Fun fact: cold laser therapy will fix any stuck fingers, tendonitis, get rid of inflammation from arthritis, etc. I swear by it and I’m so glad I tried it on day. I’m investing in an at home device as I have rheumatoid arthritis. I came to this video as my thumb is in pain and can’t make it into my chiropractor’s office for laser and waiting for my laser in the mail.

A+, thank you! A month ago I had severe trigger thumb. I almost couldn't bend it at all, and if I did, I had to use my other hand to manually unbend it with a painful POP that brought tears to my eyes. The base of my thumb was tender and painful. I went to a hand specialist who offered me a cortisone shot (I declined!) and prescribed four weeks of physical therapy 3X/week (which I can't afford, I don't have coverage for that.) I decided to do my own PT, and I found this video. I wore my thumb brace night and day, and did all these exercises 2X/day. I also added a few more, like stretching out my fingers against a rubber band, and massaging the base of my thumb. As the joint gradually improved, I would manually bend and unbend it as far as it could go without popping (a little more each week but I never forced it.) Once a day I did the exercises with my hand underwater while I was in warm epsom salt bath. As of today, I can bend and unbend my thumb without pain or catching. I have only the very slightest pop when I unbend it, so I'm still doing the exercises and being careful, but I have my range of motion back and can use my thumb normally again. I saved $1000 in physical therapy and got the same results!

Yeah, make sure to never force your thumb back into place! You can really injure it. I was taught to rub your other thumb at the base of your trigger thumb for several minutes, like your said. But Never force Your thumb if it gets stuck. Just leave it alone. Stay calm and relax. In time when you moving around doing stuff, it will release on its own and with the rubbing. Those splints are so helpful! Glad to hear tho your getting better!!🎉

These exercises WORK! It took almost 2 months, but it did work. I bought the oval 8 and a warning. You WILL lose it at some point unless you tape it to your thumb. 3 years later I'm now having trigger finger of my right pointer finger, so I'm back for more exercises and I just ordered more oval 8's because my thumb one doesn't fit my pointer.

Hi Michelle, just letting you know that this worked for me! I had determined through your video I was probably in stage two of trigger thumb on April 10th. After I had been to see a surgeon who wanted to do surgery, I found your video. I borrowed a too-large oval 8 the next day and taped it up until my correct size came in. I faithfully did your exercises and wore my brace for six weeks. During the last week I could tell the thumb was not going to trigger anymore. Now July 17th, I have been trigger free for a couple months. Only sign of anything is knuckle stiffness and it can get fatigued or "strained" when I over-use it. Thank YOU so much for helping me be proactive and heal myself without surgery!

My trigger thumb began just recently, with popping in the morning, upon awakening. NO PAIN. I could feel the pop, but not hear it., but when I asked my husband to hold the joint gently, he could feel the pop. I just told myself a few months ago, that I should get two pot holders to get things out of the oven. I now get two, but, or of course I have to reverse this pop. I will try these exercises because the pain has been present just since yesterday, and I feel this is the first stages. At 77, I rarely suffer from ANY hand issues which is very surprising to me, because my hands are constantly busy, especially with cooking. My diet has always included lots of collagen from food. That may be the only reason I have had pain free hands. Thank you for the video.

Cortisone shots and surgery were recommended and I wanted to see if there was any way to resolve this without resorting to those options. Michelle has been wonderful in providing the education and path to recovery. My fear is that even after surgery I would still be having issues or it would feel different because surgery is a permanent procedure.

I got trigger thumb from the way I hold my drawing pad. I was in agony and scared. I looked up why my thumb knuckle got so swollen and locked up to where I had to physically pop it back and that hurt soooo bad! I watched your video and did the exercises, I couldn't buy a brace, didn't have the money. So I worked hard on not bending it. After a couple of days, it felt a tiny bit better so I wanted to keep doing them while waiting for my pain doc appt. I did them exactly how you suggested for two months. It helped so much my Dr said keep doing them and see where you are in two months. Thank you so much! I can almost bend it on my own, but not quite there, the knuckle might have arthritis in it but it hardly locks up on its own now. Thank you again!

Just what I needed, thank you! I started watching this video and went looking for the Oval 8 I got for the trigger finger on middle finger of opposite hand a couple years ago. It fits, hurrah! My thumb trigger (pinky too, but it's not as bad) started immediately after I had endoscopic carpal tunnel release surgery on my left hand, now 4 weeks ago. I wasn't shocked because I had read that this can happen. The info said they don't understand the association! Anyway, I figure your trigger finger exercises and stretches are just what I need. My cousin (an M.D.) said that surgery can fix trigger finger, but I am hoping to fix these the "conservative" way.

Although my situation is not extreme, I found this video because I am having steadily increasing pain and uselessness in my thumb --something I didn't know happens. As I followed the video instructions, I felt tingling up into my elbow sort of the same as when I workout an unused muscle. I will keep up with this and hopefully see a decrease in pain over time. I have done other hand exercises for mouse hand to stay ahead of it but I guess I never considered the thumb would need a workout too. I wonder what other body parts will announce themselves in need of tlc as I age. Bring it on. Thanks for creating this video it was easy to understand and follow. ❤

I woke up to a pain in my thumb 2 weeks ago. I thought it would pass. I didn’t even know such a condition existed! I had to Google it and was shocked! I don’t like doctors and to be honest the state of the healthcare system in the UK I’ll be lucky to get seen! I’m trying these exercises. Already feel relief after doing this the once! Thank you 😊 I hope this thing corrects over time 🙏🏽 Update: 3 weeks in of doing all of these I am getting better. My finger isn’t locking but I am still doing the exercises as a caution. Thank you ❤

Im going to start doing these exercises. My thumb is locking since I started going to the gym. It's very painful in the mornings when I wake up. It gets better, almost lock free for some time during the day. But it comes back next day.

Thank you soo much ♡, i got it after i got an injection on my right hand and my hand was covered with a tight cloth for like 1 to 3 days(when i was 5 to 7 and im now 13), thats how it ended up getting it , im really used to it but i hope it goes back to normal , i tried to unbend my thumb but it becomes straight and cant move backwards like a normal finger, and it makes a sound when i bend it back, but it works like a normal thumb, just bent, i was hoping it would become normal in a few days but i still have it (it could be the reason why i remember always writing slower than my classmates) and....☆Thank you sooooo much for this video!!!☆

I am AMAZED! I started having “clicking” of my left thumb 3 months ago. (Luckily I’m right-hand dominant) This progressed to the point where I have been unable to bend my thumb within the last month without clicking hard and pain…and literally looking at my thumb and telling my brain to bend it…very hard to do! (I’m sure others may understand this) If I use my other hand to bend the top joint of my thumb, no problem or pain. So basically, my thumb is kind of stuck in a straight position. I swear on my life that I only did your instructions once…and only following the video, not even doing the reps you suggested (yet!) and I can ALREADY bend my thumb without pain or brain hesitation! I’m blown away! (But I need to stop bending it like crazy in excitement & let it rest!) I do have another question…and maybe you have another video addressing this? …I have dealt with carpal tunnel issues for many years, especially in my dominant right hand -comes/goes-I wear a full night brace now that has been a game changer but this past summer I also developed numbness in my left thumb tip and middle finger tip that is consistent 24/7. Any suggestions for this? Thank u so much!

Thank you soooo much for this great video! I've been suffering for a few months with trigger thumb and finally saw a hand specialist a few weeks ago who recommended an Nsaid gel. This provided little relief and I wanted to try some sort of PT before getting an injection or surgery. After doing your exercises just once, my pain and stiffness went away. My oval 8 splint arrived today, so I'm going to continue with your advise to do these exercises a few times a day and wear the splint for the next 4-6 weeks. Great job!

Hi! Thank you for your incredibly helpful videos. I recently was diagnosed with grade 2 trigger thumb and received a cortisone injection 7 weeks ago. Unfortunately, unlike the completely successful injection I had for a grade 2 trigger finger about 10 years ago, this one made no difference at all. On the day I got the injection, I asked the office OT (who makes custom splints and runs people through their post hand surgery paces) if she could suggest any exercises; she handed me a few printed pages with general exercises for hand stretches. My orthopedic doc jumps to surgery pretty quickly, and I'd like to delay or even avoid that if possible. For the next 6 weeks, I am going to religiously follow your suggested exercises and wear an Oval 8 splint. Can/should I wear the splint at night? My brain says "absolutely!" but I figure I ought to check with the one who actually knows! Thanks again for your wonderful KZbin channel.

Ok so I'm pretty amazed right now I literally did all the exercises while first seeing this video and these work! I recently got the trigger thumb like a month now and it's been scary, annoying and painful so yeah when I'm not a work I don't straighten it and it hurts less, but as she even said now when I need it straight sometimes to grasp things at work it pops and hurts more. So to everyone out there my pain level and fixation is a #2 on her scale and so I'm not to bad off also the #3 exercise is a huge winner for me also immediately after doing like 10 slow reps of it my thumb could straighten without pain slowly and that's a huge improvement I hate being injured or feeling worn out. Thanks a ton for this video now I do need to obtain that thumb brace though so good luck to all others with this issue👍

Great easy to understand exercises. I have been on crutches for almost 32 years. My hand hurt last week so I squeezed it , the thumb, it popped and now it is triggering mostly in am and at night. It seems to be better in day time so I'm hoping exercises and oval 8 are my answer. I may add CBD in for inflammation. I have heard great things about it working for inflammation. Thank you for !!!!

Over the past few days while exercising noticed my thumb is functioning. I am still taking care using splint and exercising so how do I transition from the splints?

Thumb is totally locked up when i wake up,after an hour or so of activity i can loosen it up without pain. The exercises help but it seems to keep coming back.I have the surgery scheduled but wish that i did not have to do this because of the recovery time as i use my hands everyday in my job, but i see no other long term alternative for it. It still pops with #1- when you lay your hand flat and slide toward your index? I would try just the first part of the exercise then, where you lift your thumb up but don't slide in, you could also do this particular exercise with the Oval 8 on.

I found these oval 8before seeing this video. It has worked wonderful. My only tip is secure the oval 8 with a band aid because they have a tendency to fall off since they are so comfortable during daily routine and it gets forgotten easily.

I was recently diagnosed with a trigger thumb on my right hand. I had a traumatic hand injury to my right thumb in my teens. I took a line drive ball to the thumb and have had issues with pain and mobility ever since. Generally, I could mitigate those symptoms by "cracking" the thumb by pulling deeply into the joint to relieve the build-up of gases. However, over the last few months, that has not helped. In fact, I have begun to experience locking, clicking, and stilted movements of the thumb, especially when mousing or using my phone. I am ambidextrous, but I use my right hand a lot while working from home (I'm in Ed Tech) and mouse with my right hand. I have purchased a set of Oval-8 braces, but the anatomy of my thumb is significantly different from yours. I am very short, and my thumb is also very short. The oval 8 seems too long. When I attempt to do the exercises (specifically #2 & #3), I cannot duplicate your movements well, as my second joint has no space between the base of the hand and the joint itself. Do you know if there are any modifications I can implement to achieve the results you describe?

Hey Michelle,Sam here from India,I am a 55 year male and have been body building continuously for the last 35 years, recently I was diagnosed with trigger thumb on my right hand and I was told to be off weights till such time I recovered by medication and by physiotherapy. The right thumb recovered completely and it shifted to my left thumb where it has stayed now for almost 1 month.I am in stage 1 or maybe 2 because I can do all my weights and daily chores without any perceptible pain.Only when I accidentally bend my thumb backwards or when I am doing a routine chore I feel the pain/snapping and discomfort. My question is do I go totally of weights or any exercise that puts some pressure on my thumb or can I continue exercising and heal by doing the wonderful exercises that your video shows?Thank you once again for the amazing video which I am sure has helped many people like me.Keep doing the good work.
