History, Tourist Traps, Suicide Tables, Mining, Haunts!! All of it right here in Virginia City, Nevada. As a huge fan of Mark Twain and his book 'Roughing it' I've known a lot about Virginia City and the Comstock years, and always wanted to see the town for myself.
This was the place Samuel Clemens first worked as a professional writer under the name "Mark Twain" - and it was also the place where one of the richest mining booms in old west history took place. The comstock is legendary, and it left plenty of legendary attractions above it straddling the side of Mt Davidson in Virginia!
This video is the result of our first visit here together, but there should be many more, hopefully when I'm not completely sick! Thanks for watching!

I really do recommend staying at the silver queen hotel - it's not 5 star luxury, but it;s definitely interesting! Please tell them we sent you. Not that they hooked us up or anything, just that it was a pretty wacky experience. Xoxo - Justin

I was there and I just LOVE this town. Nothing I've seen so really close to old West! Will go back there soon for more fun :) I don't know but I feel so much better when I visit something rare and one of a kind, rather than popular tourist destinations where everything is just about spending money and that's it.

Did you ride the Virginia and Truckee Railroad? The 35-minute short ride provides alot of insight on the Comstock Lode. The V&T itself, back in the day, was the lynchpin of the mines. The railroad was opened in 1869 between Carson City and Gold Hill, with the extension to Virginia City opening a year later. Two years later, in 1872, the line was extended north from Carson City to Reno, connecting the V&T to the First Transcontinental Railroad. A branchline to Minden was opened in 1905 to tap into the agricultural traffic. By the 1920s, the railroad's fortunes declined, as the mines were depleted and all other traffic was starting to shift to automobiles and trucks. The line between Virginia City and Carson City was demoted to branchline status in 1932, shut down in 1938, and torn up in 1941. The line from Minden to Reno remained in service until 1950, when the entire line was shutdown. Robert C. Gray, one of the passengers on the final train to Virginia City in 1938, set out in 1972 to reconstruct the railroad, as the TV series Bonanza had brought a tourism boom. The line was opened between Virginia City and the eastern portal of Tunnel #4 (a little over a mile) in 1976, with an extension to Gold Hill in 1991 (they had to build a shoehorn around Tunnel #3 when it caved in during reconstruction efforts), and, with the help of the state, to Mound House in 2009. The railroad currently owns three steam locomotives (two operational), three diesels (two operational), a motorcar, an open car, two cabooses, a tunnel car converted from a boxcar, seven passenger cars (three in service, one used as a work coach, the rest in operable condition, but not in service at the moment), and several freight cars.

I remember I used to live near Hannibal, Missouri (Mark Twain's hometown) and they were nuts about him there. Hannibal isn't as much of a town, now it's more of a Huge Mark Twain museum where people happen to live. They've got his childhood home, Huck Finn's home, Becky Thatcher's home, Mark Twain Cave, Mark Twain Live Show, Mark Twain water park, etc... Plus, it has some Disney history, Cliff Edwards (voice of Jiminy Cricket) was born here, as well as the Unsinkable Molly Brown. I recommend going, it's very cool and very historic.

The Clemens brothers didn't just live in Nevada, Orion was more or less our first governor. James Nye (the first and only governor of the Nevada Territory) was usually off rubbing elbows with important people, leaving Secretary Orion Clemens to do all of the real work out of a drafty shack in Virginia City.

Dude... I lived in Reno and worked at then, Reno Harley Davidson, Buell. I'm a retired Harley Davidson tech, and I spent almost every weekend up at Virginia City for 4 years. I did not know a lot of what you relayed in this video. Great info... you did well, but do you really have to act so... nutty? Don't mean to rag on ya, man, I liked the video, seriously, it was just a little... over done with the acting. I bet if you just acted more like yourself, or... just natural, it would be better. In any case, keep it up, good job. OH, and FYI, you could mentioned the prostitute that committed suicide in room 111 in the Silver Queen, and yes it is haunted. I have a video of a ball of light crossing the hall upstairs there, right above her room. I have similar video from the Washoe Club, which they did not allow anyone to go upstairs before I left in 2008. Actually, I'm going to try and upload those vids... How could you do all that and miss "David John and the Comstock Cowboys" at the "Bucket of Blood Saloon?" They are Virginia City legends.
