This site is only open to the public two times a year. It is located on the White Sands Missile Range which is a active military installation in New Mexico. The atmosphere was quite a circus with people bringing screaming kids, strollers, beer coolers, bicycles, dogs, and everything else you could think of. The line of cars to get into the base was over two miles long.
Non the less it was quite humbling to be at ground zero and to visit the Mcdonald house which I have seen in so many photographs. The rebar that surrounds the concrete pile at 4:27, is what is left of the original tower that originally held the bomb during detonation. It was about three feet taller but people have taken pieces of it home over the years. This was filmed in April, 2017.

To all asking about the crater, one of two things happened: 1. The radioactive top-soil (or rather sand) was removed for safety or 2. The crater was filled with sand; New Mexico has high winds and over 60 years the wind would blow the sand back

@eltfell 5 жыл бұрын
3. The crater wasn't massive or deep, because it was some sort of air blast ca. 60 ft. off the ground.

I found the nuclear museum in Albuquerque more interesting. It was on my bucket list to have my photo taken next to the marker but there is not much else of interest left at the site. Like Jumbo everything has aged to the point of being disappointing.

@@idontcare9797 You remember that huge metal and concrete tube that he walked through? It was supposed to serve as a container for the radioactive bomb material, but it was unneeded so the Army demolished it in 1946. That round tube is the remains of Jumbo and it was moved to the site.

The site is only open twice a year, for one day only. You meet up at the Santa Rosia New Mexico High School parking lot and the travel in convoy fashion with a military escort to the site. Most of the radioactive dirt was removed or buried on site and covered with a concrete dome. Do not leave the convoy as it is still an active bombing and gunnery range. The surrounding mountains have cameras that track high speed missiles and wayward travelers. During our 2 week stay in Alamogordo we heard many explosions from the area.

I worked on Ft. Bliss and WSMR as a private contractor for the army and I would have access to this area daily. It was interesting to see. Another interesting thing that isn’t too far from there is one of Pat Garrett’s house…at least what’s left of it.

Shouldn't there be a massive crater there??? I assume that was a portion of the tower anchor boxed in that re-rod... Can't believe that would survive.
@travelingtom923
@travelingtom923 6 жыл бұрын
It left a small crater about 5 feet deep and 30 feet wide. Most of the area was leveled many times over to clean up the radioactive glass called Trinitite that resulted from the heat melting the sand. A small portion of the bomb tower did survive the blast which is shown in the video. It was actually much bigger but over the years people have cut portions of it off (including the military) to take home as a souvenir.

No because it was suspended on a tower to give maximum impact. If it was detonated on the ground it would of of left a huge crater and absorbing a majority of it energy. But for maximum impact and to get a accurate test data it was suspended.

Thanks for the tour always wanted to go but I have received enough radiation after working the the decon of Enewetak in 1978 in the US Army. That is where the big Big Craters are. It did not go to well as most of us are dead or dying , but they wont talk about it in the US. But it in Australia its a very big deal because the Pacific ocean is being contaminated by the radiation. See the ABC tv report at kzbin.info/www/bejne/l6bXfnusn5iYrqM

Yes it will be open to the public on April 7th of this year. Here is a link www.wsmr.army.mil/Trinity/Pages/Home.aspx .I am not aware of any radiation poisoning from any visits to the site. It's slightly elevated in that area but not enough to be of any concern unless you are eating the dirt or something.

I live in Canada so I would have to plan that trip. So maybe in October. Also, I was referring to the earlier post that Starry Night posted. I don't know the complete reason to how he managed to get radiation poisoning, however it may be completely unrelated or not even true. I would think that if there was that much of a hazard that there would be an exclusion zone and NO open houses.
