Madurai is famous for its rich heritage, Temples and food. This video is about our “A Day in Madurai” in which we explored the - Alagar Temple, Famous food joints of Madurai and Madurai Market.

Breakfast near Teppakulam - We started our day in the morning by having breakfast at the “Sree Sabrees Hotel” near Teppakulam. We had mini tiffin in the breakfast.
Mini Tiffin Cost - Rs 100
Overall I like the restaurant it was neat and clean and had good food.
Teppakulam - After breakfast, we visited Mariamman Teppakulam. It’s a beautiful square tank which was built in 1645 A.D by Madurai king - Thirumalai Nayak. The Length of this tank is approximately 300 meters.
We also noticed there is a Shiva Temple in the middle of the Square Tank.
Alagar Kovil Temple - After travelling 28 km from the Teppakulam we reached Alagar Kovil Temple - This temple is dedicated to Lord Alagar (Vishnu ji). The temple is renowned for its stunning architecture and serene surroundings.
This Temple was constructed by the Pandya Rulers 1300 years back in the 13th Century.
We met a regular devotee of this temple Mr. Satyanarayan Ji who also briefed us more about the temple and its history.
We also attended the Cultural program inside the temple. Every year, this program takes place here from 17 December to 14 January.
Temple Timings - 6:00 am - 12:00 pm
4:00 pm - 7:30 pm
Lunch at Madurai - After this, we had our lunch at Shri Ram Mess, Madurai at Kaka Thoppu Street. For lunch, we had the traditional South Indian thali.
Food cost - Rs 170 per Thali
Vellai Appam near Temple - After lunch we walked for 10 minutes and reached Gopu Iyengars Tiffin Center near the Meenakshi Temple. This is a 93-year-old famous eatery. We had a famous Vellai Appam & Carrot Halwa.
Vellai Appam cost - Rs 15 per piece
Carrot Halwa - Rs 28
Street Food (Thennai Kuruthu) - Then we tasted a street food of Madurai called Thennai Kuruthu It’s basically an inner part of the Coconut trunk.
Coffee at Tallakulam - After this we travelled 2 km and had coffee at New Visalam Coffee bar at Tallakulam.
Coffee Cost - Rs 25
Madurai Market - After this we reached near the temple and we explored the market of Madurai. We have seen a lot of jewellery shops there someone told me that here in Madurai Market you can find approx. 2000 jewellery shop.
After this, we ended our day

People are so involved in their culture and proudly describe the stories behind these monuments, that generations need to learn how to protect, praise, and learn from the ancient mythological stories. Pandyas were mentioned in mahabharata, making them one of the oldest and longest ruling dynasties in the whole world. Brahma had wish to wash lord vishnu feet this happened when lord vishnu took trivikrama form during vamana avatar, when lord vishnu placed his feet on satya loka to measure worlds, brahma washed lord vishnu feet, the water which touched the noopuram of lord vishnu fell on rishabadri parvatam(alagar hills) and formed a stream called noopura ganga. This is one of the important information regarding alagar temple. One of the temples people doesn't know is thirumohur, which is believed to be birth place of mohini avatar. There are two alagar temples they are koodal alagar and kalalagar temple( temple in this video). During meenakshi marriage koodal alagar performs marriage, while kalalagar comes to madurai border i.e. vaigai river and returns to his place as marriage is already happened.

On the top of the hills beside Azhagar temple, you can find divine waters is Noopura Gangai. It is considered to be a drop that spilled over the hills when Brahmaji did Paad Abhishek of Bhagwan Vishnu from his Kamandalu when Bhagwan Vishnu took the Vaaman avatar. The drop fell after touching the Noopura (payal) of lord Vishnu.

I visited Madurai for the first time on Diwali in 1977. That time we had darshan at Alagar kovil as well as Mariamman Teppakulam. I don't remember which of these two places we visited had a pond where we could immerse our feet in the pond and get a fish pedicure. Even after this long time I remember it. I have been to Madurai again a few more times, but never again visited the other two places. But I am planning a trip next January when the climate is reasonably better. All these temples (kovils) now appear very different to what I could recollect from my first visit. I have seen many vlogs but rarely these places are visited and recorded.

Harish sir, there was another popular temple just 3km from Alagar Sundaraja perumal temple called Pazhamudircholai Murugan temple on top of the hill behind inside Alagar kovil forest. Another 0.5km further there is another Amman temple which one should climb few stairs where there is holy water that flows and people take bath there.

You missed visiting Nupur Ganga Temple Which is on Top Of This Alagar Kovil Mountain, There is a Presiding Deity in the sanctum sanatorium where water coming from an unknown source flows below her feet. There are separate bathing areas also from the same water source. While coming down after Taking Darshan people stop at Murugan Temple midway on the hill and them come down to Alagar Temple. That's how the journey stands completed.

Azhagar kovil has a famous perennial fresh water stream called as Nupura gangai. It is said that when Lord brahma welcomed Azhagar on these hills, he poured Ganga Jal on the lord's feet. The water of Ganga touched the nupur (anklets) of the lord and started flowing as a stream, hence it is known as Nupura Ganga. The famous temple prasad in Azhagar Koil is Dosa. It is not like your regular dosa, it is made as a thick dosa with pepper and jeera. It can be stored for few days and eaten. There is another temple called Pazhamudir Cholai (Fruit Orchard) in the same mountain range of Azhagar Kovil, it is a famous Murugan Temple. It is one of the Arupadai Veedu of Lord Murugan. Lord muruga has 6 famous temples in Tamilnadu called Padai veedu (Padai veedu means army camp, since murugan is a god of war he defeated Surapadman). There are 2 padai veedus near Madurai, Thiruparankundram and Pazhamudir Cholai.

You only shows Hindu Temples which is good. But at least show some Christian Churches n Holy Places which I think India has MANY OR You don't like them?

​@@edwardfernandes6166 Most churches look the same. Hindu temples have such architecture that will floor you even if you're not religious. And Harish ji is a Hindu, so he'll obviously prefer going to temples. Tamil Nadu is a deeply religious land, and the temples there command awe and devotion. Let's not pick small religious bones in such wonderful vlogs.
