Met Finnish on Holiday in Gran Canerria, years ago, At night at an Holiday complex, at the bar , They were speaking English but I couldn't pin down ,there accent, the clothes they were wearing weant British, well not what I'd seen , I said Hello to the Guy at my side ,and asked where you from in Britain, He said where do think I'm from , I said a scouse, near Liverpool I'd guess, He repeated to his mates in a Language I'd never heard ,they all fell about Laughing, Boy did I feel daft , But they were Brilliant, and made good Friends with them all . Had a few drinks with them all .over the length of the holiday. Always welcoming to my Family.

In Suomenlinna there is also an open prison. Some (but not all) of the groundskeepers and renovations workers you might have seen are inmates serving their sentences. Since it is an open prison some also leave the island for work and study to return on their personal curfew. THis is something I always like to tell especially to Americans because your system is quite a bit different.

@@mikesmith-ut1lt Even if you are a murderer you can get moved to open prison if you have served your sentence without problems and shown the will to rehabilitate. A bit of trivia, the submarine you saw at Suomenlinna is actually a prototype for the German submarine fleet. Since Germany was forbidden to build submarines after WW I they used a Dutch company to order prototypes from Finland. BTW, the shipyard where these were built was located across the river from the fishtail fountain you filmed in Turku. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crichton-Vulcan

When I was a kid in 80's and early 90's Suomenlinna had a lot of super scetchy tunnels, half flooded where you could go and have an super scetchy "adventure". Dunno if they just close off those sections or if they dried them out and just added railings or something.

Yes and some public depth readings are ones measured from ice during the time Finland was still part of Russia. Currently the Finnish Navy is doing a full 3D survey of the coast with the new mine clearing boats and that survey will not be public knowledge on other than for the main routes. So the Navy knows exactly between which islands they can go through with each ship but nobody else does... 😏

As seagulls go, ours are a bit shy due to the scarcity of human interaction. That doesn't mean they're harmless, far from it. And some are pretty cool customers, I remember in my twenties I went with my mother to eat at a restaurant in Helsinki, seated in the open air. When we sat down, there was a hulking big (European herring gull, Larus argentatus) seagull standing immobile right in the meddle of our table. My mother remarked on the excellent quality of taxidermy of this table ornament, when the beady-eyed monster decided to give the slightest bit of attention. It broke its pose and didn't even fly away, just hopped to the edge of the table, down and just lazily walked away.

I grew up surrounded by that history, and I am enthusiastic about art and cultural history, which are the most significant legacy of Suomenlinna In fact, Sveaborg/Viapori/Suomenlinna never had much military significance, but cultural ever the more.

A poem written by Johan Ludvig Runeberg about Sveaborg/Suomenlinna It looks out over the sea and bay With granite eyes, It raises its Gustafssvärd(Gustafs sword) high And proudly says: 'Come here!' That sword is not lowered to strike, It just flashes and shatters like that. Do not faithfully approach the island, As the war makes its rounds, Do not disturb the queen of the lake In her moment of anger: She throws at you the message of death In the sounds of a thousand cannons.

I went kayaking from pretty close to that ferry starting point to Suomenlinna also. Its a nice different viewpoint to see it from water. Some of those old fortresses give really weird feeling thinking how important they have been during their day and how everything has changed. Weapons have gotten so good these days that it would be really hard to have meaningful static fortresses. Fun seeing you visiting familiar places.
