Thank you all for watching. Sorry it took so long. :) SamIAm did some incredible work with translation efforts and being THE ultimate connection to Japan for my channel. I cannot thank him enough. This doc would not be what it is without his help. I really gave this all the energy I could put into an episode of PandaMonium. People often talk about how I'm outdoing the previous episode. In terms of sheer scope, I do not know if I will outdo this one, at least not any time soon. The length of this video is also something you won't see terribly often. Not sure if I can vamp this long about Fifa Soccer 96, for example. But I will always put as extreme of an effort as I can into the research and information gathering moving forward. As for the Virtua Cop episode, I hope you are all able to enjoy this microcosm of Saturn history. The video is not monetized. If you’re getting a million ads, it’s because of KZbin.

Just wondering, have you thought about re-doing some of the older 7-10 minute episodes with the longer/more detailed documentary format? The more iconic Saturn games mostly, like Daytona USA, Panzer Dragoon and Virtua Fighter.

This Channel moved from merely wanting to Review every US Saturn game to Documenting to the complete History of every US Saturn game and thus documenting the failure of the System outside of Japan one game at a time. And to think that it is all a passion project is absolutely mindblowing.

For those of us who gamed during this pre-internet age where everything wasn’t automatically preserved like it is today, your videos add color and substance to some exquisitely precious memories. Your vids really are a window into our glory years of gaming - days of SEGA vs. Nintendo vs. Sony, days of the Wild West of developing, days of the first polygons, and of blue, blue skies. Days that will never come again.

The message towards the end regarding how SEGA's story sadly panned out but we can still live in their brief glory moments any time we load up one of their old games, ...that gave me genuine goosebumps. Maybe it was just the way you edited it and delivered the line, but that really got me. Blue skies, forever ~ The amount of love, dedication and effort you put into these videos is insane, my man. It might start to sound like a copy/paste response but i sincerely mean this when i say it - thank you for all your hard work. I can't believe this channel exists and it's doing such an incredible job at documenting such an important console from my childhood. I appreciate your work immensely.

Regarding the long hours of work, I am a software engineer and I've been doing this for 20 years. Things are different now that I'm married with children, but I remember those early days when I was single. For those of us that love this work, you don't mind the long days and even sometimes volunteer them because this profession can feel like a hobby you get paid to do. I'm not supporting that companies should exploit their workers, but I do think there's another side to the coin. Most engineers, especially young ones, can become hyper-focused on their work because they have few, outside-work responsibilities plus they love what they are doing. The way these guys speak about this project sounds like me and some of the early work I was doing in my career, and I was doing business development and not working for a rad company like SEGA.

Dude this is incredible I’m just in awe watching the team reminisce about their dev days. It’s so fun watching their eyes light up when they remind each other about the most random moments, and how early 3d game development was just the wild west with barely any trails to follow. Thank you for this. ❤

this entire channel is like preserving and saving info that could of been easily lost to the public. All your videos together is pulling together the insane narrative and what it was like being in the time at the saturn launch. It's insane you might actually be the full preservation to one of the complex launches of any console.

This is, by far, one of the best game-related videos I've watched in a looong time, and I speak as someone with little to no relation to Sega Saturn (as I never had one). Took several evenings but I was totally absorbed. Having the developers talk about their experiences and reuniting them was super cool! I did not know about the battery thing on the controller, but checks out as a crazy sega thing. Man, what a video... Edit: Aaaahh, it even ends with with Craig Stadler singing. Perfect video, I say!

Even though the series is about reviewing Saturn games released in the U.S., you went above and beyond by covering the original arcade game and its development, then moving onto saturn port's history in detail. And you managed to interview a bunch of people of the saturn port. Massive respects, this is a feat in gaming journalism and history documentation.

Awesome work. One note on your appreciation of magazine dates. In Japan, issues are typically dated one month early for monthly magazines (two weeks early for weekly magazines). So in the case of Sega Saturn Magazine, the April 1995 issue was actually released on the first week of March 1995 (and the media contents for the magazine likely provided by Sega in Mid-February). Hence why Panzer Dragoon, released March 10, is on the cover of the "April" issue. Same for the June '95 issue released in the first week of May, etc.

Receiving Virtua Cop as 1 of 3 classic Sega titles on Saturn for Christmas was an amazing experience. This documentary drives home the time period, taking me right back to those moments of reading game magazines and going to Toys R Us. The added context and in-depth analysis of the game, development, to the people who made it possible is overwhelmingly incredible. Pacing, editing style, & the added music cast a dream like haze of nostalgia that feels soooo good. Sega Lord X said to check it out and I wasn’t disappointed. This is amazing.

This might be the greatest retro gaming video I have ever seen and I've been watching retro game videos since KZbin launched. For those of us who were there in 1995, it's hard to describe to others how incredible it was to play games like Virtua Fighter, Daytona and Virtua Cop at home. It's crazy just how much effort went into making these games, they really shot for perfection. Virtua Cop 2 is so much more impressive, but I'm guessing it was easier to make as they likely mastered the hardware by then, or better develepment tools. But I really don't know and either way I'd love a video showing it all just like this one. I watched Sega Rally video first as well and now catching up with the others. There is so much to say about how incredible this video is; but it's best I don't leave a 1000 word comment just gushing about the incredible amount of research and effort this must have taken to pull off. So I will just list my top 3 favorite things: 3. I honestly didn't know the whole story behind Playstations use of development tools. I always wondered how a newcomer in a flooded console market (3D0 etc) was able to convince so many developers to make games for it. But it just shows that if you think you are going to win, you won't act like you could lose. Sony thought they had a chance but knew they needed to show what it could do. 2: I have been watching this entire series of videos thinking "Weird he hasn't mentioned Nintendo yet." and damn; that introduction was epic. 1: Seeing the developers talk about Death Crimson was absolutely one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. I hope one day you cover that game in all its glory (?) also. GET PATREON YOU KNUCKLEHEAD.

This just drives home the absolute tragedy of the fifth generation; Sega was the undisputed trailblazer in polygon gaming in the arcade scene, yet didn't make home hardware suited to it. The polygon/textured leap in so many genres was spearheaded by Sega, but their competitors picked up that ball and took it home. Virtua Cop walked so Time Crisis could run.

@@drunkensailor112 hypothetical computing power is meaningless if practically no devs can access it. the ones in the video (sega’s own!) also say that in reality the saturn was made to be a “sprite machine” and they basically had to trick the hardware to get workable 3D results from it. as OP said, sega’s arcade heyday proved they could’ve made a proper 3D powerhouse in the console market if they had tried…but they assumed the 32-bit era was primarily going to be 2D, and it was that one misjudgment that cost them everything Q

Sorry George, but the Saturn was superior in every way. The only thing that held it back was its complicated architecture, an 8 core processor. But make no mistake, once Sega and other companies figured it out. Amazing things happened, with games like virtua cop 1 & 2. And its not just that, but games like panzer Dragoon, guardian heroes, virtual fighter would NEVER have run on PS1 hardware. And that was without the ram cart, but that didn't keep biased reviewers from tearing down the Saturn every chance they got. Or being paid off take your pick. But as a gamer, and collector since 80'', I know my stuff. Granted Sega could have handled the launch better, and marketing as well. But if you've never played one, or owned it. I highly recommend you do. You'll see exactly what I'm talking about, a lot of the games on the Saturn will never be outdone.

I know I posted about the storm and us being okay but I really wanted to talk about this episode. In a word...WOW! This was truly a masterwork you have designed my friend. I can't believe Sega said "You program for Saturn" to a guy who never worked in that capacity before. It's like hey Panda...you're the new lead engineer for NASA's next big space exploration project, chop, chop. What's even crazier is he freaking did it. He knew nothing and I guess faked it till he made it. That is truly incredible and beyond words. What's more we're not talking about working on something small but a prestige title designed to show the Saturn's 3d capabilities and it was an incredible port. I know because I picked it up the day it dropped here in the US for my Saturn. I also snagged Virtua Cop 2 when it dropped as well and wound up getting both games again after I broke my launch Saturn. Basically I bought a second Saturn when Sega was really struggling and it came with 3 games in one cardboard sleeve (both Virtua Cops were in there if I remember correctly). Just an awesome, awesome video! Well done, well done indeed.

This was beyond fantastic! I learned so much and got such a sense of nostalgia that I busted out my Sega Saturn for the first time in years and played Virtua Cop 1 & 2 for the first time in probably 15 years! Those games really were special and it's so interesting and inspiring to think what all went into overcoming the various obstacles, and the innovations of that time that helped shape the industry and even our world today. The trend I've noticed up until the mid to late 2000's was that things tended to be quite disorderly and hectic back then but they gave everyone a chance to do whatever they could to come together as a team and make it work. It certainly feels like that mindset is all but gone now and companies are generally only willing to stick with what they know is safe with highly experienced employees run in a highly organized and strict fashion. If you've seen the "Power On" Xbox documentary, you'd also know how even Microsoft was appearing to be a highly organized and professional company presenting their products when in reality the development was literally last minute and barely working, and much of the team was youngsters with little to no experience! Anyway, thanks again for this and I highly anticipate more Saturn documentaries like this! I'm hoping to see some for Dreamcast as well some day like for Sonic Adventure and Phantasy Star Online!

A lot of people can recall their first programming projects. Some say they made some version of Conway's Game of Life. I personally made a weather prediction model using text files as input. Norihiro Sekine over here started programming with Sega Saturn's Virtua Cop. That's nuts. Did he have to wing it some days and spend countless nights reading books on basics that most Sega programmers know behind their heads? Amazing stuff.

The ending almost made me shed a tear. It was like they all felt after all these years that the time they shared during the VC production was special and magic but they had all gone on their lives. When that one guy mentioned the memo he left for the others they almost became teary. That felt. 🥺

As a programmer myself these interviews are insane. These guys in the early 3d days of game development are like hero's to me. True trailblazing type stuff was happening every day. There was no way to google how to do it. You were the first one doing it for the first time and figuring it out on the fly and they manage to produce so much great stuff. Just amazing.

No Stack Overflow or 20 year experience veteran devs to get you out of a jam. You had to be creative and think of workarounds everyday. As a programmer today, I feel rather spoiled.

How cool is it that you and sam got all these guys together. i think they were grateful to you as well for reconnecting them to reminisce about such a formative moment in their careers. hearing their insights was a real gift. the chairman is surely smiling down on you for this act of keeping the sega saturn spirit alive.

Wow, I finally made it and I can honestly say I have no regrets watching the whole thing. The quality throughout the whole video is off the charts and as someone who has experience editing videos I _know_ how hard that is. Also love the thing about the Japanese coffee commercial inspiring modern shooters lol. I told a friend of mine that to his confusion and explained that he would need to watch a four and a half hour documentary to understand why. Needless to say he thinks I have no life

This was an incredible insight into just how much work was put into early saturn software development. After this video I have a whole lot more appreciation for my copy of virtua cop that's for sure. Utterly fascinating to hear those stories from the developers of the game. Thanks for all your amazing research.

Just starting watching it today. And all i can say is that your work is very impressive. Although I never grew up with a saturn as a kid, as i was born in 95, and my first console to own was the switch, your level of effort in these documentaries makes me realize how amazing of a community of this console is. Keep up the great work, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. You have made someone who had minimal access to gaming as a kid to someone having a much higher interest into gaming. Congrads man, your nothing short of amazing.

Whew! Finally finished the video. Absolutely amazing! That ending credits was so beautifully done like the end of a long journey. Also at 4:02:20 I remember owning a clamshell-designed Tiger Virtua Cop game back in the day. If I recall they were called "Sega Pocket Arcade"

Half way through, but I am really enjoying this so far. The fact that you got all those devs in video call is just amazing. Mr Isono made me laugh with this reaction: "Wait a second. Mr Sekine, you weren't a programmer" 😂 I was also disappointed with how Daytona USA, and Virtua Fighter looked. They played great, but was expecting graphics much closer to their arcade counterparts. So when I bought Virtua Cop, it just blew me away. Textured polygons, no issues with polygon pop-in, tight gameplay, and a fantastic gun. Such a shame that I have never played its sequel. None of my local shops ever sold it, nor House of the Dead 😭. I have also never encountered Virtua Cop 1 or 2 in an arcade.

There are so many wonderful, delicious interactions throughout this whole thing. The dude getting nervous when asking an American in English what he thinks about Mario 64, the bit towards the end where Mr. Ohashi left a note to everyone expressing his hope to make another game together someday, the whole group's reaction to Nick expressing familiarity with Death Crimson... there's so much to love, such a vibrant human element at play. It's a 4.5-hour work of art.

DUDE. As a long time Sega fan and Saturn early adopter in 1995, this has so far been one of the most incredible gaming documentaries for me. I really can't believe how great this is. I can't wait to finish the rest. Thank you so much for making this! You guys have a new fan.

Just came across this channel having found out about from a podcast. Loving the channel generally, very funny and informative. This is an amazing video and one of the best, if not the best, Saturn video on KZbin. More of this level of depth and information please. Love that you go and speak to the developers, these people won’t be around forever so it’s great to document their thoughts and memories.

I can tell you for sure it had to be done, and thanks to you, we have a big stone for Virtua Cop's making of. Problem : we want more now. Thank you for showing with so many details the mindset of the market at the time concerning the Sega Saturn in the US.

This was amazing, even taking it chaper by chapter each of the main ones is so jammed packed full of interest that each chapter felt like its own documentary. The chapter 3 vaporwave section while comparing details was amazing it set a tone and style that made what would otherwise be a dry informational section engaging too!
