I have 3 more weeks in the splint (tendon mallet). Dr. checked today, it's improving and not as bent. Really appreciative of this channel and your insight into the mental side of hand pain.

This is very informative. Got a mallet injury on my right ring finger from sports 3 days ago. Got some xrays and established it is a tendonous mallet. Everything you said here explains why my finger is splinted the way it is. Slight hyper extension on DIP and slight flextion on PIP. Good content! Your videos will be my guide for the next 6-8 weeks. A hand doctor told me nothing could be done because it had turned into arthritis, and he could lock it so it wouldn’t wiggle and hurt. I felt oddly shocked. He said nothing would help it. It isn’t hanging, it’s just sort og angled wrong and is swollen looking. It’s from typing on an iPad! So mad at myself. He didn’t xray it. I can straighten it with other fingers. It’s not hanging down, just points down and off center a bit. Makes me feel dumb for typing with it.

Hi Michelle! I just had a tendinous mallet finger injury like this, but my finger was only drooping 15 or so degrees prior to splinting, much less severe than some I have seen pictures of. Immediately after splint removal, I am not seeing drooping, but I am still having some redness and potentially minor swelling (?). Is this expected or a bad sign? I am a lifelong pianist, so I'm very concerned with full and normal use of the finger. For context, my skin was very irritated by the splint/tape for the duration of splinting, which i suspect to be the source of the redness and tenderness.

Thank you! Very clear explanation, I sent it to my daughters because I am kinda bad at explaining my injury. I wanted to ask you about next steps if a tendinous mallet finger simply doesn't want to reattach. I wore my splint religiously, 24/7 for 6 weeks, and when I went for the follow-up it hadn't healed back onto the bone. I was re-splinted for ANOTHER four weeks. Needless to say, I'm getting very tired of this. (It's the middle finger of my dominant hand, so it really does affect almost everything I do.) I'd like to ask what options I may have if, when I go back, the tendon still hasn't reattached to the bone. Thanks again!

I suffered 2 mallet fractures on my right hand last summer. I kept splints on religiously for over 12 weeks as instructed but they still dropped immediately after removing the splints. Now 7 months on, they are still incredibly painful. Hospital have discharged me but I’m finding it unbearable at times. How long will the pain go on for? It’s like needles being poked into my top joints.

My issue that I had surgery because of my tip being amputated. I still have some nail and I had to suggest to my surgeon that I have a mallet finger, and he agreed. It's a tendon one but it's been about 3 months and I can barely make it straight. I don't see it healing since it needs to be curved up. Looks like it will require surgery, again. I recently just passed my 10 year anniversary of having this injury. Happened to my right ring finger while throwing a football around with a friend. I went up to catch the ball and it dinged me straight into my finger tip. POP! Let me tell you, the healing for this injury sucked!!!!!!! I had to wear a splint for about 6 weeks. It was also my dominant hand so I had to pretty much retrain myself doing things with my other hand. In that time, I had horrible skin chaffing from not being able to wash the area. After it healed, it took about 2-3 months of physical therapy to finally get the feeling and movement back. Side note I also had no health insurance at the time and ended up paying about $3k in hospital bills. I was also in the middle of looking for a job and it was hamulating going to job interviews with a busted finger. It was a horrible few months.

I had a bony mallet. Sept 13, 2023. No Dr knew exactly what to do around here. I couldn’t wear that tape on top like that. It was sore on top like a sharp sliver. I got X-rays 3 times in 8 weeks. I kept my own splint on 24/7. My bone healed Dr said. Now he said don’t wear it anymore. So I use it doing crafts, doing dishes and yardwork and scrubbing until it hurts and then I quit doing that. Sometimes I felt it was comfortable for two hours at a time. I have no swan neck. I customized my own splint because no one around here in Flint, Michigan had a CUSTOM SPLINT like the Dr said I need. I’m angry over this. Dr said it’s 10% lagged and won’t get normal. I’m so upset….

I have heard there is a video like this out there. It does not make sense how that could possibly work. A mallet finger is either bony- meaning there is a fracture or it is tendinous- meaning the tendon has pulled off the bone. I have never seen any research to back this claim.

You are not mentioning the fact that when this happens to an older person the skin does not bear up very well to the pressure of a splint over six weeks. I'm 61 and my skin got stressed after four weeks. So mallet finger still there, cant wear splint any longer and risk skin infection. I doubt I will ever be able to wear a splint long enough for it to heal. Oh well, at least I had the use of it straight all that time.

Hi all, frustrated guitarist with mallet finger here. I wonder if anyone can offer me advice? It’s been 10 weeks since my injury, it was splinted permanently for 9 weeks and the splint never slipped off/got caught weirdly or anything. Everything seemed to be going to plan. I then took the splint off and yes my finger was very still, would hardly bent at all and very swollen still. Where I am in the UK there’s has been a hacking incident with my local healthcare provider, they are not taking any bookings, meaning I can’t go to a doctor for advice. I’ve been wearing the splint only at night for the last 3 days and I have gained a small amount of mobility, but it remains very still and will only bend about 40 degrees. My 2 questions are, does mobility increase with the swelling gradually getting better? And, How long roughly can I expect to regain pain-free and swelling-free relative mobility? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Michelle. Thank you for your informative video and apologies if you've been asked loads of times about this. After 8 weeks of splinting and 2 weeks of hand exercises, the initial finger was straight but has slowly drooped to around 40 degrees. After all this time, is it worthwhile to re-splint?. My arm and hand were tied down, and I got what felt like a million freezing needles with no pause. There is no time for any numbing to take place, and then he says, "ok, take a deep breath.This is the worst part," and he stuck the freaking needle in the tip of my finger. I was screaming and crying, but no one cared and just kept on like it was completely normal. I have a pin with a yellow ball at the end of it sticking out of my finger. I'm right-handed and keep trying to do things automatically with my right hand. My finger is swollen, warmer than the other parts of my hand, and I'm in a lot of pain. I'm afraid I'm going to end up with my finger partially cut off.😢 This is in Ontario Canada ..... health system sucks hide tit

So I have mallet finger with bone fragment. Do I take my splint off and wash my finger or not? Online advices tell me to wash it daily, but my doctor and guy who put the splint on didn't say anything about washing. I am not even 2 weeks in and my splint was moved at the bottom of my finger, because I got blister there, so tapes could not stay there. Now my finger also has many tiny blisters under the skin. It is kind of painful. This is awful, but at least it is just a finger.

I was just diagnosed with Mallet finger on my left ring finger. Finger was injured 3 months ago. It's been splinted. My instructions are that I don't take it off, get it wet, bend finger tip if it does come off & return to doctor in 2 weeks. This will go on for next 3 months. Why not 4-8 weeks? If it's not completely healed & splint is removed that can lead to tiny tears. If after 3 months finger still drops it will need surgery for multiple pins to hold it in place.
@VirtualHandCare
@VirtualHandCare 2 жыл бұрын
Since your injury happen 3 months ago, that will increase your splint wearing time by a lot. The typical 6-8 weeks is for an injury that is splinted right after the injury happens. I would definitely adhere to their instructions and hope it heals well for you!

@@VirtualHandCare That's what doc said. 3 months or surgery. I did go have it looked at by walkin to initially see if it was fractured. They said no, week in splint. The mallet increased over time before I was completely unable to raise last knuckle. Then I was dealing w/retinopathy & spontaneous eye bleeding. I'm paying the price for multiple medical "stuff". But I'm pretty resilient when giving medical diagnosis & treatment. Thank you for your input.

I'm 59 , have had a splint on for 8 weeks from day one of the injury ( non fracture but snapped tendon ) and although I have been religious in keeping the splint on there have been times where the fabric tape has stretched somewhat so it has not always been in hyper extension the whole time and now I am removing it periodically ( only the last two days ) to gently exercise it back to full use ,I am finding that it is slightly staring to droop again . Nothing like when it was first snapped but I am concerned that if I carry on that it will droop even more . Do you think that my age means that it is taking longer to heal ? and do you think I should revert back to a permanent splint ( hyper extended ) for a few more weeks ? Many thanks for your help x

My doctor said 8 weeks in the splint. Now I am told, as expected at the beginning, that I am to continue keeping it in the splint throughout rehab. I take it off a few times a day to exercise it. This will go on for another month, about. Then I will wear it only at night. I don't want to get too optimistic, but I think it's starting to get a little better. I also use a putty and roll my finger/hand across it for 5 minutes, twice a day.

Hello Michelle. I was diagnosed with bony mallet finger 7 weeks ago. It's been splinted for 7 weeks and today my doctor told me to take the splint off. The finger is able to extend but there is a 5-10 degree lag. Do I need to continue to wear the splint to make it fully straight? Will night splinting help? Thank you.
@VirtualHandCare
@VirtualHandCare 2 жыл бұрын
Personally, I prefer splint weaning instead of just stopping splint wear but I know not all doctors do that. A bony mallet usually heals well and sometimes the swelling can cause a slight lag for several weeks. If you think your lag is worsening put your splint back on and go back to your doctor or therapist.

Hi, I pushed my hand down on the bed one morning to get up and heard a pop; turns out I now had what I assume was tendinous, mallet finger in the pinky. It's been 4 weeks now and I've done a decent job in having it in a splint but I'm worried because it hasn't been completely straight and should have been in a properly angled-up splint. I play guitar and the precision of that pinky tip I cherish. Should I be worried or do you recommend to just do my best of keeping it splinted straight for two more weeks?

Hi Michelle, I hope you see this. I have a question for you. I’m a 32, almost 33 year old adult male and I believe I have a mallet finger. The thing is, this is an injury that I suffered *way* back when I was a child during recess. I remember injuring my left ring finger and there was never any pain, but it never straightened out. I told me parents about this when it happened but they just dismissed it as nothing significant. I never ended up going to any doctor for this and I just kinda got used to it being this way. I have considered asking my doctor about this now but is something like this fixable after so all this time? If it is, I would consult my doctor about it but if not, I mean I’ve lived this far with my finger the way it is so it’s not like a major concern.

Hi Michelle ... I have a bony mallet finger and I wore the splint with finger in extension for 45 days ... In this period, after 23 days during the night the splint came out but as soon as I woke up I immediately put it back in its place ... The finger was however in hyperextension even without splint... Except for that time, I wore it continuously 24/7... Today I go back to do the rx after 6/7 weeks of treatment ... What do you think? may that event have compromised healing? Excuse me, one last thing... If the x-rays will tell that the fracture has healed, how should I deal with the splint?

It really depends if your finger flexed a lot through the night but the x rays will show if the fracture has enough healing. Do let your doctor know of the splint coming off.

@@VirtualHandCare My doctor is a little tough. He told me that nothing happened because I didn't force my finger. Hi Michelle, I saw an orthopedic specialist upon receiving my mallet finger injury; diagnosed as a tendinous, left middle finger. I was fitted with a custom splint in slight hyper extension, and just as you have described in all of your videos, was told to keep it totally immobilized for 8 weeks. 8 weeks to the day, back in the doctors office, and they removed the split. Initially it was straight, but as the next day progressed, it eventually drooped back down into the same position it was when first injured. It was incredibly swollen, and painful also. Traded a few texts, and photos with the specialist, and was told to return to the splint for another 4 weeks (which will be 12 weeks total). As a guitar player, it's been a frustrating experience. I'm just wondering what my overall prognosis looks like.. this seems to be healing very slowly (or not at all). Am I starting over? Did I re-injure the finger by removing the splint too early? Any info will help. Many thanks.
