Yu Suzuki personally handled the conversion with full access to the Saturn development team, you should expect no less. The amount of resources/time needed to develop and showcase even 1/2 the level of the Saturn's prowess is the main reason most smaller/mid 3rd parties struggled on the platform.

@@NB-1 psx could never handle Sonic R according to the developers (Traveller's Tales) and they coded for both machines on its day. Panzer Dragoon II Zwei and Saga are also far beyond of what the psx could handle, Radiant Silvergun and Last Bronx also could never work on the psx because of the slower cpu, gpu and less polygon density. The best ps1 could do is Quake 2, Metal Gear Solid, Gran Turismo 2 and Toy Story 2 (very impressive).

Ps Saturn outputs more texture mapped polygons on paper than the PS1, this is a fact. With lighting and all the Saturn takes a hit, but again the point is Saturn is sometimes better and you have to get over it.

While VF2 on Saturn couldn't hold a candle to the Model 2 version graphically, it still played great, and looked pretty good as far as home games go... I also had already owned Tekken 2 on PS1 for a while when I finally got a Saturn+VF2... and I always maintained that VF2 on Saturn was definitely the superior graphically. Seems this video backs up my memories! The PS1 only wins on the shading which I think even the Model 2 couldn't do (until the 2B revision or something like that). The arcade version of Tekken 2 has a slightly higher poly count than the PS1 version. This isn't due to a difference in hardware power as the System 11 board is identical in terms of processing power to the PS1. The issue is the lack of memory on the PS1. If I had to guess, probably the PS1 had enough memory, but it would have resulted in longer loading times. I remember seeing the arcade version and definitely noticing the difference. It wasn't a massive difference, and the home port is still amazing, but the difference was there all the same. I also maintain that Saturn VF2 looks better than the arcade version of Tekken 2, for whatever that's worth. :)

Both are great games. Tekken 2 used best light effects and is fun. Virtua Fighter 2 has better designs 3D, it is smoother, faster and has better animations. I personally like more VF2, I consider a more complete game. In this time the press supported more tekken and playstation consoles, but time is putting things in place.

EGM didn't really hate Saturn. They disliked SOA's over attitude and treatment of it. They also RESENTED Bernie Stolar because everytime they tried to review games for it, he would never send them demo copies without paying full price.

You're right, it did seem like some magazines at the time only gave favorable reviews to the more popular games. This of course led to the Saturn not getting a lot of credit for what it did have, but if you knew what magazines to read, you knew the Saturn had great games! I remember my favorite magazine, Game Players, gave Virtua Fighter 2 a 99%, which was the highest score they had ever given, and said, "If you own a Saturn and don't buy this game, you're just plain stupid."

Tekken 3 came out over two years after Virtua Fighter 2 so it's not much of an accomplishment to have been better. In any event, I don't remember any VF game being particularly popular.

Take a look at the Shun Di stage on VF2. The thing that actually impresses me the most about it is how it uses parallax scrolling on VDP1 to simulate the water moving. The backgrounds are 2D in VF2 but it still gives the illusion of movement and more activity going on in the background as opposed to Tekken 2's static lifeless backdrops. I give it to VF2 on this one. I think it's a very impressive port and a technical marvel that SEGA-AM2 managed to convert that game from a $20,000 arcade board to a system that wasn't quite known for its 3D prowess at the time. It's super impressive what SEGA pulled off with that port. Tekken 2 is still a nice looking game, but maybe less impressive to me because the Arcade Hardware it derives from was a form of the PlayStation architecture (just souped up a bit) where as VF2 is just a mightily impressive port going from the technologically superior Model 2 board down to the Frankenstein-like architecture of the Saturn.

Tekken has some nice lightning effects going for it, but VF2 is clearly superior in every other technical aspect. Resolution, textures, framerate, animations, backgrounds, even the transparent(!) character shadows look way better. AM2 really showed of with this port!

VF2 looks much better, but that's no knock on Tekken 2, which also looks and plays terrific. But Sega's title is remembered as a classic for a reason. It was a technical showpiece for its era. If anything, VF2 on Saturn was too good, as it set a standard that just could never be surpassed (although Megamix, Last Bronx, DOA, Anarchy and Zero Divide may disagree).

Played VF for two years straight, it's like Street Fighter when it comes to tactics, no Tekken I have ever seen matches that. Might be a matter of taste but the tech fighters were my favorit because of VF & StrF. Doa was a fine game but lacked finesse, en Last Brox... good try but too little / more shallow. Would still play those over Tekken any day, but Virtua Fighter 2 is king on all front. VF 3 was even better on a tech front but I think people didn't like it as much in the west because it was too complicated. Loved it. I stii do a stun palm of doom in my sleep, wakes the wife.

Looking back, Tekken 2 may not been as fast as VF2, but clearly it paved way for the Tekken series far more better than the first game. Everyone has their own taste, but I'm a Tekken of course but to avoid Bias, I think both games are great in their own ways

Always mixed neo geo and sega cd up for no reason. I had this image of the sega saturn, just the image. I tought it really flopped because it sucked. didn't know but was really curious. I scored one cheap in a local store with sega rally, well it far from sucked. Bough fighting vipers and virtua fighter next, i'll be damned. Vf2 for christmas wich i played the shoddy pc port of around 94, 95 on 486 or something. I played it earlier because i had my ways of beeing kinda spoiled bratt at times XD. Wow, those graphics. nights, panzer dragoon. One of my top 10 best systems ever. it's such a mysterious console also .Liked all 3 tough, n64 is the strange one tough. Them blurry graphics -_-.

Tekken was (and still is) my 3d fighter of choice. It made me buy a Playstation back in 1996. It just packed more punch than VF. Having said that, VF2 is a way more accomplished game. It looks a bit flat, but still very slick and it matured in its gameplay way more than Tekken did with T2 (it was an awesome sequel, but it wasn't until T3 that Tekken truly defined itself). I will always prefer Tekken, but objectively, VF2 is the clear winner here.

VF2 has a much better resolution, characters perfectly modeled, without bugs, stable polygons, clean, detailed textures, fluid animation, details like a flowing stream, passing birds, movements of heads fighters who follow each other's movements, multi plans backgrounds. So Tekken 2 has dynamic lighting but this game also has wallpaper as backgrounds, unstable polygons, bugs, medium textures, slow animation, cubic characters , bad aliasing and a casual gameplay ......

In addition there is also a mechanism of blocking, counter attack and tricks which do not exist in Tekken.

Some problems with this comparison that need to be understood. Sega Enterprises LTD Japan's Arcade division SEGA-AM2 was using high end, super expensive arcade boards with some very powerful processors that in total would lead to cabinets that could cost upwards of $8,000 USD equivalent or higher... so the Sega Model 1 Virtua Fighter 1993 and Sega Model 2 Virtua Fighter 2 were running on some super high end hardware basically. Namco did have a high end arcade board named the Namco System 22 or Super System 22 however they decided to use the Sony PlayStation hardware as the System 11 arcade board and thus Tekken 1 is a 1994 arcade release and a year later it is on PS1 while Tekken 2 is on the SAME hardware with some really hardcore arcade dev team doing things no other third party or first party was doing on PS1. Sega Saturn is a low cost for mass production arcade and home system so although SEGA-AM2 made VF1 by November 1994, it had to meet a deadline for the system launch and Virtua Fighter 2 is also having to meet a deadline during 1995 to give the Saturn (in Japan) another hit game... as such VF2 on Saturn is a Dec 1995 release but PS1 Tekken 2 was a 96 release.. Yeah they were sort of talked about and compared but in all seriousness a longer developed VF2 on Saturn would have taken more months to make. VF was horribly marketed by Sega of America... but the gamer magazines gave Tekken most of the repeat coverage.

For me it was a different story. Back in the day I was not able to understand why anyone would want a PSX over the Saturn, and VF2 was the only proof that I needed. 60 fps@highres made anything else feel totally inferior by miles! What was even more bizarre was the fact that Sega totally missed the chance to put up some tv spot with footage taken from this game (and also Sega Rally) in my country. Only few people knew about the existance of the console - what a shame!

sdmayday Which country are you in? I'm in the UK. We got naff all advertising for the Saturn over here. Tekken 2 was about the only game I envied not having on Saturn. Back in the old days, my PS1 friends would rant about the 28 characters and so on. Plus it was a little easier to pick up. Still, I was more than happy with Virtua Fighter 2. Plus we had Fighters Megamix to fit that slot.

I am from Germany and being the only one owning a Saturn on school wasnt all that bad. I was the first one to play Tomb Raider after all. But beeing a Sega fanboy felt almost like living in an alternate reality. There was next to no media presence and thus psx was the topic on school yards. The console and great titles existed and I was the only one who new about it. I pittied psx owners for not being able to play Panzer Dragoon, but unless they were into reading multi format gaming mags there was no way for them to know better. What a shame! Everyone should have experienced that series!

The United Kingdom was pretty much the only country in Europe where the Sega Saturn had some acceptance and a certain media coverage in the likes of the Official Sega Saturn Magazine (one of the best dedicated console magazines ever created for sure). The rest of us in Europe got the cold shoulder in everything regarding the Sega Saturn and that ended up showing in poor European sales aside from British ones. I knew very few people with a Sega Saturn back then. In fact, Sega Europe put a strong initial European support of the Sega Saturn with several multi-lingual Sega Saturn games like Mansion of Hidden Souls and Panzer Dragoon, and not long after that the European game localization policy of Sega Europe was switched to English only, even for some third party games published by Sega Europe for the Sega Saturn that had been localized to other languages in other platforms like Resident Evil and Tomb Raider (third party companies, on the other hand, were more akin to localise their games in all versions for all systems, including the Sega Saturn) because the Sega Saturn was bombing in pretty much everywhere in Europe except the United Kingdom, unlike what had happened with the Master System and the Mega Drive. I have to say though, the PlayStation took a while to really get on track here, because I didn't know a lot people actually having the console before mid-late 1997. Up to that point most people were still sticking with their 16-bit consoles or were PC gamers which I was too, and that actually helped a lot to complement the Sega Saturn catalogue, especially when it was starting to getting dry here.

It's always amusing to watch casual gamers play fighting games. They tend to just mash buttons and find one move that "works." Tekken 3 was enormously popular because of Eddy Gordo, who has this elaborate gymnastics maneuver that knocks opponents silly while all you do is mash the kick buttons. Because of this, Virtua Fighter, which is much closer to a martial arts sim, never achieved more than minor cult status in the West, despite its success in Japan. As for these two videogames, they do a great job of showing off each system's strengths. VF2 is a technical showcase for Saturn's 480/60 high resolution graphics and extremely fluid motions, and Tekken 2 demonstrates the Playstation's mastery of lighting effects (without looking garish or overdone). Personally, I prefer VF2 for its far more complex and involving fighting system, as well as its stunning visuals and audio. But if you have a PSX, you definitely need to have Tekken 2 & 3 in your library.

No es un juego ni facil ni accesible para todo el mundo. El VF5 es una maravilla a este nivel. Tekken 2 looks so simple in graphics, an 2d background, and 3d characters...just that. Virtua Fighter 2 has a lot more of work here, almost everything is 3d, characters, backgrounds, it moves on 60 fps. The winner to me here is VF2.

However, first of all, Virtua Fighter 2 uses a much higher resolution than Tekken 2 but then again, Tekken 3 also was in high resolution. Textures were better in Virtua fighter 2. VF2 also had those scaled rotating backgrounds to emulate the 3D environments from the arcade version and it had a fully rendered ring with actual boundaries. There's absolutely no doubt that Virtua Fighter 2 is a much better looking game than Tekken 2. Now, Virtua Fighter 2 doesn't have those CGI videos the Tekken franchise was famous for, nor does it have those CGI intros... If I remember well, Tekken 2 also had some extra modes... but if what you want is a good looking fighting game, VF2 for the win. It's also easier to pick up and play. All that being said... ... ... Fighting game purists of the day would laugh at this comparison. Virtua Fighter and Street Fighter were "real" fighting games cause you couldn't get away with mashing buttons. Mortal Kombat and Tekken were "arcade fighters" meant for quick fun but lacked the depth for true competition. Aside from that VF was strictly locked to 60 FPS because that's critical in competition, while Tekken was all over the place. Saturn was more powerful but also harder to program for so half assed developers couldn't take advantage of it, just like PS3. Tekken tried adding a sh*tload of useless moves to compete with VF for real street cred but didn't dare change the formula to alienate casuals, leaving Tekken 2 inferior to 1 in some ways. In the end: Tekken=Mindless bashing with your buddies but full of cheap infuriating moves. VF=Bring your A game and leave your little brother at home cause button mashing doesn't work. Like arcade vs sim racing games both have their place.

Both were the epitome of 3d console fighting games at the time. Tekken is flashier... and blockier. VF2 is flatter yet sharper. VF has better core gameplay, but Tekken is easier to jump in and start playing. Tekken also has a lot of extras compared to the more barebone VF2. Both have some classic tunes, but Tekken has the edge there. Sound effects/voices are crisper too (VF is muffled). I still prefer VF2 overall though.

tekken 2 run at 60fps like virtua fighter 2, the resolution is different, psx has less memory than saturn (remember that saturn was created with 2d monstrous capabilities at time) and developers preferred to use high poligon count than high resolution. (I am a Sega Fan)

VF2's is technically superior. Always was > Tekken 2. However, Namco injected a soul, feel and personality into Tekken with its character designs, story, music etc that VF can't and won't ever match. For all the depth VF offers in mechanics etc it's so shallow in so many other areas that gamers also place high importance in. Again; that typical SEGA arcade only approach that saw them die with the SAT and DC whilst the PS1 and PS2 thrived by trying to evolutionise console gaming beyond just 'arcade perfect'...

both have their graphical strengths, so this one is very subjective without using some form of point system to judge every aspect of each game. Technical points aside, I do prefer the brighter saturated colors of VF2, as well as the artistry and overall styling of the fighters. Factoring all that I can see with the games in motion, I do feel VF2 is the superior looking fighter, but I think ones argument for either could probably be well justified.

Virtua fighter 2 looks so much better despite being even a year older than tekken 2. The game also looks considerably better on my saturn due to playing pal, which has a higher resolution with custom made csync saturn rgb cabled with seperated audio. These comparison videos should be done with best possible video output and not s-video or even worse...

i don't see comparison,better models vf2 tekken had blocky characters,better floor saturn,better backdrops saturn not static pictures albeit the fact that the 2 machines missing true 3d backdrops,also animation of vf is far superior in contrast to tekken robotic animation.

Yep. the playstation had no Z buffer - this made the textures warp a lot when only few polygons were used. the more polygons, the less warping.

@@retropolis1 PSX uses no Anti Warping Affines for Infinite Planes. Saturn uses Dual Buffering and Software Z Buffering. PSX also used simultaneous renders so it maxed out Rendered Polygons pretty quickly, but Warping as well as Texture loss and Screen Tearing was very common with PSX since unlike Saturn and N64 it couldn't Perspective Correct or Recalculate layers or Affines.

Can always remember me and my best mate being amazed by virtual fighter one in the arcades then totally blown away by Tekken 1 before the PS1 or Saturn came out I got the PS1 my friend got the Saturn and we used to argue over witch one was best I was in total denial over how good virtual fighter 2 was but I new it was miles better then any other 3d fighter of the time Tekken 3 could most prob give it a run for its money but this was out at least two years before haha fantastic game

But having better graphics was both a blessing and a curse for the VF series mostly during it's early days on the bright side with powerful arcade hardware AM2 was able to innovate and be have better graphics than anyone else but the bad thing is that because the model 2 was powerful it also was very expensive to mass produce which means you would not see vf cabinets everywhere also porting a highly detailed game to a console wasn't easy but Namco never had these problems with Tekken because they used cheap hardware they didn't innovate or tried to be the best but at least their game was more accessible and easier to port.

What makes difficult to compare those games is that the art style can make one or another look technically superior, i think that as a technical stand point both games were pretty even, even Tekken 2 might be using a "better" "more advanced" lighting that was more taxing to the hardware. However as a matter of how it looks i agree that VF2 looks WAYYY BETTER than Tekken 2 because the art style is just better, not a matter of how much polygons but how the artist used those polygons to draw a good looking game. However i think that Tekken 3 got such a huge art style improvement that its looks better than VF2 but still VF2 looks amazing.

Tekken 2 looks like its a Mid Gen Model 1 Arcade game. Notice the lack of filtering and Diffusion on the character models. You can actually see the polygon shapes unfiltered.

Virtua Fighter 2 is already at a disadvantage with being compared to Tekken 2 let alone Tekken 3, because Tekken 2 came out a year after Virtua Fighter 2, and one year is a long time when it comes to game programming advancements. So both Tekken 2 and Tekken 3 are newer than Virtua Fighter 2 and yet Virtua Fighter 2 in some aspects looks better than even Tekken 3.

I think VF2 has much better character models and seems to play better. Tekken has nicer effects and lighting. Tekkens backgrounds look good, but I would say that VF2s are more impressive for the time, I think. Not being a fan of Tekken, I chose VF2 back in the day. The game that I did wish I could get on Saturn was Soul Blade not Tekken.

I gotta say that who ever is playing lacked any kind of fighting skills what so ever! it's more than clear that the differculty was set to easy cause anybody that really played vf2 on normal or hard settings would never be able to button smash there way to the end so easily! the AI in vf2 would own you for trying to play like that as well as tekken 2. these types of games are better if played with skill. I always thought tekken 2 looked good back in the day, however looking at vf2 next to it showed me how much better vf2 looks and play's with its stunning animation and back drops! the Sega Saturn in the right hands was capable of better graphics than the ps1. what a big difference when utilizing VDP1 and VDP2 together as a pose to using just one VDP1 alla most third party game's. vf2 is a shinning example of the true power of the Saturn, as well as Panzers Dragoon 2, Saga and Quake 2 to name a few!

Kind of not a total fair comparison if you ask me, both games are awesome and even tho I'm a huge Sega Saturn fan and I prefer saturn over the Ps1 In my game style "my personal opinion tho it's what I prefer". Absolutely love the Ps1 though fantastic system, I have to say Tekken 2 is the superior game from what I'm seeing. Never played Tekken 2 tho so it's not really good for me to be the judge of this.

Tekken 2's visuals look so sloppy. The characters are unbearably ugly whether in the cut scenes or in gameplay although I prefer the way they look in gameplay because the constant glitching covers up how ugly they are a little bit. Also 6:44 the background is rotating backwards 😂
