The one thing that should be realized in this comparison is that it shows just how amazing the Dreamcast library really was and how well it’s held up to it’s Arcade counterpart. Even to this day it is considered one of my favorite systems of all time there have been some amazing memories and titles made and purchased in this current generation but I have to say as far as retro and one of my most near and dear to heart systems it has to be the dreamcast by far

Curious to note that the Arcade version also had capped graphips in comparison with the original VF3 in order to comport 3 chars in a fight, but many magazines at the time didn't state for this, simply saying that the Dreamcast version was inferior when it wasn't, it was on pair with its counterpart.

This game was originally for the Saturn and was canceled. So what you see here is a mid-generation port AM2 were too busy at the time so went to another studio. Considering it was hurried to match the release of the Dreamcast they did a good job. I think if it was made for the Dreamcast from the start and given the time needed it could have been arcade-perfect just look at Namco's Soul Calibur remake for the Dreamcast!

@@RGF People tend to say this because they like to defend the DC; but the arcade-version had a LOT of difficulties to overcome, too, such as enormous time pressure, unfinished specs for the board that arrived with many delays, pressure from other arcade companies such as Nameco, a completely new and MUCH, much more complex and difficult to code platform than the DC and the fact that 3D-engines and general knowledge just was not as advanced in 96 as it was in 98. But yes, the DC-port is actually quite good and you have to look careful to make out the differences. It ist not arcade-perfect, but a great game nonetheless!

Just so you know there were two versions of Virtua Fighter 3 in the arcade. The vanilla version and the tb (team battle) version. AM2 only works on the vanilla version and that one was suppose to be ported to the Sega Saturn but Sega instead assign AM2 to make the Virtua Fighter RPG instead, an RPG that would eventually become Shenmue. When the Dreamcast arrive, Sega choose Virtua Fighter 3 the tb version to be ported to Dreamcast instead of the vanilla version. That is why the Dreamcast version felt a bit inferior.

It's a shame texture resolution was lower on the DC. especially since the hardware had such good texture compression techniques (something I believe wasn't used in Virtua Fighter 3tb, I can't find any compression artifacts). The stencil shadows are a bit weird as well on DC. and the blue lighting is missing on the beach stage, but other than that. The models seem to be on par with the arcade, and in general it's a very decent port. On a CRT I'm guess I would be hard pressed to spot a difference. It's much better than the terrible Sega Rally 2 port (which is basically a port of a Windows port of the arcade)

The Dreamcast-version ran at a higher resolution, tho (640x480 compared to 496x384... that is about 60% more pixels). Not a 100% perfect port, but I think it was quite satisfying with only minor differences.
@MH-yp6wg Жыл бұрын
BTW, even considering texture compression, Model 3 had VASTLY more memory for textures (and everything else) available than the dreamcast, so it is not a shame at all that textures on DC were not as sharp.

Yu Suzuki announced a Sega Saturn port at a late 1996 press conference (the same conference at which Fighters Megamix was unveiled), elaborating that AM2 research had been studying Virtua Fighter 3 for the past few months and had at last determined that it was possible to create a Saturn port comparable to the arcade version.[16][17] To facilitate the conversion, AM2's Research and Development labs spent some months working on a 3D accelerator cartridge for the Saturn, but the cartridge was canceled for undisclosed reasons. Sega officials nonetheless stated that Virtua Fighter 3 would be ported to the Saturn with or without the upgrade cartridge.[18] According to insiders, this cartridge was being designed by Lockheed Martin Corporation and based on the same Real3D chipset used in their upcoming 3D accelerator card for PCs.[19] Staff from Core Design claimed to have seen the completed 3D accelerator cartridge in action during an early 1997 visit to Sega of Japan, running a demo of the Saturn version of Virtua Fighter 3 with two playable characters

I've never seen Virtua Fighter 3 anywhere! (if i did i do not remember at all 😅 ) But since we're comparing Arcade version Vs Dreamcast version, i was expecting some improvement overall compared to Virtua Fighter 2 - which i've seen in the Arcades and i had for Sega Saturn. And i'm extremely disappointed at VF3. Why? -No significant graphics improvement! (remember we're at Sony's PS2 level) -Cocky music, and annoying sound effects still inherited from VF1... (no creativity in there, plain Copy-Paste) -Crappy physics! (even Tekken 2's surreal physics look more real than the ones in VF3) -Still too many common moves under the same circumstances between characters: on the ground, on the air, standing up, no matter if it's kick or punch, although they supposedly represent different martial arts. (this is VF3, they had 3 chances to add even more realism as well improve it) -From what i can see of your Gameplay, Special moves look like it's still hard to perform so, it means the inputs to control the characters abilities are still the same since VF1. -Simple minded backgrounds hardly animated. -Still using the same Virtua Racing quality kind of looking Font, like this is still a 16bit game. Overall, this is a lazy-arse game! Conceived from Copy-Pasting most of the things from the previous games, with simple improvements but no innovation whatsoever. Besides the fact that the Dreamcast had no retrocompatibility with Saturn, is no surprise when we wonder why SEGA lost the gaming war for Sony: greedyness, anti-pragmatic strategies, child-minded marketing philosophy, no serious long term goal except to leech the hard-earned money from long term SEGA fans. I never was a big fan of VF but what Virtua Fighter 4 showed me was, that lots of things that should had been already implemented in VF3 arrived too late in VF4 when SEGA had already lost the hardware department. Miguito Retro-San! I bid you a good week and a safe quarantine! Cheers e até qualquer dia... ^_^)

I can see you dislike Virtua Fighter but it was and still is a great game not sure about copy and paste either. The game had multi level stages with some stages having walls compared to Virtua Fighter 2 every stage was square Everyone had new moves with an improved physics engine over the previous game, the dodge button changed gameplay significantly. Not to mention the graphics compared to Virtua Fighter 3 1 Million polygons per second compared to Virtua Fighter 2 300,000 polygons 2 New playable characters At the time of release Virtua Fighter 3 was a huge improvement over Virtua Fighter 2 We were not at PS2 Level the Model 3 Arcade was released in 1996 where the PS2 was released in 2000 The improvement was obvious at the time of release nothing could match the graphical fidelity and the gameplay was praised a lot too. I agree with you on one thing only to be honest and that is the music was not great
