Aww, poor little sleepyheads, Till is out to scare you! Actually, I’d call this a “grown-ups version” of the classic Sandman… rather dark for little tots, but intensely colorful and complex for “grown-ups”!
Here’s the link to the original song:

I think important to point out that Rammstein didn't just take the children's character of the Sandmann and turned him evil, there's a 19th century horror short story by E.T.A. Hoffmann who already portrayed the Sandmann as a monster who steals children's eyes in their sleep. It's more likely actually based on that.

Oh Amy, what a beautiful surprise this was! 🖤 I didn't expect to see Rammstein on the channel in any near future, but I am so happy to see it! So, thank you! You made my day! 🥰 I am really glad that you listened to both versions. They are very different but both very worth of paying attention to, in my opinion. And also, as you've said, they show the variety and the huge immagination of the band, which is definitely one of the signatures of Rammstein. That immagination of theirs has taken me to so many different places and moods. And they are simply all that I musically need in my life. They feed all my senses and fullfill every my musical desire. I love both versions of this song but if I have to choose the one that I prefer it would be the original/album version. Unless I'm forgetting another metal band, I think Rammstein has probably been the metal band you have appreciated the most. I think it is legit to call the piano version a cover. They perfectly nail the feeling of angst to fall asleep in fear of, what will happen in the dreams. The first version is in that moment, the piano version is remembering in an age being over that fear. I guess it's around five years of age... that's 57 years ago for me, and I don't remember the dreams; but the feeling I can recall hearing that song. Mein herzlicher Dank. Even though I like how they handled the string parts in the original, short stabs of strings (think Kashmir), which work well with rock music, I prefer the piano version, the contrast is starker for me, the lullaby-like quality of the piano versus Till's voice. I also thought your harp fit really well with the song too, I look forward to hearing a version on the harp. Virgin Rock does a great job. But when she said Rammstein is dark, I had to laugh. That's really not big news. 🙂 By the way "My Heart Burns" is one of Rammstein's friendlier songs. The song's lyrics involve a narrator describing the terrors of nightmares. The opening line of the song's intro and chorus ("Now, dear children, pay attention. I have brought something for you") is taken from the German children's TV Show "Mr Sandman", which provided children with a "nice" bedtime story. The song's narrator appears as a much more darker version of this character. In this video, the character of the Sandman is played by Melanie Gaydos a famous model. Melanie Gaydos has suffered from a rare genetic defect since she was born: Her head is bald, her teeth and nails are malformed. She first appears to a sleeping Richard Kruspe, triggering nightmares and sending him into a state of agony. Meanwhile, Till terrorizes the complex of Beelitz-Heilstätten (military hospital of the Imperial German Army and Adolf Hitler recuperated there after being wounded in the first world war), which acts as an orphanage. He kidnaps the orphans and places them in a cage located in the main bathroom. A female warden attempts to defend the children with a shotgun, but Till overpowers her. The warden appears in the video both young (Viktorija Bojarskaja) and old (Anna von Rüden), while Till remains the same age, indicating immortality and paranormal abilities. While guarding the orphans, Till takes a grotesque, insect-like form with an elongated head and fingers. The children are then used in various examinations and surgeries with the rest of the band playing the doctors. The female warden is also seen assisting them in her younger form. One of the surgeries sees a child's tears extracted through a syringe, which is then vaginally injected by the Sandman. The Sandman is also subject to examinations by the doctors, as Paul H. Landers is seen giving her a gynecological examination. She later walks in a dress shielding two small children, possibly indicating that the tears are involved in a form of In vitro fertilisation. While Till is away from the main bathroom, the children (portrayed by the rest of the band as disheveled adults) escape from their cage and the orphanage. This causes Till to tear out and consume his own heart while the Heilstätten is engulfed in an inferno. The video ends with the liberated walking away from the building, while the chorus of the piano version plays in the background, signalling the video of the piano version as an afterword. (Wikipedia) The song "my heart burns" is the film score for "Lilja 4-ever". A film about child prostitution. That's why you could interpret the text based on this film. In the film, girls from Russia lured to Sweden in the hope of a better life, in which a young and attractive man promises her heaven there: "Dear children, take care, I am the voice from the pillow" Then the sentence "Tore it out of my chest, I can imagine that she died inside every time she was raped. Since the rapes happen under cover of the night, this motif comes up frequently in the song. They steal your hot little tears, The film is a nightmare and it leaves a feeling of emptiness and powerlessness ...

Nice analysis! I also really like the harp playalong! I would reccomend though that you listen to original versions rather than to video versions if you are not watching the video anyways. Video versions often contain sound effects and I think they usually have the less pleasant listening experience. This video version for example misses a very nice guitar solo near the end! If you want to listen to more Rammstein, I would recommend Frühling in Paris because I think you like to listen to pieces from a band that differ a lot from another to experience the variety of music that a band has to offer and Frühling in Paris shows a happy side of Rammstein that wasn't there in the three pieces you have listened to. I would also recommend the song Mutter because it has an interesting and for a modern piece rather complex chord progression (although I'm not sure if that convinces you because you didn't like the harmonies of Total Eclipse of the Heart which I think is also relatively complex for modern music). Anyways, it's a very nice ballad.

What a good idea to compare these two versions directly. For me as a musically untrained person it was really interesting to get explained what you could hear. I am a visual person and of course I love the two music video they created to both versions. I would describe the first one to a horror that comes from outside and the second to a horror that comes from inside fears or: from your own pillow. If you think in the second version his voice is like overpowered by the piano, you are right, but perhaps you could watch what kind of power the video adds to it. What you are able to hear without watching the music video is stunning for me. Your ears seems to have eyes, too.

"...this is going to go in my list of covers to create...." I would really enjoy hearing your interpretations of rock songs that interest you. Which reminds me: there s a harpist on YT who has videos of her experimenting with various guitar pedals. You might find it interesting. I don't remember the channel's name, but I expect that it would not be difficult to find.

You need to listen to the album version, it has a great guitar solo

Yeah it's a shame that the official video drops the solo just to repeat the opening in its place

Yes, that's my favourite version of the song mainly because of that guitar. Very simple but very effective in my opinion.

I agree this is dark. Listening to the second version with you, without any video is interesting and I can understand what you are thinking. But when you say it is not as scary as the first version, then you should now watch the Piano version with the accompanying video showing Till in character. I think you may change your mind about how scary it is

Yes, he is not a professional opera singer. But it’s still impressive for the normal person. :) I would love to revisit some of their songs, especially their songs who were covered by the godmother of punk, Nina Hagen. SHE had a professional education in classical music. Angela Merkel said that one of her punk peaces should be her goodbye songs. Nevertheless: if you want to react to her 1) naturträne : kzbin.info/www/bejne/b6nMZYJqh9ufpLMsi=DRWIF-oS-eUrmsaA 2. Rammstein-Cover: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rF68q5esoqlll7Msi=gmDJVhgVHMCkJJr8 3. Fantastic analysis. Your disection of this song has enriched my listening experience. Rammstein challenge the German orthodoxy and go places with these masterpieces that other bands can't or won't do. They are now a Mega band. Thank you.

Glad I got to see your reaction video before their label inevitably flags it and takes it down. They have a tendency to block videos that include their original music. For your sake, I hope it stays up!

The video has a more dramatic history. They made a first verison with a spanish director with very disturbing visuals. But in the end they did not really like it and did not publish it. Years later they filmed some more parts and this is the version we have now. The film was shot at an old east german abandoned hospital which looks really creepy.

There is a German term that describes Rammstein: „Gesamtkunstwerk“. A piece of art that only in its completeness shines to its absolute glory. While one can analyze each aspect of Rammstein separately - the music, the lyrics, the theatrics and their videos - and finding positives and negatives in each, only by putting all these aspects together really creates the whole „Rammstein experience“ and their immense uniqueness. While I am always happy to see Rammstein reviews on this channel, I can’t help that something is missing without either a live performance or a video clip streaming along. Compared to other artists - every single segment somewhat falls short in comparison (maybe not their lyrics and video productions - but you will find more virtuos instrumentals and, despite uniqueness of Till‘s voice, there are more versatile and wide ranged singers - the point is all these, maybe minor but existing, short comings are working perfectly in the Rammstein narrative and one would never want to change a thing).

" . . . organ with all the stops pulled out kind of sound," An organ with *all* the stops pulled out would be quieter than an organ running purely on its loudest stops. The reason for this is that the quieter stops don't add much volume to the sound, but they do deprive the louder stops of air. Thus, the loudest pipes would not be sounding at their full volume because they're not getting the amount of airflow they were designed to use.

You're right, more mystery than terror in this song. The demons et al. press the child's hot tears into Sandman's cold veins (I guess cellar beings are cold) and they reach his heart and make it burn. It's not even that he's upset about it... just letting the children know what bizarro world nighttime is. lol

I am following your journey through the world of rock music with great interest. The series about Pink Floyd was exquisite. I would be interested to know your reaction to a part of rock music that is largely unknown outside of Germany. the rock music from the eastern part of Germany. This is what you draw rch very lyrical lyrics with a hidden longing for freedom. The music is very diverse and most of the musicians had training in the musical field. Auch Rammstein hat seine Wurzeln in Ostdeutschland ostdeutsche

There is a third Rammstein version of this song, with piano and no voice. In fact they released a full album featuring many of their established songs as piano-only versions.
