Not sure why anyone would just stop watching a photographer because they shoot on film. A camera is a tool; it doesn’t matter if it is film or digital. Film slows you down and allows us to see the thought process. I love Tom’s work. I follow several UK photographers.

How annoying and how very sad that the carping of a handful of narrow minded and utterly self centred bigots actually made Thomas consider not using or posting videos involving film. If they aren’t interested in the process or craft of photography whether film, digital, post processing, darkroom etc. why are they watching in the first place? They might as well just load up and gawp moronically at wallpaper.

Mr.Heaton. Re: Shooting film vs digital and making a KZbin video based on film based images. I feel your pain. Why should it make the slightest bit of difference which you use? The creative process of capturing an image IS the same. Why not try this suggestion on for size? Shoot some film images; put up a video of the story behind these images and not reveal whether they were shot on film or digitally. (Do not even show the camera you are using on the video). And I'll bet you dollars-to-donuts, 95% of your viewers will not be able to tell the difference. That's because there is no real difference. Your detractors will kick and scream. But that is OK. They will have identified themselves and you can dump them. Go with your heart and keep up the great work, regardless of your chosen format.

First, wish You all the best recovery, get well and get out again soon. Secondly, thanks for a very nice video, and also a big thanks to Thomas for opening up about how it feels being a popular KZbin (er). I love both of Your channels, have learn a lot from both of You since I started photographing in February this year. Not sure if You agree about the rule stuff in photographing, rule of third and so on, but as long as photographing is enjoyable, I can't see if it's matter at all. I have picked up my old Canon AV-1 and sniffing in to film again, a big thanks to Thomas for that. I love seeing him struggle , just as I do with the exposure and shutter peed. He has my support in shooting film and sharing it in his videos. It shows the basic of photographing, skills we all need to understand this wonderful art. And also a big thanks to You Allister for opening up my eyes for "non rule" photographing, not sure if my images has got better, but I now love going out and look for composition, finding images more outside the box. Still struggle with acceptance from the "old school" type of guys, but that doesn't bothers me at all, any more. I have become the master of my own thoughts, I shoot whatever I find pleasing, not what other tells me to shoot. I'm gonna enjoy these three episodes very much. Wish You both all the best, both with health and with photographing.

Why on earth would anybody be pissed off about Thomas shooting film? Same subject, same craftsman, just slightly different medium! Cockwombles! Here in Australia’s Whitsunday Islands, we have an iconic location called Hill Inlet/ Whitehaven Beach. Everybody shoots pretty much the same angles, subject matter,etc! 🤷♂️🤔 I try and shoot the lesser known places of the region which are still beautiful, you just need to work a little bit harder to get the best images. Much more satisfying! Great interview!

Film and Digital photography can happily co-exist in the 21st century and I enjoy both methods when I am out and about with my DSLR and 35mm SLR. I love the fact that every form of photography, from the origin of our chosen art to todays super high resolution digital mirrorless camera's, is still available to indulge and immerse yourself into. I have been enjoying watching Thomas' film photography with all the highs and lows that it brings. I can relate to it and appreciate the effort put in to it. Film Photography is enjoying a renaissance as a new generation of photographers, who perhaps weren't born when Film was at it's dizzying heights towards the end of the 90's and into the new millennium, allow their curiosity to lead them on a very interesting journey with a steep learning curve. Long may it continue. Anyone wishing to give film a try can get into it quite cheaply, there are camera's on the used market that can do most of the things a DSLR can. It's just the "memory card" that is different! The advantage of film is the antici..........

Nice video. Thomas Heaton, I believe, will present on his KZbin channel, content that he determines will make and keep his channel successful. I only hope, that in his determination, he will continue to showcase content about film photography. I started photography in 1976, and needless to say, learned the craft with film. I would hope that people not interested in film photography would only forego Tom's videos featuring that format. I think Thomas Heaton's videos, are instructive, regardless of format. It would be a shame in my opinion to abandon his channel because of a dislike of film.

Sorry to hear about the inner ear problem, Alister. I get those occasionally and a day's rest usually does the trick but yours seems to be a little more serious. I've been advised to hang my head off the edge of the bed and give it a good twist to shake the crystals back into alignment. Seems risky. :-) Good on Tom, and you, for maintaining the choice of film when desired. It's easy for people to criticize others to make themselves feel important. If that person stops following Tom I am sure the thousands of other followers will take up the slack. A good photograph is a good photograph...film vs digital or Nikon vs Canon is less important than the work that made the image. Looking forward to the following episodes.

There is so much to be found when we look closer to us and when we focus on smaller portions of our beautiful world. And more chances as Thomas have found out for himself to create images that are original and our own, instead of copies of scenes that have been photographed so many others times. We are so influenced by all the imagery that we see every where that I wonder f is still possible to truly create images that are simply authentic to ourselves!? All is stored in our mind, how can we avoid letting it effect what we create? If anyone knows how please share...🙏🏼 thank you guys for the chat! That Patagonian tree is stunning! Get well soon Alister. Great video as usual. I was surprised by the comment regarding not watching Thomas because he shoot film. Having started my photography shooting film I find there is an element to it that is not part of shooting digital. it is not just the tactile aspect of film it is also the workflow. In digital shooting many shoot hundreds of images of the same thing hoping they get one or two shoots they can fix in post processing. It seems the considered approach to shooting an image and getting it right in camera is almost a lost art. It is almost akin to the old crafts that have died away because technological change makes it easier and cheaper to produce. But not always as good.

Hi Alister, this is a great conversation you are having with Thomas. I've been a big "FAN" of TH for nearly as long as he has had his channel for the very reasons you sited. The discussion of saturation of images of the same thing is a very interesting one today. I live in Australia and the amount of images of ULURU is staggering, the ones I have taken and love the most is a shot close up of a few gum trees in close to the ROCK. The viewer knows it is ULURU but it is close up and personal perspective. You would have also probably seen a multitude of images of the tree in the lake at WANAKA New Zealand. That tree has become an obsession for so many tourists and it has been damaged by foolish unthinking instagramers! One person actually vandalised the tree by cutting off one of the branches. Also in NZ, the Church of the Good Shepard - Lake Tekapo.... they have had to place a fence around the church (still functions as a church) to prevent "Tourists" predominantly from Asia, from damaging the building and chipping pieces of stone off as souvenirs and walking into the church to take photos while a church service is on!. I don't know the answer but respect for the place should be paramount, but in the world's social media herd mentality that phrase is very foreign. Sad but by doing what you and TH do by not disclosing locations will help. Nick Page is another landscape photographer who will NOT disclose his image locations (Well done). Great discussion in part #1, looking forward to #2 & #3. Cheers from Australia!

I like the local videos, many of us can only shoot local even pre-pandemic. We have the same struggle where it is just another yellow tree, how do we shoot it differently. Often from the viewer side of things so many youtube photographers overlap. When one shoots Iceland, there's probably a dozen others shooting. Although that overlap is interesting because each photographer sees and photographs the same subject differently.
@Alister_Benn3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment - I think often we put too much emphasis on the final image and have too high expectations for it. Not every shot we take is going to be life-changing, or popular. The thing I take into the field with me is the belief that the time I am engaging with that tree is valuable. The tree is valuable for our ecosystem and the awareness of that fact makes my life better. The image is a memory of that relationship.
