Wow! I used to regularly drive the route that took me under the old disused freight bridge! It was getting so rusted, I wondered when it would fall down! Was good when that new cycle/footpath bridge replaced it. In the early 1960's, I used to stand by the fence in Patterson Park, watching the old wagons being shunted in the Bricklayers Arms marshalling yard. Happy memories!

An interesting look at an oft-forgotten area of railway history. South Bermondsey was a real beacon for arrival into London from the south and east. I well remember the huge platform canopy that looked like a giant dutch barn with its rounded roof. As a child, that and the Pearce Duffs Custard sign on a wall, told me that we were nearing Waterloo and Charing Cross and a, hopefully lovely, day out, which didn't happen that often in those days as we lived on the coast in Hastings.

@@HenrysAdventures Now the show is over I can reply to you. I think that station is probably one of the most unusual in the UK. For its construction, situation, and access.I suppose I should do more railway videos, but not many of them in the area I film in.

Thanks for posting. Just before the road under bridge (on the South Bermondsey station side) was North Kent West Junction signal box, which controlled the junction where both sets of line joined. There were steps up to the box from the road. I was involved in striping out the signal box in 1982, where some of the equipment was salvaged for the Watercress Line. We also removed the turntable and the wheel drop from the depot a mile or so further down the branch at Bricklayers Arms.

So the first exit on the right as you come out of the station is for away fans. Millwall fans walk down to the next exit on the left as the sign directs. My dad and uncle worked at Bricklayers Arms depot. Good Video H.

Used South Bermondsey in the 1990s when I lived around the corner. In 1990 the station still had the wooden platform exposed, but they put the non slip surface on when someone slipped between the platform and (stationary) train and badly hurt their legs.

Oh to see my teams ground in all its glory... My late father started his signalling career at North Kent East Junction signalbox, this was the signalbox that was the primary box for the branch and incidentally not far from the first signalling ever on railways. To understand the years before the Royal Mail became the only users, the termini of London Bridge, Cannon Street and Charing Cross lacked decent coaling points, this was done at the engineering works at Bricklayers Arms which was a vast industrial place along the branch. Engines would have to take a train into Cannon Street or Charing Cross, then hot on the tail of the train they brought in, reverse all the way down to North Kent to clear the access ramp, then drive forward to be coaled and watered, then turned on the turntable with the oilers doing their thing as it was turned, then it would drive front end first again to North Kent Jnc, get its light engine permission from the signalman and have to reverse ALL the way back to pick up its next haul from one of the terminii. Interestingly, the line was mothballed for many years at first but vandalism of the lower level signalbox, theft of cables etc and small industrial units just using the old line as a car park/tip saw it beyond use yet the old signal connected to London Bridge glowed red for many long years despite the only viable track left on the ramp itself. My father got to keep the old signal identifier when they finally pulled it out of the panel at London Bridge and the line was severed.

Thank you for sharing this information. I found reading it very interesting and fascinating how the locos would remain with the train they had just brought in to get them back to Bricklayers Arms.

Before the building of the Bermondsey diveunder and as the London bound train approached the Bermondsey Trading Estate, you could see a small stretch of overgrown track that formed the Bricklayers Arms branch line. I actually found an image online, but it has now gone.
