We have visited our friends smallholding in Wales and taken a look around their home allotment garden. They also have a Community Interest Company set up to create a community orchard across the road from their home. Join us for a look around and see what has changed since our last visit.

We begin our tour by looking at the wild flowers that have just been started outside the holiday let end of the property. From here we make our way up into the home allotment area where Will and Bridget have been very busy getting the growing season off to a great start.
We take a look around the two greenhouses and start in the heated greenhouse. In here they have plenty being started off and no space has been wasted.
The unheated greenhouse has three very large oil drums and a deep bed that are filled with sharp sand. These are used for growing parsnips and carrots to show standards. Holes are made in the sand and filled with compost to grow long and straight roots. They also have a trained nectarine tree at the end which is covered in blossom.
Outside of the greenhouses there are a selection of raised beds. They certainly have plenty of space to grow enough food for themselves and to sell at local fairs. The fencing around the outside is nearly finished and needs to be good enough to keep the chickens and geese out. Just beyond the fence are the bee hives. Will and Bridget sell the honey and make candles from these. We have sampled both plenty of times and can recommend them.
Across the road we take a look around the community interest company land and the orchard that has been planted. The orchard is through a gate opposite the main house and has already been set up with fruit and nut trees and bushes. The area has been planned with a couple of benches and an area to relax in. It already looks great and as it all grows it will only look better. A selection of trees have been chosen as the project is breaking new ground with varieties that are rarely grown at this altitude in this area so some will do better than others. They are all native varieties so I'm sure they will do well.
The views from on top of the hill are great in all directions. Then across the field a little further is an example of what they aim to create more of. The first oak forest has been planted in a corner of the top field. These will give a great habitat for wildlife as they mature. The project is also aiming to increase the depth of the hedging around the entire area. This will involve a lot of planting but the increased hedging will create a wildlife corridor which will benefit the entire area.
