was better just because it was filmed during the day and you could show more of the sights along the way. As I will probably never get to visit England or GB this is the only chance I'll get to see these things. Thank You Paul for the great videos.

I agree on King's Cross. Loved that station. I took the train down from Huntingdon pretty much every other weekend. Former Airman stationed at Molesworth, so travel was something I had to do. I caught the whole restoration as it happened! Went from eating a cheese sandwich from Huntingdon station to catching a burrito at the Mexican place in the refurbished one. My only regret is not finding the time to take the train from St. Pancras to Paris.

The addition of the external shots was great, and the references to local lore a great addition. Now I know who Terry Butcher was, and "The greatest goal in FIFA history.". I knew of neither of those. The variety of shots really brings out one of your Q and A videos where you state that you're not fun to travel with. You're too busy working. You mean GNER (Great North Eastern Railway) 😀 Great Northern operates local stopping services from King's Cross and the furthest north they reach is Peterborough. The trains are still the same as they were then, but as you can see they've been refurbished. Many of us miss the GNER days as they were unique in that they were the only rail operator that increased the number of on-board restaurants over what British Rail offered (others cut back on restaurants and now there's only a few remaining on GWR), a stylish livery, great catering and an attention to detail such as having the GNER crest on all glassware.

Another great review! Thank you Paul. There’s some good railway architecture up that line. The food looked good and I was impressed with the lounge - are these becoming more common? The external footage was a great idea and thanks to those who filmed it! Oh, and #teambrownsauce all the way!
@Paul_Lucas
@Paul_Lucas 6 жыл бұрын
First Class lounges are present at some major intercity stations. Virgin East Coast and Virgin West Coast operate them. GWR have one, East Midlands have a few. Plus there are a few other random ones around. I think the scope for them is quite limited - the frequency on British trains on intercity routes is actually very good, something we forget often. For example, London to Manchester every 20 minutes, London to Bristol every 30, London to Birmingham every 20, London to Newcastle every 30, and so on. You’re not in the station for too long, even when connecting.
@SaveEastCoastRewards
@SaveEastCoastRewards 6 жыл бұрын
GWR actually have two, the main one is in Paddington and it is my favourite of the UK railway lounges (it might look nothing special at first glance but it has both a modern and a traditional section, the traditional section used to be Queen Victoria's waiting room), the other GWR lounge is in Cardiff. Other lounges I know of, Greater Anglia has quite a basic first class lounge in Liverpool Street, Grand Central has one in Wakefield Kirkgate and ScotRail has one in Aberdeen (not open to VTEC passengers)

The cripple sidings at Northallerton used to be a coal depot as well as platforms for livestock trains going to the old auction mart which was right next to the station. Now the auction mart has moved and the sidings are mostly used to stable track maintenance trains.

I love the idea of Virgin Trains they are so much better than anything we have got in the South East of Australia. We do have the XPT (which is based upon the HST but rubbish because Conditions of track and temperature are completely different to that of Brittan) but they are only twice a day and they are expensive and really in need of a facelift. V/Line is good but has the issue of being mainly standard class commuter trains between major Victorian Cities (Melbourne, Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo). It is really good that you have now gained some confidence to speak in your videos there is not really much to fear about it anyway. I might give doing a trip review a go possibly to Geelong or Gipsland. Cheers Jezz

I remember taking that route (as far as York) around 2000. What impressed me was the number of tunnels: every time the train entered a tunnel at high speed, my ears would "pop" from the pressure. It certainly was fast and comfortable (compared to our USA trains).

An excellent English breakfast, so that the three hours of the trip are more bearable. I've been to NCL many times, probably more than thirty, but only at the airport. What a beautifully shot and enjoyable video! Paul, with each set of trip report vids I watch, I become increasingly inspired to board a plane again. I equally love your rail vids, as I'm a longtime rail-lover. Before enjoying this travel on Virgin to Newcastle, I viewed your EuroStar train journey. I'm ready to fly again, and first I'll be heading to England to tour London and hopefully two or three cities. If I can, I'd love to reach the Cotswolds. Perhaps I'm dreaming too big. From London's St. Pancras Station: to Paris via the EuroStar and then the TGV to either Normandy or to Lyon. I'm still in the planning stages on that first air+rail trip. After that, meaning, within two years of the above trip, I'd like to visit Ireland, including Dublin, Belfast and Dingle. I just hope that I don't go bankrupt riding first class on the EuroStar! I don't think that'll happen. I really wrote in tonight (it's only 8:44 p.m. here on the U.S. Eastern seaboard) just to say thank you, thank you, for just enjoyable videos and info-rich (and visual-rich) trip reports. I love your calming voice, the wonderful music selections and all the sights and sounds of the trains -- interiors and exteriors -- and the airplanes. Wow! 🌝 Cheers, Gabriela

If you're curious as to what's on the menus here's the current options www.virgintrainseastcoast.com/the-east-coast-experience/first-class/menu/ I've got a selection of menus over the years. Some original GNER restaurant menus, the last ever East Coast restaurant menu, the trial menu when East Coast were experimenting with the complimentary service before it was rolled out to all trains and a rather nice VTEC menu when they first introduced their Hop on Board ale - I need to dig them out of storage some time :)

Good to see proper catering on VTEC. I regularly travel early morning to both Euston and Scotland on VTWC 1st class and the catering is excellent. In contrast I travelled last week on a peak morning Transpennine Express service from Liverpool to Newcastle and all on offer was a biscuit and a couple of cups of tea/coffee for the whole 3 hour journey, all begrudgingly served. Booked in advance, my next early morning service to Euston from Lime Street on VTWC costs £4 more than the advance TPE fare I’ve just travelled on AND includes my local Merseyrail travel that TPE don’t include in their advance fare.

A trip to which I can truly relate. I am originally from Morpeth (another 14 miles further North!) I have to say I would love to join you on a trip one day, as I have loved train travel since I was knee-high to a grasshopper

Paul, I think that what I like best about your trip reports, besides their quality, is that you let your subtitles do the talking, rather than chattering all the through as some do. :-)

Thanks for the great video. I doubt I'll get back across the pond to experience it myself. I've ridden trains in Germany and Italy, but they were back in the '70s.

Thank you , my memories of living in England for a couple of years in the late 60's are enhanced by your vlog ... well done .." @@theaccountant1295 well since favourites are subjective it is irrelevant. Marylebone is my favourite. St Pancras and Paddington are far too pompous for my liking.

I just subscribed to your interesting channel earlier today and have watched a few of your other videos before this one. This is the first domestic train trip I have watched. Your "production values" seem quite high - congratulations! :) A minor detail that intrigued me though - at one point you showed a close-up of what was I assume your own ticket and it showed it to be a "disabled person railcard" ticket, whatever your disability I am glad it does not seem to hinder your travel unduly. As for me, I use a "senior person railcard" and tend to use the 1st class option whenever possible to give a little more space and comfort, although I travel by train (& in general) much less frequently than you seem to. Another enjoyable video.

Another great start to a cold and frosty Sunday here in the North East of England. Great trip though I usually get off at Darlington. Pity you missed the white horse on the hills between York and Northallerton stations, it was on "your side" of the train too. I still miss the chance of buying a cooked breakfast going south in the restaurant cars of old, irrespective of the ticket purchased. Pity that all the work done establishing the Virgin/Stagecoach service & brand will be lost when they give up the franchise. #teambrownsauce

Great to see complimentary breakfast in first class on the train. Major grumble toc’s charge so much for first class then charge even more to eat on top

Amongst all the web trip reports Paul's are amongst the very best- sadly, in many of them he doesn't give a running commentary on the trip- the best ones are when we hear his analysis of the service received...maybe this is what he's working up to- music is often tasteful and Paul is watchable, and clearly understands video editing- unlike 99% of the others out there- he has decent diction and, if he's ad-libbing, it's very very good. He also has clear world experience, so he is authoritative to a degree.
