The more history you know, the funnier it is. A lot of things in the film that seem merely absurd or inexplicable are actually based on historical realities of the Middle Ages. And the film was very much of its time, a time when people were well-read enough to recognize a lot of the historical allusions and before public education had come under attack so people got more of the jokes.

@@colibri1 I've heard that "Your mother was a hamster, and your father smelt of elderberries" is actually a real insult. As I understand it, Hamsters are notoriously fast-breeding rodents, and Elderberries can be made into wine. So he's implying his mother was a whore, and his father a drunk.

I used to laugh so hard as a kid when the the French guy says, "You're mother was a hamster! And your father smelt of elderberries!" It wasn't till I was an adult that I realized that they were referring to the fact that hamsters are famous for the amount of procreation they do, and that wine was made from elderberries. I said that line to so many kids on the playground without realizing that I was calling their mother a whore, and their father a drunk.

Men can dismount horses rather easily, and perhaps the horse is tied up in the woods, while they DID get the attacker? He may have even sold it to the local peasants to further distance himself from the attack. If you'll notice the horseman's helmet, it's not like any of the Python players, but the grunt knights, quite a few of them have the same helmet. The opening in the helmet, for the eyes and mouth, are shaped like a cross.

My favourite visual sketch is Sir Lancelot (Cleese) running at the castle. I remember seeing this at the cinema when it was released. The whole concept of an extended MP narrative instead of quick sketches was jaw-dropping. Among my favourite films of all time.

Python's humor is absurd, surreal, silly and oddly brilliant. The more you know about the King Arthur story the times and the characters, the more amazing it is. Many of us grew up watching their TV show in the early 70s. Soon, we were all imitating their accents and skits, turning everyday events into the depraved. When they quit doing the show we thrived on reruns. Then they put out this movie. We were already acclimatized so it was slipping into a warm comfortable tub. The theater was packed when I saw it in '75. Nearly everyone there was around my age and the laughter was frequent and loud.
@ystrw

And the greatest thing about Monty Python's Flying Circus is that, as John Cleese admitted, when the crew pitched it to the producers, they hadn't the slightest idea what they were actually going to do with the tv slot. It was all kinda 'make it up as you go along', and anyone else probably would've made a frantic disaster of it. But these were the creative minds of Eric Idle, Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gillam, Terry Jones and Michael Palin. And when you put them together, you got this mix of crazy and brilliant, ludicrous and genius. And naughty. Very naughty. I got to see the Broadway version of Grail, Spamalot, a few...ok, more than a few... years back. 'God' was voiced by a recorded John Cleese, and though he wasn't actually there, his voice got a standing o after it was over. The Pythons and Holy Grail are as iconic in its own way as Queen and Bohemian Rhapsody is in theirs.

@@WolfHreda Well, "better" is subjective (I happen to agree with you, but that's just my opinion), but it is certainly a more _traditional_ movie with more of a continuous story and plot, rather than a string of mostly independent sketches loosely tied together by a common theme and characters. "bring out your dead" Was shouted each night during the plague in London, and probably other cities as well. People who had died that day had to be buried in open pits (called plague pits) because there we so many of them, and people had go round collecting that day's dead people to be carted off to the plague pits. So people would go round with carts shouting 'Bring out your dead" and people who were lockdown due to plague had to open their doors and hand over their dead relatives. We had an old plague pit near us. It had been converted into a park because no one wanted to dig foundations for houses on it. Plagues were quite common in Europe at that period. One third of the population of Europe died in the Black Death, due to bubonic plague. And bubonic plague kept coming back. Lockdowns were very severe, people had their doors nailed shut and red crosses painted on the door on them if they had a case of plague in the house. I'm not sure how they managed to bring out their dead if their doors had been nailed shut. Maybe they threw them out the windows. "bring out your dead" is a phrase most English people will know, but it needs explanation for non-English people

Something I always love about this film that no one ever seems to get is the depiction of the flagellants (the monks who were hitting themselves with their books). During times of turmoil, there were people who were convinced that the plague or famine or war was divine punishment, so they whipped themselves through the streets in an attempt to atone for their sin and inspire the population to repent. I also love the dirty drawings in the margins of each chapter of the film: this was absolutely a practice of those horny little monks as well.

My friend's dad was a Sears tv/stereo salesman back around 1977. As a perk, he got a big Sears TV with a built-in custom video tape recorder/player. They included a tape of the Grail in the bundle. So we got to watch the movie. We rewound the scene with the new name of the Knights of Ni about 30 times to get the new name straight. You need to understand it was revolutionary to be able to rewind a movie. This was before VHS and Beta VCRs came out. You couldn't rewind TV. You might record an 8mm film, have it developed and then play it at home on a reel-to-reel projector and then rewind, but not TV! "We are now the knights who say echy, echy, echy, echy FU-tang ZU-boing gahzaaangz ... Ni!" delivered by the magic of brand new modern technology. There were some disagreements about some of the syllables, but hey, that's life.

He also plays Patsy, Arthur's "horse" and the Soothsayer, among others Eric Idle is Brave Sir Robin, sweet Concorde, and of course, Roger the Shrubber.

So the entire joke about the shrubbery was always just like this throwaway joke to me because I didn't get it as anything more than just this weird, bizarre conceit... until I went to University in the UK, and all the Brit kids around me were laughing hysterically at that part, and I didn't understand what was so damn funny, so I finally asked them what was so amusing... and that's when I finally got the joke. It's a joke that doesn't cross the ocean well. So I always explain it to everybody who is from the US and doesn't understand. So essentially, it all hangs on a bit of 70s slang. In essence the joke revolves around: a shrubbery is a bush, and a bush is a prostitute. So these guys are out in the woods by themselves for years, and they really want to have a girl to diddle... and so they asked them to bring them a prostitute. So when they get to town and there's a guy who "arranges and tastefully decorates shrubberies", and he's has his hair done just so & has a cart and all that, and he comes driving up looking fancy, and his name is Roger the Shrubber... To roger someone means to screw them; you "roger them"... & he sells shrubberies AKA bushes AKA prostitutes... so essentially they are saying so his name is "F*cker, The Pimp". And then they bring an actual shrubbery to the knights in the woods, and the knights are like, "you're not understanding what we're trying to get from you. Yes this is very nice but this is not what we were asking for, so go get us another one, and get it right this time." That is the joke that is actually hilarious, because the movie is full of sex jokes, but as noble knights of the Round Table (& possibly also a bit dim / in the meathead category), those guys aren't supposed to know about stuff like that because they are too pure, so they missed the point. You are now enlightened, LOL

I really enjoyed your reaction. Especially your English and Scots accents. The film was a risk. Monty Python had only worked in the short sketch format: They couldn’t get financial backing. The film was shot on location in Britain. The weather was appalling. When not on set cast and crew had to wait around for hours in the cold and wet. It was not a happy experience and the atmosphere on location was tense. But the film turned out to an enormous hit. I’m 63. I went to see MP live at Drury Lane. Absolutely brilliant. John Cleese tends to get most plaudits. He left because he thought the creative originality had gone and they just rejigging the same idea (eg. the brilliant Cheese Shop sketch was redone as a sketch about a library). IMHO they were equally important. Arguably Michael Palin has been the most successful. Again great reaction. Subscribed.

You have to read the credits' subtitles. LOL Also, watch for the rampant but subtle cat abuse - they step on one during the dance at Camelot, the old woman they say "ni" to is beating a carpet with one, etc.

I've watched so many young people react to this movie and a lot, lot, lot of them are really bothered that they don't get the grail; some actually get angry about it. This reaction is really strange to me, and I think part of it is that young people for about three decades have been raised playing electronic games where everything is goal-focused and they end up expecting goal-fulfillment in films. Anyway, just the thoughts of someone who was alive when this film was released.

Interesting thought but I don't think it's that deep. Also not everyone enjoys electronic games. I think it has to do with the title of the movie and the initial quest for the grail in the first place. Without the theory of "video games shaping the youth" as the reason, the majority of cinema we watch usually shows the main character or group completing their mission after a bit of adversity. Of course we're going to mention the fact that they never get the grail because it's totally unexpected. A twist no one sees coming & me personally I think it's hilarious. For someone to get angry over that is silliness to me lol Thanks for watching! Have a good one!

I think the people who don't like the ending haven't ever watched the TV series. Monty Python literally tore up the rule-book with the way they created their shows. Sketches just ended without a punchline, or segued into an entirely different sketch, or would get interrupted by an animation. So to have the cast arrested and the film just stop unexpectedly is *exactly* the sort of thing Monty Python would do - the one thing they definitely WOULDN'T do is a Normal, Hollywood-style happy ending!

Mpnty Python's Flying Circus is made up of 5 men who play a wide variety of characters throughout the TV show episodes, stage shows and movies. They are all making multiple appearances throughout this movie. They even play women. They are brilliant.

Six men- John Cleese, Eric Idle, Graham Chapman, Terry Jones, Michael Palin, and Terry Gilliam. Gilliam, the only American in the group, is often overlooked because he mainly provided the animation. However, he did appear as characters at times. In Holy Grail, he played Patsy (coconut man) and the bridgekeeper, among other roles.

Not sure if someone has said this. But the bit with the monks banging their heads with bibles are a gag reference to 'Bible Bashers'. Bible Bashers are what we in the UK call Christians who a known for being very forceful in imposing their religious views on to people.

You ask why those monks are banging a piece of wood against their heads? Two ways to interpret that One way is - "because it comes across silly and totally random and it is simply just a cheap achieved laugh"...and it works totally fine for just achieving that. But all members of Monty Phyton actually do have a Phd as like for history, for arts and what not so it can´t be just that random...and it actually isn´t. It is a joke about religious fanatics who don´t understand the real meaning of the word of god therefore are interpreting it false and who are taking that false interpretation then literally. And that happened and happens all the time during history when it comes to religious fanatics of all kind.. That´s actually sophisticated, and not random at all, isn´t it Now to the Joke. The Monks are praying "Pie Iesu dominae, dona eis requiem" which is Latin meaning proper translated "Mercyful Lord Jesus, grant them rest" (actually a traditional Latin funeral rite chant) Basically those Monks interpreted "grant them rest" totally out of context from being dead and therefore wrong as like as it has the meaning "grant them a break" and additionally they took then "a break" literally and that´s why they are trying to break that piece of wood with their heads in order to suffer because that hurts - (disclaimer: to suffer is a deeply religious act for christian religious fanatics especially for fanatic catholics in the medi eval time period because Jesus suffered as well) - while repeating that chant in the false sense of "Meryful Lord Jesus grant them a break" over and over again in order to get blessed when that piece of wood finally breaks but which doesn´t happem... Actually there are a bunch of such hidden "easter eggs/deeper meanings" in their jokes during the whole movie....as like for instance "Lancelot´s massacre at that wedding" is also not "just random" because in the Arthur Saga Lancelot is exactly described like that, as a knight who got "souled with God´s holy rage" during battles and fights against the heathen Saxons (which today means would it be a modern psycholigical assassment = that during battles he always totally blacked out and then run amok), which is the reason why he was the bravest of all knights of the round table.
