Visiting beautiful Stradsett Hall in Norfolk and my money-saving tips!

This weekend we all paid a visit to one of my oldest friends and Archie’s Godfather, at his beautiful home Stradsett Hall.
Alfred and Charlotte regularly host weddings and events on the grounds, and what incredible grounds they are! You can get married in the rose garden, the unique orangery, and many other areas in and around the estate. They’re about to hold a huge fireworks display, they have vintage rallies and country shows, and we once attended a fairy fayre! The catch-up was so long overdue, as we’d not seen each other since pre-covid. We laughed, reminisced and went for some gorgeous long walks. The fresh air did us all the world of good.
Whilst in Norfolk we also dropped our dear Lola off to a specialised dog trainer based in the area, where she’ll stay for a little educational holiday! I don’t have the time she so needs to be trained to her best, so we’re leaving her in the extremely capable hands of a kind and gentle countryman who will show her the ropes. We’re catching up with him next week so I shall keep you all posted on her progress!
I also thought I’d spend some time talking you through some of my money-saving tips, including how I make my very own general-purpose cleaning spray for the home to save on buying lots of expensive cleaning products. I also chat about heating, banking admin, cutting down on subscriptions and making the most of your meals.
Lastly, I thought I’d chat a little more about why I am so, so incredibly proud of my dear husband and his recent award. Recognition for hard work does go so far in motivating you to keep doing your best and never giving up, and he has been an absolute trooper these past few years.

Another fabulous video C! I use Zoflora scented disinfectant diluted in water for air freshener, sink refresher, keeping the bin nice. Living in Australia where it’s warm it’s essential- and miraculously disinfectant kills mosquitoes!!

This reminds me of a talk Helen Bankes from the Old Mill gave at the Womens' Institute a few weeks ago on the cost of living. She gave tips on how to make your own lady towels although as the Vicar noted, given the audience were all over 70 the advice was either redundant or we were in the midst of a mass miracle. She then gave some tips on how to make a bird scarer out of old caviar tins followed by a short slide show of her holiday to Biaritz. Mrs Grundon said "I remember when she had one bra to her name" but I think she's still living high on the hog since George bought 50% of what subsequently became Google (Ironically he was furious at the time as he thought he was buying shares in Gary Glitter's royalities)

Thank you so much for this video, and thank you for your honesty. We have been cutting back wherever we can, putting off putting the heating on, just using the open fire, batch cooking, I bought a slow cooker (love it, what a revelation)!, changed the car for one that is half the price to run. I actually like that there’s no embarrassment at all in it-we all talk about it in work and share tips etc. Well done to you doing the clipping!xx

Lovely vlog as usual Charlie, thank you. I use E-cloths to clean windows, they have ones specifically for the job, just use water on one and wipe off with the dry cloth. They work really well and are easily washed. No need for expensive cleaner and they last for ages.

Whilst it gets cold(ish) in South Australia in winter it’s no where as cold as in other countries, so we just dress warmly. Major cost saving, although cooling is essential here in summer. I ride my bike whenever I can, major saving in petrol dollars. Given the sun shines a lot here, fortunately we don’t need to use the dryer very often. Try to live leanly as a lot of people do, but grateful for what I have and where I am. A penny saved is a penny earned.

We used to leave the porch light on all night, every night - but have now put a spare, movement-activated solar light half way up the wall - a game changer! It springs into life as soon as we open the door or when we come onto the drive in the car or on foot - initial outlay was about £5 but now it’s free light, because it’s only halfway up it doesn’t blind you while you’re finding your door key and it gets the maximum daylight charge…
