I remember seeing and playing Virtua Fighter 3 in the 90s for the very first time as a teenager, the graphic just blew my mind. I just couldn't believe graphics at this level in real time were possible. To me it looked like pre-rendered FMV, it was amazing seeing that first hand for the very first time. The amazing detail in the smooth life like characters, the undulating stages which were all different, the tropical stage with the lapping water on the sand and the desert stage with sand that reacted to the feet of the moving characters were miles ahead of what anyone else was doing at the time. It's also a great game to play as well. The graphics drew my in but it's the gameplay that really captivated me, VF3 is definitely my favourite entry VF series.

VF3 all day. It was revolutionary when it came out. Clothes moving realistically, eyes tracking your opponents movements, actual realistically uneven stages and terrain, etc. It’s a beautiful game and mind blowing for 1996. The game was more impressive than any other game at the time graphically. Oh yea and Tekken (once again) stole from VF when they made Tekken 4. They used uneven stages as well.

Virtua Fighter 3 easily wins. ... Virtua Fighter 3 may have been released a year earlier, but Virtua Fighter 3 ran on the Model 3 Hardware that cost $20,000 at the time it was made. There is no comparison in graphic quality - look how Tekken 3 has page-tearing, pixel problems, and even polygon-popup problems. Virtua Fighter 3 doesn't have any of those problems.

One reason that Sega was superior in arcades is because she used her own custom and expensive 3d hardware. This alone made her queen of 3d arcades. Unlike Namco who abandoned that idea and after System 22 they used ready Playstation hardware,System 12 is just an overclocked Psx

No personal computer was capable of running Virtua fighter 3 or any other model 3 arcade game. The cabinets were $30,000 each. The workstation used were not PC's. It's not like now. Virtua Fighter 3 was a generation ahead =P. Dreamcast was in the 7th gen of gaming consoles, PS2, XBOX, GC, and Dreamcast, But Sega released the Dreamcast too soon and didn't profit enough from the Saturn before killing it, so they couldn't afford to produce the Dreamcast and had to shut down there hardware division because they ran out of funds. Sega was doing what Apple, Google and Microsoft does when they kill something they just released before it returns a profit, except Sega did not have a billion dollars to waste, and was doing it over and over.

Ok comrades. Vf3 was indeed a visual masterpiece for its time. Tekken 3 could not compare graphically but for those of us that lived and know the history, Tekken 3 was the start of Tekken's dominance over Virtua Fighter. The gameplay and overall appeal of Tekken 3 made more gamers gravitate to the franchise. I'm a SEGA admirer that absolutely loves Yu Suzuki's work and AM2. I feel the truth needs to be said here. I can remember back when Namco used to be referred to as Fake Sega. Every game Sega innovated and released, Namco tried to counter them. Namco really exploded by being able to port near perfect arcade titles to the PS1. Tekken 3 sold millions of copies while VF3 was pretty much a bust on Dreamcast. Tekken's characters and games are more appealing, far better story, great sountracks, endings and solid gameplay. Tekken 3 had that "cool factor" to it. VF is more technical and has much deeper mechanics but the appeal of the series went flat.

This is true. The reason why is because VF2 didn't have any of the graphic problems that Tekken 3 does. Tekken has problems with pixelation, screen-tearing, and polygon popup. Virtua Fighter 2 in the arcade and on Saturn doesn't have any of those problems.

VF2 arcade DESTROYS Tekken 3 arcade in terms of graphics. This is not disputable. This is because Model 2 was a vastly superior arcade board to Namco System 12. Simply put, SEGA had the superior arcade tech. What's interesting is that if we compare VF2 on Saturn vs Tekken 3 on PS1, imo the Saturn version still has the better graphics. Technically the only thing PS1 does better than the Saturn in these ports is it's lighting. Which you think looks better does somewhat come down to taste regarding the art styles.... VF has a cleaner, more vibrant and colourful style which I think has aged a lot better than the murky colours and primitive lighting of the the PS1 Tekken games. Plus AM2 were imo, superior at programming the Saturn and making best use of it's architecture than Namco were with the PS1. Side note- VF2 on Saturn looks way better than Tekken 2 on PS1.

That is why my friends and I prefer Virtua Fighter rather than Tekken. ... The only things in Tekken's favour were: 1 - It was on the more popular home console, hence people were more familiar with it 2 - A Tekken 3 arcade was probably a lot cheaper and therefore more common than a VF3 arcade due to the vastly inferior hardware.

Well in my case it was the opposite. I could have access to a Virtua Fighter 3 cabinet around 1997/1998 (can't remember the exact date). Never saw a Tekken 3 cabinet though, I could only play it through a friend who had the PlayStation version.

Albert Wesker I only saw Virtua Fighter 3 in one arcade which was across from the ocean. I don't think the Namco Funland arcades in the mall wanted to put Sega games in their arcades so you would only see Tekken 3 and X-Men vs. Street Fighter at the time. No House of The Dead there either. I found House of The Dead at every arcade on the Wildwood, New Jersey boardwalk the summer (1997) it came out though.

Model 3 era um hardware bem diferente do dreamcast. A NAOMI era baseado no dreamcast. Model 3 ainda usou a real3d da lockheed/martin. Usava quads no lugar de triangulos, como a model2 e o saturn. A NAOMI/dreamcast usavam o powervr.

Model 3 has tech ahead of it´s time, and may be in numbers it could even surpass a Dreamcast (but its complicated architecture is too different to DC or any console)....But facts are, even with DC having downgraded Model 3 ports (not too much dowgraded, Virtual On has techinically no downgrades, and with Sega Rally 2, VF 3 and Fighting Vipers 2 you gotta put both side to side to tell the small differences) no MODEL 3 game looks better than DOA 2, Test Drive Le Mans or Ferrari F355...

Visually, VF3 hands down. Gameplay wise, I'd say they are pretty equal. Tekken maybe "faster" in terms of combos and special attacks, but Virtua Fighter is more about technique, but because they are so different it is tough to compare. I'd love to see an VF 4 vs. Tekken 4 and VF 5 vs. Tekken 5 comparison. 😊

Virtua fighter siempre ha tenido másas calidad referente al modelado de personajes aunque tekken 3 rompió moldes con su motion capture. VF1 aprovechaba todo el poder de la model 1 mientras que Tekken implantada fotos en el fondo para centrarse más en los personajes. Pasó algo parecido con VF2 y Tekken 2, el 3 de ambas partes se está viendo en el vídeo, pero sega empezó a darle caña con el motion capture a partir del VF4 y la verdad es que tenían una combinación para mí, muy buena, gráficamente difícil de superar y movimientos mucho más realistas. Pero lo que siempre le ha faltado a VF es ese puntito de "maldad" que siempre ha tenido Tekken. VF3 has undeniably superior graphics, but Tekken3 was developed so that it could be ported to PlayStation1. No console, at the time, had the capacity to have a decent version of VF3, much less the Saturn which is weak in 3D. Result: PlayStation1 received a brilliant port of Tekken3 and VF3 only received a poor Dreamcast port. Graficamente, Tekken 3 nem tem chance, rodando numa placa que era um Play 1 turbinado. Entretanto, na transição para os consoles, Tekken 3 foi muito mais feliz, Namco fez magia negra para aquele jogo rodar a 60fps no PSOne. Já VF3, que ficou nas mãos da Genki, sofreu no Dreamcast, a versão Arcade, mesmo rodando na Model 3, que era inferior a Naomi, ficou bem melhor.

You cannot compare 90s sega vs namco,sega hav been using state of the art pcbs like model 2 and model 3 in comparison to namco cheap offerings system 11 ps1 hardware system 12 ps1 with more memory and system 22 the only high end offering by namco but nothing special compare to the beast model 3 was.In the end sega was a true pioneer in the field of graphics and gameplay mechanics.I was lucky to witness all the greatness of 90s arcade

I prefer tekkens art style and UI, it had more movement and variety, for example paul vs eddy was red vs green, nina is purple, king is blue and yellow etc, and it extends to the entire rest of the UI and even the stage variety, they're all flat planes but you can tell them apart, it was a good use of space, hard to even tell which one has higher polygon counts on the characters vf had true 3D stages, so they sorta stand out by default, it's a technically more powerful cabinet too so it generally looks more realistic, with stuff like lighting and whatnot, but I think that's all been said in other comments

The 2 games cannot be compared, because the Virtua Fighter wad based on the next gen card Model 3 , in the while Tekken 3, was running in the same card that made works Tekken 2... I Remember playing that game on PsX, it was almost arcade perfect, i got big doubt that PsX could handle same quality conversion of Virtua Fighter 3, so even if the 2 games been released almost same time and Tekken even later, they were not comparable at all.

so i was a sega fanboy , looking at vf3 in every magazine comparing it to tekken 3 . While vf looks cleaner , smoother and moves more smoothly tekken 3 holds up well for a far less powerfull board . in fact tekken 3 looks cooler in its art design i think , less cheesy and cool lighting / fx . vf3 for general modelling and lighting , tekken 3 for the cool factor and music

Aaron Hernandez the arcade version of Tekken Tag runs on the exact same hardware (system 12) as Tekken 3. In fact it actually has WORSE image quality than Tekken 3 to compensate for having to keep more characters in memory during gameplay.
