@@FatimaMalla Mrs. Russel is based on Alva Vanderbilt. She famously divorced her cheating husband, was ostracized for it by polite society, faked a heart ailment in order to force her reluctant daughter to marry a cold unfeeling British duke to regain her lost position, she eventually supported her daughter when she divorced the unfaithful duke. Alva dominated New York society until her death. I'm not sure if Julian Fellowes will strictly recreate Alva's life in Mrs. Russel. He might or might not, we shall see.

My problem is that I'm quite familiar with these houses and so when they get played with, I have to laugh. This is the Wetmore estate Chateau-sur-Mer. Just within this series, Mr. Adams talks about staying here with the Wetmores, and the interiors were already used as Mamie Fish's NYC mansion. Surprisingly, Mrs. Astor's Newport "cottage" was not a marble palace but an older 19th century house with an added ballroom (Maybe they couldn't get permission to film from Larry Ellison who now owns it or it was in the middle of being renovated for him.) This scene was quite fun.

@@mtmslg I do and I don't. In the Gilded Age, they use Chateau-sur-Mer's interior for Mamie Fish's NYC home and the exterior for Mrs. Astor's Beechwood. BUT... John Adams also refers to staying at Chateau-sur-Mer with the Wetmores (actual owners). This is the type of thing that I do not like.

Mrs. Russel is really a pathetic character. She likes to present herself as one of the grand high society ladies but she lacks the most basic manners ... like you don' t pop uninvited to somebody else's house however much you're curious to peep on their interiors so that you could later copy and/or outmatchthem. She could have spared herself such an embarrassment really . This is something i have often observed, money can buy a lot of things but not dignity.

Beechwood Mansion is a private owner estate. It’s also been under a full renovation, so it’s not even usable at the moment for filming.
