Cracked me up last winter when someone filmed a group of people all wearing masks at a bus stop - somewhere up north. You could see the steam from their breath wafting all over each other. Fauchi said the virus is spread though moisturized air from people exhaling. Oh well.
@ScienceSupersedesFaith3 жыл бұрын
There is a difference between droplets which carry the viruses and gaseous water (aka vapor) that condenses outside the mask. The droplets are held back quite effectively, the water vapor passes the mask. But since vapor does not carry viruses, there is no problem.

the problem with your presentation with surgical mask presentation is that could give a wrong impression that it can really filter, as you done it on 1D model, when it suppose to be a least in 2D. you did not show the cross section. as you also have to show the distance between the 3 layers which presented in 3 layers of gray, which have more distance in between.
@raymondglad55933 жыл бұрын
Ok lets think common sense. You can see the fibres of a mask under a normal microscope. You need an electron microscope to see a virus. In this animation the virus is bigger than the size of the fibre. I'm afraid the virus can get thru a mask much easier than its portrayed.

To all buttheads: Yes, viruses are smaller than pores in a mask. But no, that does not mean that masks are pointless, because viruses do not travel on their own, but they come in water droplets which you exhale. And these droplets are way bigger than the pores and they are held back quite significantly, thus reducing the amout of viruses being spread. Edit: And to preempt an often heard argument: Water droplets are not the same as water vapor, which passes through the mask and which you might see condensing outside. Vapor does not carry viruses, because vapor consists of water molecules which are way smaller than any virus.
