This time, I'm spending 48 hours at the edge of the world. Foula, nestled in the Atlantic waters and part of the Shetland Islands, is one of the UK's most remote permanently inhabited islands. Home to thousands of seabirds, hundreds of hardy sheep, and the second highest sea cliffs in Britain, this wild and isolated place is where around 30 people call home.
In this video, I share how to get to Foula and my stay at the Ristie Guesthouse on the island's north side for two nights. While on Foula, I attempt to hike the big sea cliff called Da Kame, encounter Shetland ponies and puffins, enjoy a guided walk with the Foula Ranger, and nearly get blown away by high winds and heavy rain.

If the accommodation was warm and toasty, had plenty of decent food and clean drinking water, if it also had a computer and internet set up like mine at home; then six months would be a breeze 🤣If it was as like when you were there, then two or three days would probably be enough. I've often been completely on my own, not leaving the house (except for pets) and I'd no problems such as cabin fever setting in...good home entertainment is key plus interests and hobbies; I'm quite social yet I like some down time too 🙃 Good show Ruth.

A bit about the Oceanic, it ended up on a reef called the Shaalds, a couple of clam divers decided to take a busman's holiday to Foula, and met up with a local fisherman who regularly caught "Rusty" lobsters, that's when they found out about the "Oceanic" wrecked on the reef called the "Shaalds". They managed to blag a ride in the fisherman's boat to check it out. Eventually, they spent seven years scrapping the liner, having many adventures and writing of their exploits in a book called "The Other Titanic" Ripping yarns, especially for a diver or not!😁

Just 15 minutes into watching so far and spotted some of my animals, the ponies. 😂 Northharrier Kirch is the grey one trying to give you kisses, he's a sweetheart. Kirch was born on Foula and has never left the isle. I've owned him for the great majority of his 19 years. My 2 red and white ponies with him are also Foula born, mother and daughter pair Northharrier Reflection and Charliemay Rain-goose. Most of my others are from Unst arriving here on the ferry.

Hi Ruth, I lived in Shetland of over 7 years and it has a place in my heart for sure. I've heard born and bred Shetlanders use both Ler-wick and Leh-rick in conversation. I think it just depends on what part of Shetland the individual is from. I've had quite a few encounters with Bonxies on Hermaness, on Unst. They're quite intimidating, aren't they. Another scary bird is the Artic Tern, known as the Tirrick in Shetland. They're very much smaller than the Bonxie, but with a fearsome, sword-like bill. They nest at the top of beaches, on the ground, and attack in squadrons of many and from all directions if you're unlucky enough to wander too close to their nests. They can easily draw blood with their bills, but they also target you with nasty smelling poo too!! I never managed to get over to Foula, sadly, but hope to one day. I have been lucky enough to visit the island of Mousa and its broch, which is the most complete and best-preserved broch in Scotland.

Ruth, you asked for recommendations for rainwear that would withstand the Scottish climate. Last year I went to Alaska and it rains there a lot and fiercely. So I researched Goretex rainwear and bought a hooded raincoat. There are different companies who sell Goretex. I always wondered if it was worth the price. There are several types to choose from depending on your preferences. I decided after being drenched with regular rain gear I would give it a try. What a revelation! It rained everyday I was in Alaska and I was a comfortable as can be. Not only that but I found some trail shoes that are also Goretex, so no more wet socks and chilly feet. It is well worth every cent!

Enjoyable video Ruth. Have you seen the 1937 movie by Powell and Pressburger called The Edge of the World ? It’s about the final evacuation of the island of StKilda. They were not allowed to film on that island so they chose Foula as their location. The cast and crew had to stay there for months, building their own accommodation, and suffering from similar conditions that you did. I think you would enjoy the film very much as it shows the raw natural beauty of Foula.

Each time I went with Brathay Exploration Group & stayed in Ristie which at that time was much more basic than clearly it is now. The island made a lasting impression on me in terms of it's sheer beauty, the cliffs, the variety of its rocky & its boulder beaches. Does the Gaarda Stack still haves its arch? Thank Ruth for the exceptional experience. Your ‘Birds’ encounter was way more real than the Hitchcock flick. Loved the Shetland ponies segment. The story here is my Great-grandfather brought the first Shetland ponies to North Carolina and gave my Mom one when she was a girl. I remember she told me ‘They bite!’ Glad you avoided that! Thanks again.

Oh wow that’s an amazing story! Do you still have any ponies?
@johnstrandberg1652

@@ruthaisling Unfortunately no. My Great-grandfather owned a really large track of land in our city/county where his main business was a nursery. All was lost in the depression of the 1930’s. I believe the story of the ponies was documented in a book about our city which was probably first published in the 1950’s. Interestingly, wild horses still freely roam the outer banks of North Carolina - descendants of those brought here by explorers (Spanish?) from the 1500’s. Thanks again for your amazing videos.

Another great video, Ruth. You can't make vicarious seem any more real. The maps and drone views are very helpful. It's amazing that with just 35 residents they can maintain their own water and power infrastructure. The discussion with Sheila was fascinating. It brought vividly to mind what living in that harsh climate without electricity and running water was like. Your attempt at a shortcut back to your lodgings from Da Sneck O' D Smaallie was harrowing. You are a consummate videographer and storyteller. Thanks so much for bringing us all along on your adventures.

What an incredible journey. 70 meters is 229 ft. Good you didn't venture further being so wet. Appreciate you sharing and would gladly stay there. I had no idea accommodations were even an option. Nesting caused those attacks, just doing their job protecting. Park ranger and ponies just classic. Very kind to provide so much details. Enjoy your week 🌻🦋 Looking forward to the next video.

Hi Ruth, glad you enjoyed Foula. I stayed there twice in 2006 and 2008 at Ristie, both times I had fantastic weather and great interaction with the locals, sadly some of whom are no longer with us. I few around the isle, sailed around the isle and walked all the hills and coastline, had a fantastic time time there.
