Note: For anyone who is disappointed I didn't visit the real Magic Bus that Chris lived in, see this video of Chris' sister, Carinne McCandless, who hiked out to the original bus with a group of people: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oH6xZmWff7tmp7s Pretty cool video. I would love to hike out to the bus another time when I'm more prepared for it. This time I was in Alaska to work for the summer season and didn't have enough free time, the proper gear, etc.

This was great, I got to relive some old times. I myself was working in the Denali National Park in the summer of 2006 at the Kantishna Roadhouse. After a couple weeks myself, and a co-worker were going to go to Healy for our two days off, we got to fly with Kantishna Air for free to the park's entrance, this was a perk for working at the Roadhouse. We were flying by Mt Denali when the pilot asked if we wanted to see McCandless's bus? I, nor my friend, knew what he was talking about...the pilot then filled me in on the Into The Wild Story...I was enthralled at this amazing story...the pilot told me about the book Jon Krakauer had written. When we returned to work a couple days later I ventured into the main building to say hi to some other workers there and noticed the white dry eraser board that was used to announce events and guest speakers at the Lodge, had the name Jon Krakauer on it...he was to be a guest the next night. I of course had to hear the story from him, since I had yet read the book. Jon was very good, as an author, and a speaker...and I got a copy of his book, and read it that night. Now, the weird part to this story...About two weeks from then I was finishing up plating up that nights dinner (I am a chef) and was running around crazy like when all of a sudden a co-worker called my name and said someone there wanted to thank me personally for dinner, without looking up, I asked for one minute. I came around from the kitchen and lo and behold was Sean Penn and (who I later learned was) Emile Hirsh. I was in awe...being the same age as Sean, and a huge fan all the way back to Bad Boys...I went in for, and received the "hug"...I asked him what he was doing there, and he told me they drove in for the day on the infamous 92 mile Denali Highway (The only way in and out of the park)...he said he was doing a movie, directing he said...I asked for the name and he blew me away by saying "Into The Wild". Again, I have been there only a few weeks, and had never heard of this McCandless, or the bus, nothing...now within the month, I've been educated on all fronts!!! It was and has been very fascinating for me...I could not wait for the movie...after seeing it I know felt educated and filled with completion on this adventure...I was very honored in reading the book, and very honored by watching the great movie. A couple years later I returned to work at the park entrance to Head Chef the Denali River Cabins...One weekend me an a girl that worked there ventured into Healy for a couple beers, this is when we discovered The 49th State Brewery, we pulled in and I immediately saw bus #142 sitting there in all her glory, I spent a couple hours just hovering around, in and on the bus...recreating photo opportunities that were seen in the movie, my favorite was the one from the ending when the camera is outside the back of the bus window looking in and down on Chris has he lays on the bed in his sleeping bag and starts panning out and up...I laid on the bed and had my friend take a picture through that back window from outside the bus. Thank you Gabriel for reminding me of those great memories. I myself would love to make that journey to the actual bus...and although I have seen it from the air less than a hundred feet above it...I would love to see the real one...I think, no, I believe that would be the final leg in this amazing Into The Wild story I've had the pleasure of recreating, and living with. Again, thanks

I can relate to chris. I myself have taken off and spent up to 2 months at a time in the Sierra Nevada mountains alone with almost no gear. There is something healing about relying on only yourself. The difference I think is I know my limits. It's easy to think you are prepared for a situation like the one Chris found himself in but reality can quickly make you realize just how much you don't know. I guess that is part of what makes living off the land so beautiful and healing. Nature and the elements are one of our greatest teachers. RIP Chris.

There's more to Chris McCandless's story or backstory -- family secrets and domestic violence. Carine, his sister published a book three years ago going into some of the details as to what might have pushed Chris to escape into the wild, apart from his inner wanderlust.

I watched a documentary on him before they made the movie. Sad story. I once walked/ hitch hiked about 30 miles. The scant food I brought was gone in the first day. I had very little money and no place to sleep in the city from my home town. I was lying in a ravine near a truck stop contemplating my life decision and concluded it was time to throw in the towel. It was then I realized just how difficult if not impossible it is to walk/hitch hike as a means of travel. I walked almost 9 miles of my journey in the summer heat. Getting to my point now. Christopher made extremely poor judgement in doing what he did. But I totally understand what drove him to do it. It was the same thing that drove me to walk and hitch hike 30 miles. Ultimately his poor judgement cost him his life but frankly he got an extraordinary adventure out of it and I would not for one minute say he wasted his life. I hope wherever he is he endures no more suffering. His story was incredible.

When I saw the movie of course I cried again, I was in Denali in JUNE 1992, the same time Chris was some miles away on his one way Journey.
