@@darcys842 oh boy, you asked a Canadian historian the right question. So a little background, obviously you know that Canada and GB were at war with Germany and Austro-Hungary. Halifax was the major Canadian port for troop transports, ammunition, and of course explosives. There were 2 ships sailing through the narrowest area in the Halifax Harbour; the SS Imo and the SS Mont Blanc. The Mont Blanc was carrying about 2.7 megatons (27,000,000 kg) of various explosives like picric acid, gun cotton, and gasoline. Basically the two ships collided at like 9:05 am and the Mont Blanc drifted towards pier 6 of the Halifax harbor and exploded. It was the largest non-nuclear explosion in history and leveled every building in a 1.6 mile radius. Lots of civilians were looking at the burning ship through their single pane glass windows of the time. The explosion killed about 1,700 people instantly and permanently blinded hundred of survivors who saw the explosion. The explosion prompted the closest city, Boston to send doctors, construction workers, and any other aid to the city by train as quickly as possible, saving countless lives in the process. To this day Halifax sends Boston a giant fir Christmas tree every year as a gracious thanks for the help they gave us in our time of need.

Of anyone to know the system was a failure, wouldn’t it be the company who put it out? It’s not like they backed it for 5 years, saw they were losing millions and then were like “what a success!” They stopped putting out games for it in 8 months so obviously 20 years later they know it’s a failure, clearly that’s evident with the Wii U too given all the ports it’s not like some secret knowledge to have lol

I got it as a present as a kid and liked it fine. The modern day hype against it isn't reality. It was sad it didn't do well, but my family knew I enjoyed it. I remember playing Red Alarm in the car and feeling like I was moving forward in my ship. Fun times.
@TroyBlackford3 жыл бұрын
@@humanthehuman8016 Thanks! It was obvious pretty quickly it wasn't a huge hit, but like getting it as a kid in those pre-internet times, your immediate impression was only what you thought yourself. I remember being blown away by the detailed, 32-bit sprites in Teleroboxer, for example. Way beyond SNES level spritework. Red Alarm seemed *so* futuristic! It seemed to have so much potential, and I kick myself now that I never knew as a kid that Wario Land VB came out, because I would have loved that. It is weird, the internet has the power to rewrite pre-internet history. I'm sure a lot of people hated it, but I bet most of the people who bought one liked what few games they had. It's like, how can they make a robust game library for a system that sold 770,000? And yet the people who *did* buy it weren't responsible for that, so it sucked. Never regretted getting it, just that it flopped so hard that it was put out to pasture. The 3D effect was striking, and I honestly loved and still love the crazy mix of four shades of red and black coupled with a CPU that put the Gameboy to shame: this thing delivered sprites that looked very modern in 1995. I really missed sprites as 3D graphics took over, and seeing what a step up from even SNES, let alone Gameboy, could do in that area was really cool. A missed opportunity. You can tell from the homebrew scene that there's a lot of potential here. I loved the sound, too. The controller was really ahead of its time. Red Alarm had more modern controls than anything else would for years. Wish there were more games, for sure. Would love to have seen what that Mario Land VB would have been like. A sequel to Link's Awakening on this would have ruled! Looking down into a little diorama filled with Hyrule, how cool would that have been? A Metroid would have been great: the bleak aesthetic of a ruined planet would have meshed great with the crimson monochrome screen. I don't mind people slagging it off, I get it, but it wasn't like that when it came out. You could tell it flopped, but it wasn't like "Why did I buy this?!" It was more like "Damn, but I got this because I wanted games for it!"
@TroyBlackford3 жыл бұрын
