Holy shit, how did you manage with 65% SpO²? When we were offroading in South America, one of us dropped to 80% when we were in the Andes and he was seriously ill because of it. We almost broke up the trip. In a hotel it hit me too when I woke up and felt like I was suffocating, but no matter how much I breathed the feeling wouldn't go away. One of the worst experiences in my life. I take my hat off to you for powering through this.

altitude sickness is the worst feeling in the world. imagine having zero energy to do anything but writhe in agony, a severe headache that wont go away, nausea that wont go away, shortness of breath, no appetite, high blood pressure, being tired but unable to sleep due to these symptoms persisting for 12-24 hours until you acclimatize and get a good meal in you. you truly feel like you are dying because you are.

@@youmightknowmelater1212interesting, i didnt know that. my experience with altitude sickness was from backpacking to the summit of Mt. Whitney in the Sierra Nevadas... at about 11,000ft/3300m it starts for most people, and hiking slowly up to that elevation doesnt help, it's basically unavoidable if you normally live at sea level.. but everyone seems to be affected by it differently (different lengths of time, same horrible symptoms)

@@DirectorHMAN *To give you an example: People watching this video probably think that the people born in that town "evolved" to produce twice the amount of blood cells to live there, right?* *It actually doesn't work that way - every organism on this planet has a limited ability to naturally adjust to new surroundings (within given circumstances).* *The people born there did not "evolve" some new aspect to their physiology that became permanent.* *Their bodies naturally acclimated to produce twice the amount of blood cells to live there - but as soon as they leave that town and go live at the lower elevations with the rest of the Human race - their bodies will then revert back to producing the normal amount of blood cells.* *The same as you, a person who was not born there, will also acclimate naturally and produce twice as many blood cells as normal, just like them.* *And it will not become a permanent part of your physiology.* *Once you leave to the normal lower elevations, your body will produce the normal amount of blood cells - no "Evolution" involved.* *Evolution and Adaptation are two different things and are not mutually-exclusive.* *This is why there is no such thing as "Micro-Evolution" and "Macro-Evolution" - those are misnomers.* *There is only either Adaptation or "Evolution".* *And this story demonstrably doesn't involve any Evolution.*

That sort of thing is why biology is cool. Athletes will improve their stamina by limiting their oxygen intake, usually by wearing masks. This makes their lungs more efficient and probably does some other neat things as well. If La Rinconada was better maintained, athletes would probably travel there to train. Though there’s probably all sorts of problems with that idea too, so maybe not

afaik altitude training works if you do it periodically not constantly. Staying at altitude constantly will make your body adapt to that altitude. I’ve gotten altitude sickness before. Me and my fiance hiked a mountain and I got tunnel vision and started seeing spots. It got so rough at points, we’d walk maybe a 1/4 mile before we needed to take a break. It’s no joke. The mountain is at about 8,700ft (they’re at about 16,400ft, for reference) above sea level, we’re used to about 600ft. That was the worst hike I’ve ever done. Guadalupe Peak on the border of Texas and New Mexico at the start of summer. The flies were so bad they were trying to bite us to get moisture. Luckily we wore moisture wicking clothing and were covered from head to toe, no skin showing to protect us from the desert. 🏜️ Not a great view from the top. Just a whole lot of nothing. We were not all the way prepared. Didn’t bring enough water. So we originally planned to camp at the top of the mountain, instead took another 4ish hours to get back down and drive 2 hours to a hotel in the middle of the night 😂 Super happy we did the hike, it was a challenge for sure. But never again.

I am a respiratory therapist and seeing what you went through, I imagine it was your most difficult trip as of yet. It was hard to watch for me because he was so miserable the whole time. When I was travelling in Peru, I was mostly fine, but my mother got really sick, even though we first went up to 2000 m and then continued to 4000. It took her almost 10 days to adapt to the altitude... After the 2000 m town, we crossed a mountain pass that was close to 5000 and the bus stopped there for a loo break - strangest place ever for a public toilet. I had never been higher up than 2500 m. When the bus started hooting the horn, I ran over there and climbed up the 3 steps of this old school bus, and suddenly I was so out of breath and grasping for air as if I'd run a marathon, and the locals were laughing. I found it very hard to sleep in the 4000 m places, the only way was with many pillows under my head, on my back, and with lots of clothes on instead of heavy blankets. I'd still always find a way to bury my head in the pillow and wake up gulping and grasping for air

I've lived my whole life in a sea level area in the US, except for a trip to Asia years ago where I toured several countries, and I can say without any doubt, altitude sickness for a healthy full grown 26 year old man is the most miserable and willpower breaking experience I have ever had in my life. Two of our group were part of a team who planned to climb Everest so we got to visit Dingboche near Everest to drop them off and I was miserable for the whole 24 hours we stayed. Nauseous, head splitting headaches, constant coughing and drainage, muscle cramps just walking around town, and lightheadedness like I was in a fog. It didn't clear till we dropped back down to about 10k feet and took me a good day to get back to feeling some what normal. I have mad respect for folks who can actually live at those altitudes. I will stick to my little piece of the world at 12 feet above sea level here in America.

This was so intense. I’ve never heard of such conditions. What a sacrifice to live a life like that. It was a gamble just to document. Amazing work on this video.

RT here, the partial pressure of oxygen in the air is lower, which can result in a lower arterial oxygen saturation (SpO2). While the pulse oximeter can still measure oxygen saturation, it will reflect the decreased oxygen availability at altitude, potentially showing a lower reading than what you'd expect at sea level

I was shocked too that the town was so big and had so much night life when it was so horrible to live at. Some of them have got to be making some money for that many people to be there.

I grew up in a town around about 2000 meters above sea-level. So about 1400 meters lower than Abra La Pampilla. I used to gym a lot up there... but when I moved down to the coast, I felt almost twice as strong. It was crazy.

All jokes aside. This is an awesome video to show people like us, that we truly have it easy. We really do. Such a shame that the government won’t intervene and help them out. Although, people are there for selfish reasons. Such as finding gold but man I still think the locals that grew up there, deserve way more. Especially those kids. I’m praying for them.
