@@ArmedNerd1988 Well, you need a background check done. You first need to obtain a non-restricted (rifles, shotguns) license course, pass the mental and physical tests, then you have to apply for a restricted (handguns, revolvers) license pal course, pass both tests. Then you have the paperwork to obtain both licenses. The rules are still very strict, If you already owned a handgun before the ban you still are allowed to own it, if you try and get one now after the ban it becomes a lot harder, but where I am an armed guard I have conditions that I can still try and obtain a handgun if I wanted.

When I did my ride along I found it interesting the two categories of people when they saw a police car. They either slammed on the brakes and started driving A lot slower, then you have the people that apparently didn't care if they got stopped! Someone actually ran a stop sign, to cut us off, and their sticker expired the year before!

I have been considering a career in law enforcement and have some questions. 1. I am attending college first for a criminal justice degree. I have heard mixed things about this. Some say it is useful, some say I should pursue a different degree as a backup plan. What do you think? 2. Does your salary allow you to live comfortable? I am in no way trying to become rich, but I do not want to worry about paying bills and feeding myself. Are you able to live without stress? 3. Do you police in a city, suburban, or rural area? I have been looking all over and am not sure which locations I would enjoy the most. From what I’ve heard each area has a different experience for policing. 4. How does being an officer affect your social life? 5. How does specialization work? I have always wanted to become a detective 6. Do you enjoy your job? What pros and cons do you have? 7. What do you recommend for training for the academy? I have been doing weight training and running 2 miles everyday. Sorry if this is too much but I have been contacting people and researching as much as possible
@justapatrolman42462 жыл бұрын
I would say choose a different degree. CJ is very overrated. Or if you know you want to be a cop, just skip the degree entirely and save a lot of money. If you’re single with no kids, and you don’t have a lot of debts you’ll live quite comfortably. If you’re supporting a family and your spouse doesn’t work, then you’ll have a hard time without working overtime. I have several coworkers that support families, and they’re usually working off duty gigs. I work in a city. Each area and each agency is different. If you like being busy and don’t mind taking calls and writing multiple reports in a shift, then city is for you. I find that the shift goes faster when I’m busy, and I like taking calls for service. A lot of sheriffs deputies I know take anywhere between one and four calls in their twelve hour shift. As for your social life, if you work twelve hour shifts, then you’ll likely work my schedule. That means you get every other weekend off, and you’re off a total of half the days in a year. There is plenty of time to be social. You’ll always have friends asking you legal questions though. Usually, specializations are offered to the entire patrol division as spots come open. Anyone who is interested can sign up. There could be tests or interviews or practical skill trials depending on the position. The only specialization I have currently is the SWAT team. Otherwise I’m just a patrolman😏. I love my job. It’s different every day, I get to work alone (I’m an introvert), there is adrenaline, you feel like you’re making a difference at times, you get a true brotherhood of people who are the only other ones to share your particular experiences. There is plenty of overtime (at least at my department) if you want or need it. These are just a few of the pros. As for cons, you’re far more likely to get into a car accident, you’re going to fight, you’re going to be wet for entire shifts, you’re going to be out in the cold or heat, you may not get to eat, you may not get to pee, you don’t make great money, you’re going to see things that will haunt you. You’re going to be scared. You’re going to see people at the worst times of their lives. You have eyes on you all the time. people expect more and better from you than everyone else on the planet. You’ll be loved by some and utterly hated by others simply for going to work. You’ll miss some family events. There are as many cons as there are pros, if not more cons. This job is a calling. If you’re not genuinely called to do it, then it may not be for you. And that’s completely ok. I think you will be fine in the academy. Start doing some aerobic and circuit workouts. If you can do these for an hour without throwing up, you’re far ahead of some others who will be in your class. I hope this helps
