I had not previously considered forming a V with the cane during the growing season (while it is still in the trellis), so that the auxins begin accumulating in the base of the V prior to layering it in the dormant period. Your photo just made me realize the potential usefulness of doing so.

I searched the vine related video and yours came out which I found it so informative in the way helping me grasping the key points from the textbook fast. don't know the comments could still reach you but really want to say thank you. are you still producing the same subject of video? really hope so.

We have just got two young grape vines. We are going to grow the vines at the side of our house. I have put wire up the side to train the vine.

Can you use this process of layering in making a new vine and then dig it out to put it in a another location? By the way I like how this is done.
@credenza12 жыл бұрын
Yes. It is a very useful way of propagating new vines. You can do so in the spaces between vines even when none is missing.

the problem with air layering is the roots are pot bound in a circle thatis the reason i use a 5 gal bucket much longer vine with larger root ball.

When to fill the hole with dirt?
@frankdavidson96755 жыл бұрын
i think this a very good idea also if you wanted to put the new vine elsewhere you could loop it in and out of a tub or 5 gal bucket that way you want distrub the roots just cut from mother vine lift out of the bucket and go plant it just use good potting soil in the bucket

I appreciate the videos. They are like a treasure chest for me, just discovered them. This year I decided to take control of some grape vines that have been growing wildly on my parents property. They are Concord grapes I believe and I've actually harvested some this year! I am watching this video and I'm trying to decide if I should buy new plants or try layering them. The vines are RIGHT on the property line and on the edge or a slope that makes them inconvenient to harvest, and also just really messy and jumbled. I want to move them about 3 feet closer so I can take better care of them. So, is buying new plants the way to go, or layering?

How well do they perform when the original has a different root-stock?
@frankdavidson96755 жыл бұрын
i think the root stock will be like mother plant you are cloning which is the same everything
@credenza12 жыл бұрын
It depends on the variety of grape and the environment. Some will do very well on their own roots. It would also depend on the presence of soil pests such as phylloxera, where some rootstocks provide protection.

This method is not good for european vitis vinifera, what about filoxera?
@thechaosgardener4 жыл бұрын
Works great on red flame seedless Vitis vinifera. I started with a wilted discount vine from Walmart for $3 and now have a dozen vines across my backyard by laying and cuttings

@@thechaosgardener I am not saying that don't work this method, but the problem is disease of filoxera. Vitis vinifera (europian grapes) doesn't resist if it's not grafted on a rootstock. This method is ok for American varieties
