Today is the first day I've really researched what being a VA is all about as I consider options to work from home in the near future. I'm pleasantly surprised by the options available. I've always felt that I could do well moderating / supporting a youtube channel but didn't think it is something one could get paid for. Hey this is an extremely valuable and helpful video. I am a military spouse and work remote. I have currently worked with my same employer for a little over 4 years. However they only allow me to work in certain states. I have been interested in becoming a VA for awhile. I currently work as a patient account analyst for hospitals where I review a big inventory of patient accounts and find issues and report back to the hospital managers. Erin, I'm very inclined to start working as VA but I have no technical background. But I'm highly confident that I can perform Travel! Management tasks. I have a solid 5 years of experience being a licensed tour guide. I'm also very familiar with finding cheap flights, booking hotels and transportation. In my spare time, I backpack to remote Asian locations where I do research, plan, and book everything by myself. This is the area of my life in that I put the most attention to detail. Travel management is the niche I can offer. I was looking for job offers/posts like that but I can barely find anything. I know Upwork has a wealth of job openings but I can't get to submit a proposal because I just signed up. Can you recommend another platform where I can offer my service? I also do not mind doing internship jobs for free just to get enough experience.

That's a good question and the only way to really know what the market will support is to start offering the service at the price point you want. If NO clients want to go for it, or claim it's too high, it might be time to lower your rates slightly**

Track with a tool like Harvest or Toggle. You do not need an EIN, you can start work as a "sole proprietor" where you just use your SSN (USA only) for work.

I would still work your main job and start a VA freelancing business on the side. Once you have built up and scaled your va business to the extent that it matches your full time income, then you can let your full time job go. I would also recommend having a 3-6 month emergency fund of expenses before you do this. (Dave Ramsey).

Great question and yes, absolutely! In fact, all of my clients are either solo people or run a small company. Individuals definitely hire VAs. Some of the course material is US specific, like taxes, but I always specify if that’s the case on all lessons!

Great Q! As a business owner, you make the call. before we talk names though, do you plan to open an LLC with a legal business name or are you going to work as a sole proprietor using your SSN? It makes a difference! If you don’t plan to file a separate legal entity, you can essentially call your business whatever you want. If you’re worried about the name for your website, though, you could consider naming it something like EPH Services, or even Erin Parish or Erin Harlow.
