Being nice costs nothing but just makes your day! I had a lady roll her car window down when I was filling my tire with air and she asked if I needed a wet wipe to wipe my hands because it always makes her hands dirty to do that and it caught me by surprise that anyone would be that sweet because it’s so unheard of now days. It just made my day! ❤

In fortums the last time we went the staff seemed to be either indifferent or lack lustre. Yet when i took my then aged mum in 2015 we were served by a few bright and engaging people. One much older man on the tills near the exit was very charming and bent to speak direvtly to mum in her wheelchair to ask how her day had been, and what we had planned next. It made the visit for us.

As we went through the perfume department, there was a young gentleman spraying perfume on a Harrods hankerchief and offered it to my husband. Being a typical male, my husband refused it. Yep. I went into Fortnum and Masons in St Pancras and the woman ignored me standing at the till - there was a woman in front and her child was on the floor, so I looked down to make sure I wasn't stepping on her and waited for the child to move. Then as I moved forward the sales assistant walked past to put a basket away and then went off to talk to her friend. I was about to leave when a manager walked out and saw me staring in shock and the two of them standing in a corner and asked me if I was being served, I said no, so she told the woman to serve me. That sales assistant never even apologised for keeping me waiting. I've had better service in Poundland. Never been in Fortnum and Mason since.

Back in the day when I was a lad, the perfumery department was the Banking Hall. There as a wonderful high ceiling, now hidden, and green leather sofas lined the centre, with old fashioned grill banking counters on the side. My grandmother could happily pass the day just sitting there (perhaps having been first to the chiropodist at Harvey Nicolls) and, accordingly, my brother and I named it “the staring hall.” Harrods was a local store in those days - albeit an upmarket and large one. My mother popped in for her daily loaf of bread and, in summer, an ice cream, coated in chocolate and fashioned as a seated Teddy Bear. Happy Days! I wouldn’t be seen dead in what it has become over the past couple of decades.

I'm 73. Back in the 1970s I was a young rich girl who shopped at Harrods. My fave in the food hall was their gala pie (long posh square pork pie) and smoked salmon. They did the loveliest smoked salmon. Prices were very high then, silly money, but I was rich so Ip could easily afford it. Once I saw a big chocolate easter egg for £1500. That's like £30k in today's money. Silly money for an easter egg. Everything in Harrods was excruciatingly dear, but all tip-top quality stuff. Then when Al Fayed bough Harrods I think the goods stocked in it went downhill. It turned from being very classy and upmarket to selling a lot of gaudy gauche stuff, with too much lower taste Asian influence. It watered down the top quality traditional elegant British stuff that upper class people liked. I've not been in Harrods for 40 years now. Do they still have dog kennels to board your dog in the basement whilst you shop?? I parked my poodle there often for a few hours whilst I spent loads of money on furniture, clothes, jewelery and food. The liveried doorman used to walk the dogs too. Fond memories of Harrods circa 1970s. I've still got my big green vinyl shopping bag with the Harrods logo on. Do they still sell them? Yes...fond memories indeed. Seeing this vid shows me how vastly its changed. X

I can believe it! I went to Harrod’s years ago and in the food hall at one of the bakery bits I was standing waiting and the staff were just in a huddle chatting and took ages to come over to serve me, then when the guy finally did he had such an attitude on him! I honestly don’t know his problem was but it was almost like how dare I want to buy a cake from his display! I think the customer service in Harrod’s really lets it down to be totally honest and especially in the food hall, I don’t even think their food is that nice, it’s definitely a case of style over substance!

In the 1980's and 90's I worked for an Oil Company Vitol in the old Bowater House over the road from Harrods which was demolished and is now 1 Hyde Park. Back then my and my girlfriend at the time lived in Bayswater and we used to get our weekly shop in Harrods. We got Meat\Fish Veg\Salads etc, Just a normal shop and it was not expensive. Now its all high profit processed food.

People always complain that some fresh item seems very expensive on a shop shelf, but you have to remember that most "fresh" items don't last long, are hard to make, and mostly go unsold and thrown in bins... so when you buy one plastic pot of strawberries, you are basically paying for the other ten identical pots that were made, unsold and thrown out... eg how much to make 20 pots, divided by how many sold on average = price for one pot, so when they sell 4 pots only, it covers cost of all 20!

After a day of touring, we were beat and it was great to just grab something to take back to our hotel and unwind. However, coming in the evening left us with many fewer choices because things had sold out. As a comment on the roast beef and horseradish sandwich, yes it is enormous, and my husband ended up saving half for breakfast. We also found some of the workers were just blah and acted like they wished we would go away, while others were friendly and just lovely. And it was very busy!

We had got to the second floor at Harrods when we approached by a member of staff who suggested that my bags looked as if they might break and here are nice large Harrod's bags to put them in. I did enjoy the tea and coffee counter, made better by getting my brother-in-law who worked there to get the staff discount Over 300,000 people visit Harrods each day. There are around 3,500 staff. When there was a bomb scare and the building evacuated people poured out blocking the entrance to the tube and the streets around.

Absolutely love the vlogs in Harrods. My Mum and I had a day in London in August and spent most of it in Harrods. You can literally spend the whole day in there, shopping and eating as we did and loved every second of it. I understand what you mean about the customer service in the food halls. I have experienced the staff being quite rude but it isn't the same in other departments in Harrods but which ever department that you are in you should be treated respectfully and with good manners. Harrods can let itself down with bad customer service, which should never be the case in such a premium department store, it should be the best in the world!

Hi Hannah. As always, loved this. I completely agree with you about the service in Harrods being patchy. I visit maybe twice a year and I always enjoy it but, honestly, as far as the food hall goes, while there are a few stand out options, I would hazard an opinion that M&S is far more consistently high quality across the board. I did take my 8 year old granddaughter to the toy floor in the summer though and we had an amazing staff member who actually boxed and ribboned her (fairly small) purchases for free! She felt very fancy 😂. On a side note for anyone who it’s relevant for, if you’re toy shopping in the heart of London, I’d advise skipping Harrods and Hamleys and heading straight to Selfridges toy department. Fantastic range and non ridiculous prices. Thanks for another great video 😊

Never married and one thing I am glad about is not being in charge of feeding anybody. When I look at how much of my married friends' lives has gone into just feeding their families - shopping, planning, cooking, clearing up, glancing at the clock and starting it all over again for the next meal - I'd have had to marry a millionaire and had a full-time cook. I so do not care about cooking. Occasionally, for a special reason or person, OK, but daily, three times a day... I sometimes wish we could just skip eating altogether. Seems like such an enormous expenditure of thought and energy just to stay alive.

Oh Hannah, loose leaf is so much more satisfying and delicious. Just get yourself a special mug with a top hat style strainer (the bigger the space for the tea the better so the leaves can open up) one teaspoon of tea leaves, then pour your hot water in like you would a teabag. Let it brew for 3-5mins depending on if it’s black tea or green tea. Take out the strainer and enjoy. OR a get your French press that you have for coffee, pop in one teaspoon of tea leaves, hot water in like you would usually. Then leave it brew and if it’s glass you’ll see the leaves all open up. Then pour like you would coffee from a French press. And the leaves are so strong you can get a second pouring. So just add in hot water again. You will start to love it! Keep the tea leaves out of direct sun light and heat (keep in tin) Try it 🤍

I feel your pain re the customer service. I think I commented on your last Harrods food hall video with the exact same experience. The customer service was SO bad and the people didn't even speak English very well. That tells me a lot about how the company treats the employees. If they treated them better and paid well they'd be able to provide the premium customer service the paying customer deserves. Especially when the prices are so over the top. Funny thing I had exactly the same experience with the lady at the chocolate counter. I think it was the same one. Such a wonderful person. BTW I'm still shocked that Harrods doesn't offer gluten free options. I mean these days many cafés and tea rooms in British small towns and villages offer gluten free options for gluten's sake! 😠

I think her attitude says a lot about what those who would back in the day frequent the higher class shop to be treated with respect and now get that same respect lower down the ladder instead, I think staff could treat all equally and help but for the tourist problem, not much they can do, its the cross they created and now have to bear.

My first time in Harrod’s was in 1976 when family friends encouraged me to stop by. My second time there was in 1991, when a Glaswegian friend and I were searching for Scotch eggs. After missing the Hyde Park Tube stop in my December 2023 visit, I got off at Knightsbridge and stopped by. I loved the expanded variety in the food department compared to my 1976 visit but other areas of the store seemed understaffed. I was tempted to get a sandwich but saved my stomach for a cod fillet and some ale at the Grenadier Pub. Based on the British Airways return trip to the U.S. in December, the Harrod’s bags (as well as Legos and Fortnum & Mason bags) are still popular with American tourists.

Not sure if someone answered this for you Hannah, squid or cuttlefish ink, is used in pasta-making (linguini, spaghetti , etc) to make it black; or in risotto recipes.

You need your own show on TV or Netflix....I’m thinking like Stanley Tucci’s “Seeking Italy”...something like Hannah Rickett’s “Uncovering London”...you would be excellent! ❤🇨🇦

So many memories for me when I lived in London. Lived in St. John’s Wood. Harrod’s is great during Christmas time. Thank you for this. Cheers!

I was pleasantly surprised at how affordable some of the food was, like the roast beef focaccia. I saw a review online and it's absolutely worth paying twice as much for that sandwich compared to a dismal stingy convenience-store sandwich. If I ever get the chance to visit London again, I'll check it out!

Hannah I agree with you 100% about the roller coaster of attitudes. One thing I must say though is every time I view your videos I feel a nice sense of happiness coming over me. Keep up the great videos! Steve

It’s fun to get 100 grams of various items to try. As a visitor it’s nice to have a picnic in the park and people watch or a little feast in your room.

It certainly isn't the Harrods that I remember from the early 80's, your video showed that it's looking a bit tired. As for the staff, well you find that in any large shopping complex around the world these days and it only takes one person to ruin your whole day. I love shopping with my husband, he can usually gets a grumpy shop assistant laughing by the time we leave the store. 😅

Thank you for bringing back great memories! I visited Harrods food hall on my regular business trips from US to London and loved a few morsels of hand made chocolates.

I was in Café Nero today and I tell you, these Harrods bakery treats are cheaper than those in Café Nero or just a £1 more. They are also far bigger, so overall, much better value for money!
