Greetings from Victoria! In today’s video, we bring you the final episode of our Vancouver Island road trip. After experiencing several days of torrential rains in the last few episodes, we’re happy to say that the sun came out to bid us farewell, which meant we had a really nice day visiting Butchart Gardens and exploring downtown Victoria.
Butchart Gardens are hardly a well-kept secret, but we can assure you that they are worth the hype! These are some of the most beautiful gardens we have ever visited and I, for one, spent the whole morning ooh-ing and ahh-ing at the beautiful displays.
I added the Sunken Garden to our Trover list, because who knew a former quarry could be transformed into something so beautiful?! You seriously can’t miss this place if you come to Victoria.
And now we’re going to take you to the Butchart Gardens’ Dining Room Restaurant, where we ordered afternoon tea for lunch! Oh, yes, that’s how we roll.
The menu featured scones with cream and jam, Cornish pasties, leek and cheese quiche, and savoury sandwiches with salmon, cucumber and egg salad. We also got a plate of delicious house-made sweets. It was all delectable and we tried to savour each bite to the max!
Arriving in Victoria was quite the contrast after spending the majority of our trip in the north part of Vancouver Island. It’s surprising how quickly we got used to being in small towns surrounded by forest, and all of a sudden we were in a city with traffic, and streetlights, and lots of people! Our senses were slightly overwhelmed, but we still had a nice time visiting the inner harbour and hitting up a few of the main attractions.
The British Columbia Parliament buildings are home to the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia. The buildings were constructed in the 1890s in a mix of renaissance, Romanesque and classical styles, and they are stunning. Once we set foot inside, we were wowed by the mosaic floors, the elegant dome and the beautiful stained glass windows. In short, it was a feast for the eyes! I also added this place to Trover because I didn’t even know the parliament buildings were open to the public, but it turns out they are, plus it’s free to visit, AND you can do a self-guided tour and go at your own pace.
After wandering along the harbour a bit longer, we decided to head back to the apartment because we had some leftover afternoon tea treats calling our name. We had a quick stop at Clover Point Park to snap some pictures and befriend the dogs out on their afternoon walk and that was the end of our day. But now some final thoughts on our two weeks on the island!
And that’s a wrap for our Vancouver Island road trip! Once again, we want to give a huge thank you to our partner Trover for making this trip possible. For those of you who are curious about all the places we visited on the island, I’ll link our Trover profile in the description below, with a list of all the places we went to. And if you missed an episode, we’ve also got a whole Vancouver Island playlist waiting for you on the end screen. Thanks again for watching and we’ll see you soon with more adventures!
Want to see EVERYWHERE we went on our 2-week Vancouver Island road trip? Here's the list with geo-tagged images so you too can visit these places: bit.ly/VancouverIslandList

Thank you! Yeah, it was a bit surreal filming on my home island but at the same time I've been gone for almost as long as I lived there, so it felt surprisingly like I was seeing certain parts of it for the 1st time.

We were in Victoria back in 2016 and loved it. Spent a week exploring and enjoying all the sights. Went to Butchart gardens and had the high tea, delicious. The most beautiful gardens in the world, spent the entire day there. We also went to the butterfly farm, which was different. I would have loved a tour up north but we didn’t have a car. Loved the harbour, waterfront area. We visited the museum as well, so interesting. Loved your video, one of my most favourite places in the world.

Samuel and Audrey - Travel and Food Videos I would love to come back to Canada but I am currently raising three grandchildren so I have to wait until I can get passports for them. Because they’re in the foster care system I have been fighting to get passports for them for four years and still not any luck. My granddaughter will be 18 in another year so she will be able to get her own and come with me.

Seeing a cougar in downtown Victoria is not that unrealistic. There have been a few of them removed over the years. One was carried out of the parking garage of the Empress Hotel in handcuffs. Sedated of course. Ask the staff at the Empress about it on your next visit. I recall other cougars killed in James Bay.

Accurate description. Mount Washington cool. Late 80’s, 90’s the Canadian airforce base at Comox. Many times those pilots were just above the mountain. You could see the pilots wave at you, if you were top of ski lift. Victoria changed considerably since 90’s. Too many people. The island has no industry other than tourism and government and a university, couple colleges. One time long ago, island had fishing, mining, and logging. Most of that is gone.
@samuelandaudrey
@samuelandaudrey 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Imtada! It sure has changed. I grew up in Gold River in the 80s and 90s and my Dad was a forester. Indeed, things sure have changed and we noticed it considerably busier now than in the past. My favorite part of the island is up north. You have the ruggedness without the population. Also, the only affordable real-estate at least from what we could see. Overall though, I really appreciated having a chance to come back. I haven't lived on the island since 99, so it meant a lot to revisit home again.

Hey Samuel and Audrey, I watched your videos before visiting Korea last year, and this year I plan to visit Canada. Thank you for your videos! Do you have a recommendation for a hotel in Vancouver? This is my first time to comment on any KZbinr ever, so I don't know if this is where I can send you a message about this :) Thanks in advance for your help and keep on making your videos!

Thank you very much Elle! That is exciting you'll be heading to Vancouver soon. We actually didn't stay in Vancouver and haven't visited that city in years. Personally, I'd have a budget in your mind which you comfortable paying per night and then check both booking dot com and airbnb to see whether you'll get more value from a rental apartment vs a hotel and then select a place that has great reviews.

@@samuelandaudrey From what city? I'm just wondering if you are aware you can visit Victoria in winter. There's a good chance it's milder than your home city? Where is that?
@scholarlyanalyst7700
@scholarlyanalyst7700 4 жыл бұрын
@@samuelandaudrey Some people think Victoria's all snow-and-blizzard in winter when, in fact, it is pretty much a snow-free climate. Of course, it gets the occasional snowfall - but then again...so does Dallas, Texas (where I live!). The fact is that many-a-winter transpires completely snow-free in both cities!

You were saying locals like to go a little over the speed limit......I think that is funny as I regularly see people go WAY over the speed limit. Thay post the largest speeds fines in the area. regular speeding tickets catch people going well over 100 in an 80 zone. The highest was a young teen who had just been given a present from his dad. A car that can go over 200 easy. What does he do? goes 240 in the 80 zone. Police took his car, took his license and fined his dad for letting him drive this very expensive car. Sadly, this is normal here.

If you're ever in one of those historical buildings and the earthquake hits . . . run. They are a structural death trap! and those windows at the Empress below ground or at ground level; they used to be much higher. She's been sinking since it was built.

Deer are an over-population problem on many of the area islands. I've spent a lot of time on Orcas Island (Washington State) and they are a problem there. We have to be VERY careful driving there.

We do not have a deer problem. Lol. Just because the odd one comes into someone's garden to eat. Doesn't mean there's a problem. That's the circle of life. You own nothing that grows from the earth. It belongs to every living thing.

they are implementing birth control here. I go to many houses in Victoria; the passionate gardeners/money, they are putting up fences 10ft high. I joke "deer here are often seen with black toques and MAG lights. They have pick axes and repelling grappling hooks."
