La Rinconada, the closest inhabited place to the sky on Earth, where people are living above the clouds. Life on the highest habitable altitude is tough.
At this extreme altitude of 5,100 meters, the atmosphere significantly thins and the locals are living with only 50% of the usual oxygen levels. Their bodies have evolved to produce two times more blood cells than ours. On this barren land, not even a single tree can survive because of the low air pressure.
This town in the Peruvian Andes is even 300 meters higher than Mont Blanc, the highest peak in the Alps of Europe.
Far from the modern world, it is a place where crime and danger are always nearby. People come to these harsh lands for only one reason: gold. About 50,000 people have settled here, among piles of trash, all dreaming of wealth.

Holy shit, how did you manage with 65% SpO²? When we were offroading in South America, one of us dropped to 80% when we were in the Andes and he was seriously ill because of it. We almost broke up the trip. In a hotel it hit me too when I woke up and felt like I was suffocating, but no matter how much I breathed the feeling wouldn't go away. One of the worst experiences in my life. I take my hat off to you for powering through this.

🌳THE GOSPEL OF THE WORD OF ALMIGHTY GOD "the last age in which God is saving man from the imminent destruction of this old world" (Since the time of the Almighty God - the King of the Kingdom - has witnessed the scope of God's rule is completely revealed throughout in the universe. Not only in China witnessed God's manifestation, but witnessed the Name of the Almighty God in all nations and all places. They now call the Holy Spirit now and awakened by his voice. This is the voice of God's mercy. Calling They are all in the holy name of the Almighty God! They praise and sing. The Almighty God is the King of the Life of the universe! He sits on the glorious throne and condemn the world, dominating all the nations; All the breeds kneel on him, praying to him, approaching him and talk to him. The sound of this weeping is the sound of anointed to the lake of fire and sulfur, and it is the cries of the steel of the iron rod of God; This is the judgment before the throne of Christ.) Almighty God said SINCE the TIME of the ALMIGHTY GOD --- The King of the Kingdom --- witnessed, the scope of GOD'S RULE was COMPLETELY REVEALED throughout the UNIVERSE. Not only in CHINA witnessed GOD'S MANIFESTATION, but WITNESSED the NAME of the ALMIGHTY GOD in ALL NATIONS and all PLACES. They ALL CALL this HOLY NAME, SEEKING to mingle with GOD in any POSSIBLE WAY, UNDERSTANDING the WILL of the ALMIGHTY GOD and unitedly SERVING him within the CHURCH. THIS is the WONDERFUL way of MAKING the HOLY SPIRIT. 🙏 The LANGUAGES of DIFFERENT COUNTRIES are DIFFERENT, BUT ONLY the SPIRIT. This SPIRIT BRINGS the CHURCHES THROUGHOUT the UNIVERSE and QUITE UNITED with GOD, WITHOUT even a SLIGHT DIFFERENCE. It is something that no longer is not being recented. THEY are NOW CALLED the HOLY SPIRIT and AWAKEN their VOICE. This is the VOICE of GOD'S COMPASSION. THEY are ALL CALLING to the HOLY NAME of ALMIGHTY GOD! They PRAISE and SING. 🛑🙏 Can never have any deviation in the work of the Holy Spirit; These people will do everything to move forward in the right path, they do not go back - the wonders are coating. It is something that is hard to imagine and impossible to know by people. The ALMIGHTY GOD is the KING OF the LIFE of the UNIVERSE! He SITS on the GLORIOUS THRONE and CONDEMN the WORLD, DOMINATING ALL, and ALL NATIONS are RULED; All the BREEDS KNEEL on Him, PRAYING to Him, APPROACHING Him and TALK to Him. How long have you BELIEVED in GOD, no matter how much your status is or how far your service gap is far, if you are opposed to God in your hearts, you must judge and need to prosper in front of Him, when grabbing a painful plea; It really is the harvest of the fruits of your own works. ☀️ The sound of this weeping is the sound of the lake of fire and sulfur, and this is the cries of the steel of the iron rod of God; This is the judgment before the throne of Christ. 🙏 From "The WORD Appears in the Flesh". Holy Book. Fulfilled in "In the beginning he was Word, the Word was with God, and the Word was God" (John 1: 1). ... And (Ezekiel 2: 9-10). (Rev. 19:13). 📥Calling and leading everyone to His lowered Kingdom or Church because it is still standing on earth in the holy place in the air/ youtube "THE CHURCH OF ALMIGHTY GOD 💐 this is the fulfillment of what he said to Peter 2,000 years ago, recorded in (Matthew 16:18'19). This is the the only Church of each one of our spirit that we must listen to or eat and drink like how we eat, dress and sleep every day so that he can guide us and change us by rejecting the evil attached by satan so as to be perfect, having attained eternal life that will enter the coming replacement of the new heaven and new earth. 💌

I am from Lima, and few people know about this place. I have a friend from Puno, and when I asked her about La Rinconada, she was completely unaware of it. Now I see that it is heavily polluted, and the Peruvian government doesn't care; it only focuses on foreign investment. In the long run, that glacier supplies water to cities much further downstream.

I made a friend from a small town in peru and she told me about the failures of the government and the growing corruption. This documentary felt like a refresher on all the things she told me. For her the most distressing things she experienced were only talked about for a short period in this video. The underage "companion" girls that the government doesnt care about protecting.

altitude sickness is the worst feeling in the world. imagine having zero energy to do anything but writhe in agony, a severe headache that wont go away, nausea that wont go away, shortness of breath, no appetite, high blood pressure, being tired but unable to sleep due to these symptoms persisting for 12-24 hours until you acclimatize and get a good meal in you. you truly feel like you are dying because you are.

@@youmightknowmelater1212interesting, i didnt know that. my experience with altitude sickness was from backpacking to the summit of Mt. Whitney in the Sierra Nevadas... at about 11,000ft/3300m it starts for most people, and hiking slowly up to that elevation doesnt help, it's basically unavoidable if you normally live at sea level.. but everyone seems to be affected by it differently (different lengths of time, same horrible symptoms)

I traveled the Jama Pass between San Pedro do Atacama Chile to Argentina at 4,800 M (15,800 ft) at it's peak. My head was going to explode and the pressure behind my eyes felt like they were going to pop out of there sockets. Massive headache, nausea, and felt like I was sufficating. No oxegen tanks on the bus, the driver took a wrong turn because the road was under construcion and parts were getting paved, no detour signs, then a flat tire, backtrack Km's to where we started. I can laugh now about it but I Never want to experience that again.

Huge respect for you and your crew, also the tour guide that seemed received higher education and willing to devoted himself to this place. As a Chinese who lived in the mainland of China 30 years ago, I witnessed a bit of what a underdeveloped country is like, and this documentary reminds me a lot of the pre-developed China, and the memory seemed a lifetime ago. I can never imagine there are still people living in such uninhabitable condition nowadays. It's really disheartening seeing people stuck in such environment.

Our experiences were very different almost all of the American colleagues struggle with day to day breathing and myself adapted after the first day with no issues afterwards. Not starting the trip from sea level can make all the difference.

The thing that is mind blowing to me, is that most people who live there never achieve the wealth they want. Yet they stay there, just makes you wonder how bad their previous towns or lives must've been to convince them to stay there.

As someone born and raised in a city at 3,000 meters altitude, you DO get used to it. Even if you're not from a high altitude place, in a matter of days you'll be feeling fine. But it does hit hard at first. Even us natives need a few days to get back to normal after traveling to low altitude places.

@@ahalpert I don't know at 5,000 meters. That's pretty high and it's pretty rough. At 3,000 meters though? For sure. My city has over 8 million inhabitants. You can bet people are giving birth here. According to statistics, the infant mortality and childbirth mortality rates are on par with the rest of the country, so it doesn't seem like height has a particularly negative impact on that. However, I have known plenty of elderly people as well as people with respiratory diseases who need to move elsewhere because the lack of oxygen starts to affect them. But some of my classmates had asthma growing up and it didn't seem to affect them particularly worse than people in lower altitudes.

I'm now even more grateful for my comfortable life here in England. Those people have to put up with so much. Thanks for giving us a glimpse into another world.

I was born in a small town at the bottom of El Pico de Orizaba, (Citlaltépetl Volcano) in Mexico. I didn’t know about the difference in oxygen levels between places until I grew up and travelled to other countries. When I took my boyfriend to my hometown to meet my grandmother, he couldn’t breathe and felt dizzy. This place is very similar to El Pico de Orizaba. You should visit it as well. It’s cold so be prepared.

I am a respiratory therapist and seeing what you went through, I imagine it was your most difficult trip as of yet. The levels of O2 and your symptoms were dangerously low and the misery in your face showed it so. I hope you take care of yourself on your other adventures.

It was hard to watch for me because he was so miserable the whole time. When I was travelling in Peru, I was mostly fine, but my mother got really sick, even though we first went up to 2000 m and then continued to 4000. It took her almost 10 days to adapt to the altitude... After the 2000 m town, we crossed a mountain pass that was close to 5000 and the bus stopped there for a loo break - strangest place ever for a public toilet. I had never been higher up than 2500 m. When the bus started hooting the horn, I ran over there and climbed up the 3 steps of this old school bus, and suddenly I was so out of breath and grasping for air as if I'd run a marathon, and the locals were laughing. I found it very hard to sleep in the 4000 m places, the only way was with many pillows under my head, on my back, and with lots of clothes on instead of heavy blankets. I'd still always find a way to bury my head in the pillow and wake up gulping and grasping for air

I understand you, I went to the Lincuna mine ( Peru )(4800) my oxygenation was at 65 and I was making an effort. MY GREAT RECOMMENDATION FOR EVERYONE WHO CLIMBS TO HIGH ALTITUDE IS TO WEAR A CAP AND DO NOT REMOVE IT, TAKE ELECTROLYTES OR GATOREATE SO THAT YOU ARE HYDRATED AND PRACTICE YOUR BREATHING BEFORE AND WHEN YOU ARE AT YOUR DESTINATION. DON'T EAT SOLIDS JUST SOUPS AT THE BEGINNING, TAKE COCA MATE (COCA BASED CAPSULE PILLS) AND WITH THAT YOU WILL BE FINE!!!
