Virtual Desktop is a total must have for every Quest / Pico user. Every other solution cannot compete with this one. The developer is very supportive and cares about every single issue. Tweaking the settings to get VR games running properly on a mid-range PC needs quite a lot more fiddling around with settings and knowledge on how resolution, VRAM, CPU+GPU and in-game graphics settings (especially texture size and DLSS) are working together. Most content creators do have a RTX 4080 GPUs or higher, so almost every game will run pretty good even with high standard settings. But if you have a RTX 2070 SUPER or RTX 3070 Laptop things are very different. You need to consider Codec Type, VRAM usage a lot and in some games like No Man's Sky or Kajak Mirage VR there is no way around using SSW to get a smooth gameplay with a decent visual quality. In the end a lot comes down to personal preference too. Some people may like a buttersmooth 90fps experience more than crisp graphis, others can't stand a single stutter. But i think it's important for the VR market and especially for new users, who may have used standalone to date and want to try PCVR, to know that they don't need a high end GPU to run VR. Of course sacrifices need to be made if you run VR on a RTX 2070 with only 8GB of VRAM. It's possible, but unfortunately not in quick and easy steps.

The real message here is that you need to learn how to use VD, so this video is a baseline for beginners to start with. As for all content creators having an RTX 4080 😂 I only just upgraded from a 2080 TI

@@MacInVR my fastest GPU is still a RTX 4070 with 12GB, which i would consider to be in the midrange area, but i also have PCs with an RTX 2070S, RTX 3070 and RTX 3070 Laptop, which all have 8GB of VRAM (and every system has different CPUs too). The baseline to start with VR and VD for people with those type of systems needs to consider VRAM, STEAM VR and in-game settings and how to measure the maximum performance on those type of systems and then go up with certain settings to get the best performance and/or visuals possible. There is basically no real beginners guide available how to run PCVR as a total newbie and explanation how all of this works to understand where to optimize depending on your individual preferences. But i guess that would just miss the point here, since this needs to be explained in-depth in a longer video with real-life examples. And those are not quick and easy steps.

Should I use VD if I have a rtx3070 32 gb of fast ram and I9? I have always used steam vr to play my games and have issues with stutters, shakes and black judders. Would VD help any of this? Thanks
@MacInVR

Give it a try. Your system is perfectly capable of running on high setting (streamer tab). Meta has a very good refund policy, so if you use VD for less than 2 hours and you don't like it, you can get a full refund. However, if you're getting the same problems with VD (stutter/shakes), then there is something wrong with your setup so jump over to my discord for further help 😉

I'm using Virtual Desktop since my Oculus Go and I never would have bought a Pico4 if it didn't have Virtual Desktop. All of my headsets have it. One thing I noticed: you should have the 2.4 ghz channel and the 5 ghz channel of your router separated, so your headset doesn't have the option to choose automatically the strongest signal. With my Quest3 there is not much of a problem, but I noticed that my Pico4 liked to pick the 2.4 channel. Now seperated on the router I can dedicate the 5 ghz channel to my Pico4 and have 1200 mbps instead of somewhere lower than 400 mbps. Especially playing Beatsaber with the Pico4 has a lot of latency with the 2.4 channel.

I have about the same setup as you, except for a 4090. I agree will all of your recommendations except for the need of a second router. I'm using a the same wifi6e router you are without any issues as my only router. If you are on the 6ghz network you have few other devices that are even accessing it at the same time over that frequency except for perhaps a newer smartphone. I have never seen any extra latency or drop on quality while playing games at high resolutions or settings. Now if you have a shit router, I'd agree to get a better one, but I don't see the need for a dedicated one. Good video.

Surprisingly enough, I get smoother gameplay with VD WITHOUT my 1660ti 16gb/6gb vram laptop connected to an ethernet cable compared to using Meta quest link's official cable! I bet it'd be EVEN smoother with VD and laptop connected via ethernet. But would love to see a tutorial vid on remote connecting to your pc via VD!

I’ve used VD for +4yrs starting with a Q1 and it works great. Your setup tips are very good. However, with the right settings I get pretty well the same clarity with smoother performance using Air Link at 200mbps Dynamic bitrate (hevc). Each to their own and whichever one works best for you it mainly comes down to personal preference imho. Also, I get the best results with flight sims like msfs2020 with both my Q3 and QPro/rtx4090 using an official link cable connected to my z790mb usb 3.2 type c port with 650mbps encoding bitrate (h264). Bit better distant clarity and 7-10ms lower latency. My z790 mb provides enough power to maintain my headset battery at +80% for +6hrs.

Direct from VD helpline (though I haven't tried it myself). "Can I connect to my computer over the Internet? Yes, make sure "Allow remote connections" is checked in the Streamer window. You'll also need to enable UPnP on your router and the Streamer App will forward the required ports automatically. If you want to manually configure your router, forward TCP ports 38810, 38820, 38830 and 38840. All traffic uses end-to-end encryption"

I understand getting a second router is helpful. Personally i don't have one and don't feel like i need to. Note my main router is in the same room as my playspace. I get 1200 Mbps no problem on my Q2. I did sperate my wifi bands and only have my Quest and Phone using the 5Ghz band. Usually i turn my phone wifi off when playing just in case but i often don't and never had an issue in quality/latency. Now am i not understanding somthing? Am i ignoring the potential benefits? Or am i just lucky to have a good setup? Please tell me, im interested!

Maaan, I really want to get into PCVR for those sweet, sweet mods but this is what keeps me away. I don't want to have to learn C++ just to play a game. Is it simply not possible to make a program where the user puts in their preferred settings and the app automatically adjusts settings to get as close as possible? That seems like it would be easy to do but then again, I know NOTHING about programming. If it was easy, I'm sure someone would have done it by now. Sigh.

SSW no longer causes shimmering in games. The recommendation to disable it is incorrect. By making this incorrect recommendation, you are misleading people into losing half the fps they could otherwise achieve. Having a second dedicated router is also an incorrect recommendation. Running two separate WiFi networks is a recipe for RFI. Instead, optimizing a single WiFi network is the best way to ensure optimal network performance.
@MacInVR
@MacInVR 10 күн бұрын
The developer Guy Godin recommends using a dedicated router. It is well known within the community that this is the best option to optimise VD. SSW is a personal choice, and it absolutely does not work with all games. I've recently tried SSW with EA WRC & Contractors Showdown, it made the experience worse. Yes, in the right circumstances, SSW is a great tool but that's all it is, a tool.
@RolandDobbins
@RolandDobbins 10 күн бұрын
@@MacInVR - Guy Goodin & anyone else who recommends a separate dedicated wireless AP/router for PCVR is wrong. They make this recommendation because a) they aren’t network specialists themselves, b) most people are unwilling to expend any effort to learn enough about optimizing WiFi to do this correctly, & c) aren’t willing to spend the money to replace their existing WiFi network, if required. Unfortunately, this leads to problems; most of the horror stories one reads about people who tried PCVR but had bad experiences can be traced to poor WiFi network configuration & performance. What’s cheapest & easiest often isn’t best.

Mac's recommendation (imo) to not use SSW and adjust your settings accordingly for the best experience is the way to go. If it's incorrect then I am also 'misleading' people as I always suggest turning it off as it causes me to see shimmering in many games and also frame stutters (which I don't get when it is switched off). Mac also states in the video "These are MY best settings, Use these as a base, and work out what's best for you" Everyone has differing set ups and will all have different results.
