The Best & Worst of Visiting Portugal
Hate #1. The Eating Times: Portuguese restaurants close their kitchens from 3PM until 7 or 8PM each day. That means if you get peckish for Porco Preto or salivating for Sardines at 5 or 6PM you are out of luck. You can get small snacks and the fast food joints are open, but the traditional fair is not available. This will really upset you traveling while you are in Portugal especially if you have kids with early bed times.
Hate#2. Paying for Bread and Olives: This is just an annoyance you may notice on paying your bill at a restaurant. The tasty looking bread, olives, BUTTER, sardine paste, cheese, ham, etc You have to pay for each of them separately. Yes, that means that pad of butter your dad wants to eat costs him something more. And if you are looking at the cheese and ham realize that they will cost more than your actual meal.
Hate#3. Drug Dealers in Lisbon: This is something even the locales hate. Drug dealers on the pedestrian streets and in the bar districts asking everyone and anyone to buy hashish or worse. They come up regardless of the time of day or people you are with. I have been asked for drugs while I was pushing my son around in his stroller (he was 3 at the time), and my mom (grandma) was offered drugs as well. Just say no and be forceful with it as they will follow you and ask you again and again.
Hate #4. Portuguese Drivers: My Portuguese friends like to tell me there is a little rally driver in each Portuguese. The problem is that means the roads are quite dangerous and that includes the sidewalk. Walk around Porto or Lisbon and you will see. Especially scary for parents with small children.
Hate # 5. Service: Now, not all service is bad in Portugal, if you find a family run restaurant (tasca) or store you will be pleasantly surprised. But the chain stores and restaurants have service that will turn you off of shopping. So, be prepared. The minimum wage is only about 450 euros per month, so that may explain a bit.
And then there are things you will love about Portugal.
Love #1. It is Cheap!! Comparing to any other western and some eastern European countries Portugal is extremely affordable. Whether it is eating out, public transport or drinking your wallet will love your visit to Portugal almost as much as you will!
Love #2. Wine and Food. Portuguese wine is amazing and affordable, if you want to learn how to love wine Portugal has them all, great reds and whites, their green wine (young white) is to die for and of course the world famous Port Wine from Porto. The food here is great as well, whether it is the great selection of seafood or pork or sweets Portuguese food is dang tasty!
Love #3. Nice People: Portugal has amazing people and when you get to know them they become even more affable and friendly. They will invite you to their home or even their grandmas village just to show you a good time in their country. They will let you know the best restaurants and are glad to share. Amazing people.
Love #4. They Speak English. Portuguese are great at English, not only do a majority of the youth (under 40) speak it, they speak it well. And even over 40 you will find a lot of older people that tourist will be in contact with will speak at least workable English. This is helpful regardless of where you are from as English is the international language.
Love #5. The Country. You will love the sites, the history, the everything about Portugal. There is so much to see and do and I just do not have enough space here to write or time on video to explain, but believe me whether it is surfing in Sagres, hiking in the Serra da Estrela, Celebrating Santos in Lisbon, Portugal will be a great trip you will remember forever.
We travel with a Microsoft Surface everywhere we go. I edit my videos on it & use it to backup my pictures and vides while we travel. It’s light and the best travel laptop on the market in my opinion.
amzn.to/2L55pDR
We use Sony Alpha series cameras to film our videos. They are compact so you don’t look like a super tourist when you take great pictures and videos while you travel.
amzn.to/2WbTNFH
We use Manfrotto Tripods. They are compact, travel well, and honestly I would not use another tripod for my nice cameras.
amzn.to/35AWqUs
Travel Plug that works in pretty much any country & has four USB ports. A must for any traveler.

I'm portuguese, and I agree for the most part. BUT: The video is 5 years old now and... Times have changed, for the BETTER! Hate #3: It's better, the police solved that problem in most places; Hate #4: Portuguese drivers are now MUCH better: police and regulations improved. We have much better traffic now, and the mortality rates are much lower now. HATE #5: AVOID tourist cafes, the tourist restaurants, or the big international chains (like McDonalds). PREFER the traditional small shops, go for the places where the locals go. You will have better service. Be welcome!

I have good news for you (and anyone reading this): 1 - You don't have to pay for the bread etc IF you don't eat it. And you can ask the waiter to take those back because you don't want them. Most of us nationals do eat those things before the meal that's why they bring to everyone. If you don't eat anything and they try to charge you for it, complain and they'll correct the bill. 2 - Drug dealers have almost entirely disappeared now, as the Government started to act precisely to improve the tourism quality. The only time where you may encounter them is at night in the old part of Lisbon and Porto where the bars and nightclubs are but that you'll find in every European country anyway. 3 - Employees at fast food restaurants and major chain stores are rude. And you pointed out the precise reason: they're miserable in their jobs. However, honestly, if you're a tourist and you go eat at McDonalds or BurgerKing, well that's your problem lol That said, there is a significant difference between the service in the South and in the North of the country. In the North of Portugal waiters etc are way way more friendly, even in small bigger restaurants. So the trick is to try to stay away from fast food and big restaurants. You'll get great service that way and in the North, going to a small restaurant you'll be treated as if you were part of the owners family. That's something tourists generally greatly appreciate. I, as a Portuguese though, hate it. lol I won't comment on eating times because that's really a cultural thing. We have times for eating. Still, it's not THAT bad. In Vienna, for example, everything is closed by 8:30pm. And as for the driving...yeah we do suffer from the Fittipaldi-syndrome. Still, again...not as bad as in Italy. We do tend to speed though. Now for the bad news: Forget the "cheap". We're living with Northern prices here now. Things in Germany are actually CHEAPER than they are in Portugal. Mainly because VAT here is now 23% as opposed to 19% in Germany. But also because of increasing Government taxes.

@lusoverse8710

Yeah you'll get offered cannabis in some of the more touristy areas of Lisbon, but in my experience they push off if you firmly tell them to. Usually a firm "não!" does the trick. Portugal has decriminalised drugs (at least small amounts) so the dealers take advantage of this for any mug who might believe that what they're selling is the real thing.
@abeirabaixa
@abeirabaixa 7 жыл бұрын
These "false-drug" dealling in Lisbon goes back at least to the 1980's... long before any drug decriminalization... I was a teen at that time and it happened to me... As you say, a clear "No" was enough.

Those guys are still an irritation for the tourists though. I live in Portugal (near Coimbra) and visit Lisboa often. It's one of Europe's most beautiful cities and it's sad that visitors get bothered by these fake dealers when they're walking around the baixas. Portugal's approach to the contraband drug problem is sensible and progressive, and it's a shame that these idiots try to take advantage of it.

Most Portuguese people hate being followed around or asked every minute if they want help or if everything is alright in a shop or restaurant. Hence the "bad service". I avoid small shops where they do that, actually. I guess it's just cultural. (: People will be nice, they will just respond to how you talk to them, in case you don't want to be bothered. But usually if you do start a conversation, you can be friends with anyone in customer service.

Its funny though, everytime I go home to the US and tell people that i live in Portugal they say, oh great so you can speak spanish there... after counting to 3 i tell them nicely that i do speak spanish but in portugal we speak "portuguese" then most people feel a bit stupid and realize there is a difference. Agree with you in most points. However, good news: - At restaurants, just tell the waiter you don't want appetizers, I do it every time - The drug problem in my opinion is much smaller nowadays - Driving and traffic is nowhere near as bad as Italy or France! - Another reason to love Portugal, when compared to most of nothern europe is the weather.

+Bill Morgan Algarve is not Portugal, if you want to see Portugal go to North.... if you prefer beaches just go to silver coast or to Vicentine Coast... Algarve was transformed in a peace of something that I can't even describe... I'm Portuguese last summer I went to Albufeira and I ask for a coffee the guy was not Portuguese, and I was obliged to speak english in my country, what is that? I imagine as a tourist this is not good, of course everyone (or almost) can speak english but transform your culture just to receive tourist for me is losing our identity...

1st: Actually, although you made it sound as if they did, not all Portuguese people speak English, even young people. At least not real fluent English. Most speak well enough to live by, but not to read philosophical books and give conferences for example. So, don't exaggerate and don't get the wrong idea.2nd: As you mentioned it and very truly, Portugal is indeed cheap for foreigners, but very expensive for the actual inhabitants. Of course this varies according to each individual financial situation. But again, if the living cost was even more expensive than already is, most families would die of starvation. There are desperate cases really. Hearing all the time Portugal is cheap makes one want to shoot himself. 3rd: The all "Portuguese people are all nice" thing is a little subjective. Most are polite and nice, but there are several who are the incarnation of rudeness. And those are not very difficult to find! And then, there's the "being a foreigner" factor, which brings up all the Portuguese politeness into the light. You don't want to have a Portuguese person mad at you, believe me. And yes, the people of the north are usually friendlier, at least in a genuine manner. Lisbon people have a fame of being arrogant, which is true to a certain extend, but not entirely. 4th: Most people were never addressed by drug dealers. It's just natural that foreigners end up catching more of their attention. 5th: Thank for not mentioning the beaches because that's just overheard. Really, thank you, I mean it. Yes, Portugal has wonderful beaches, but that's the least wonderful factor of such beautiful country!

+Laurent Grek yeah you're right but most of the kids nowadays speak fluent english.For example i'm 15 and i read english books including philosophical books .

trutas123diretas Yes, but fluency is subjective. Just because you're 15 and already read philosophical books in English, it doesn't mean all people of your age do. Most have a fluent daily-day fluency, not a mesmerizing fluency. And it's only natural that young people are speaking better English earlier and earlier due to the ridiculous amount of English content out there.

You have to compare with the other countries, it's much, much better than say France (although it's improving, especially in the bigger cities. On the countryside, not so much), or Germany, or Hungary, or Italy, or even Spain... And even in countries where language proficiency is better on average, you might meet people who aren't good in English. At all. I was in Denmark, some years ago, and 95%, no problem at all. But that one restaurant in Grenaa, or that one in Nykoebing Mors, hardly a single word. Same in the Netherlands, they might think they can speak English, but I have met people who were 'undertakers', i.e. had their own businesses, who really spoke translated Dutch. For southern Europe, I'd say Portugal is on top when it comes to language proficiency in English, and quite often French, too (with the many Portuguese working in France, Belgium and Luxemburg...)

Raul Pinto Depends on what you do for a living, I guess. If you're one of those people relying on menial jobs, like housekeeping, I doubt it's a grand life you're living. Especially if you want to live in the more interesting areas of the country, and of the city.

@MrCroky123 I think my sodium level is still high from my first trip to Porto when I ate like 15 Francesinhas... They are soooooo good!!!! They have them in Lisbon, but they suck there. You have to get them in Porto or at least the North. Damn it, now i am hungry as hell for a tosta mista and a francesinha! i could never figure out how to make that "molho" they put on the top of the francesinhas.... BUT ONE DAY I WILL GET IT RIGHT! :) Thanks for commenting!

@PeteRavenb Also, I have five love and hates for the US too. I can see the good and the bad within my own country where as it appears you will just point out the bad other places while not looking in the mirror. I do appreciate you watching and commenting. Also, I have lived outside the US for the past 13 years in countries ranging from Brazil to Lithuania so I probably do have a rough idea of culture differences. Anyway thanks for commenting and I look forward to more enlightening posts from U

Yes, we have a "5 things you will love and hate about visiting" Italy, rome, venice, Florence, vicneza, lucca (all in Italy). We also have these videos for lots more places in Europe & US. Just type in 5 things you will love and hate and insert the country you are looking for and see what pops up :) glad you like the series! we appreciate all comments & Italy is super, and it is signicantly cheaper to travel and stay in Italy than the UK. For me I was spending about 30% less in Italy than the UK

@808BROTHER808 Heck I have a video on here where a dealer tries to sell me drugs WHILE I AM MAKING A VIDEO. There have even been articles written about the drug dealers there and the lack of police doing anyhing about it. before you write racist and homophobic comments you should think first. Please no longer comment on my videos as you are not the kind of person I am making these videos for. listen to the video as an outsider and you can see the truth.
