A cool study that I didn't include in the video directly gave human skin cells ergothioneine and exposed them to UV: "Our results suggest that L-ergothioneine not only prevents oxidative damage but also may enable *DNA repair* in the UV-irradiated cells." In this sense it could theoretically slow photoaging and reduce the risk of skin cancer. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19439218/ It's a pleasure making these vids for you guys and learning together!

Though I may add, the antioxidant theory of longevity enhancement has been largely discarded as a singular issue in the field. Antioxidant's serve purpose but I liken it to exercise effects upon muscle....stress to include oxidative damaged, remedied by oxidative reduction intake in dietary items but without the exercise no muscle growth what so ever. And anti oxidants directly after exercise found to limit muscle growth in response to exercise. As per example fasting producing longevity enhancement...a stress no antioxidants what so ever but oxidative damage still being produced by metabolic processes continuing. What is the mechanism clearly the stress, alternated then by anti oxidants consumed after the fast is concluded. This first shown perhaps in longevity reducing with increases in beta carotene and vitamin E in study. Anyway antioxidents by themselves without a stress component (some foods serve this in purpose querticine resveratrol) to excess may actually not enhance longevity at all. It iis a balance. but longevity specialty docs, typically not medical docs but researchers with doctorates, are qualified in this study and the current findings of this not plant docs nor common without this specialty nutritionists.

@@ronaldhumphreys8776Just humouring, but isn't it possible that even if 100 year olds or Adventists don't consume it and still got health benefits without it, consuming it could provide additional health benefits anyway?

Good vid. I commented a lot on ergo on the nutritionfacts forums around 2014-15, so maybe this vid is seeing the ping pong bounce around. As lapsed biochemist, the fact that there's an evolutionarily conserved ergo transporter is huge. It means that ergo joins vitamins C & E, and carotenoids (like beta-carotene, lycopene, lutein...) as the only well absorbed antioxidants. With respect to the flavonoids and other xenobiotic polyphenols, its possible that all their effects are not through the absorbed fraction, but through modulating the gut microbiota and hormetic effects at the liver. I'm really glad that the microbiome story rescued them, as its a much more plausible explanation for observed benefits of compounds the body actively rejects. The main thing I'm aware of that I think was missed here is that ergo, as an amphiphilic cation, is preferentially concentrated in the mitochondrial membrane, the major intracellular source of reactive species. In this, its not unlike those Russian research antioxidants from the early 2000s that were synthetic amphiphilic cation electron donors; except ergo is abundant in some foods, remarkably safe, and something which we evolved over hundreds of millions of years to depend on. I like mushrooms and make a point of eating some daily. I think they're the greatest omission from Dr. Greger's daily dozen. I especially like oyster and king trumpet mushrooms, the cultivated species with the highest levels of ergo, but I only get out to the Chinese grocer that carries these once a month.

Mushrooms are a great source of healthy umami, that savory flavor most people get from eating meat and cheese. Other sources are miso, seaweed (like nori snacks,) nutritional yeast, some fermented foods, and tomatoes. Umami is the key to finding a fully plant based diet satisfying from a taste standpoint.

Here's a soup that is easy to make and which I have been eating weekly for years. A box or two of organic vegetable broth. Add a good handful of dried porcini mushrooms. Add crushed red pepper to taste. add a dash of organic virgin olive oil. heat slowly from cold on low medium heat to a slow simmer. Allow to simmer, just below boiling for about fifteen minutes. add a half cup or so of organic french lentils that have been soaking in salt water. discard water before adding lentils. You want the lentils to cook for about 25 minutes total, so at about the 15 minute mark is time to add some cut up tempeh, cut up broccoli crowns or anything else that strikes your fancy. I especially like to add purple sweet potato noodles after breaking them in half. allow to cook an additional ten minutes. Make sure you make enough to refrigerate and enjoy for the next few days. To describe this dish as delicious functional food would do it no justice. Please note that substituting other mushroom types will definitely work but will not be nearly as delicious or as high in "vitamin L.

I am trying to figure this out too since the levels are so variable in mushrooms. The joint pain study gave people 500 micrograms of 0.5 grams per day of Ergothioneine. So assuming 1.8 mg/g for oyster mushrooms which from one of those studies which I believe is dry weight, it couldn't hurt to just have a serving of oyster or shiitake per day. Many unknowns though!

Two formulations of curcumin have been shown to cross the blood barrier. These are Longvida curcumin and CurQfen. They are able to do this because they keep curcumin in its free form, whereas other formulations of curcumin are rapidly metabolised into metabolites. I wish we had a study comparing supplements to mushrooms but with all of the added benefits of mushrooms I will go with mushrooms. However, if you someone is really trying to get those antioxidants ASAP then a supplement is probably best. Sometimes isolated antioxidants can backfire (Vitamin E for example) and some studies show that antioxidant pill taking in general doesn't help but maybe in this case since it is an amino acid it would be fine isolated. Great question.

This is making me think I ought to really find more ways to include mushrooms in my diet. I don’t eat them often. Tempeh, I don’t eat daily, but will nave up to twice a week. I wonder whether there are any other good sources of ergothionine? Would nutritional yeast have any, given that it’s also part of the fungi kingdom?

Buy a bag of dried shiitake or porcini mushrooms & just drop a couple in soups or stews when you are making them.

Can you do a video on the benefits on sunlight? I think following a great fear about skin cancer and spending more of lives inside due to work, TV and gaming (and possibly sheltering inside due to global warming) we are missing out on the huge benefit of sunlight - we weren't evolved to be troglodytes!

Mic: If I were going to cultivate porcini and lions mane mushrooms at home is there any way you know of that I could insure I am using spore lines that are rich in the components that are actually desired? According to your video there is a big difference in components of varieties of the same mushroom. How can we insure that we are starting with a potent strain?
@Erzant
@Erzant 10 ай бұрын
Porcini can't be grown at home really - they subsist on tree roots so the ability for us to grow them at home is going to be either impossible or so limited that you won't produce enough of them to make the effort worthwhile. So your best bet would be to grow lions mane, shiitake, and/or oyster and add Methionine while growing them.

I have a question about that, if you don’t mind. Is the livestock industry at the root of this by reducing dingoes for the sake of sheep? Is there something more involved? Why is there a problem now and not for the millions of years before? I know, so many questions, but I’m not from there and am curious.

Just stop being a picky eater. It's that easy. Try a 10 fast out in the wildness. You'll learn a new found gratitude for any food whatsoever. The problem probably lies in what else you are eating, e.g. milky, sugary foods, cake etc.
