My theory is that the kid did not know that they were filming. He probably was thinking that he was just playing around with Brando. That's probably why the kid acts in such a natural matter.
@MGJ07289 жыл бұрын
You're right - Coppola gave Brando basic instructions about how he'd like the scene to go, and Brando improvised the rest. The kid is called Anthony Gounaris in real life, and had no idea that the cameras were rolling. He'd also respond better to his own name. So they decided in the movie he'd be called Anthony Corleone. One of the best improvised scenes ever filmed I think. I believe Coppola explains these facts in his commentary during this scene on the DVD.

He was a brutal, calculating mobster on the one hand, but on the other a pillar of his community and a devoted, loving husband and father. It up to the individual to decide if Don Corleone’s redeeming qualities outweigh the less than morally stellar things he did. I can at least respect that everything he did, he did for family. In point of fact, the book was very poorly written. There were even typos. I have read it in print, and I have listened to the audible version. The good part about the audible version is that most of the actors agreed to read their own lines from the script. The bad news is that the Italian was poorly pronounced. I speak Italian, so I know.
@abhijitmajee67544 жыл бұрын
In the book, there were few lines which so beautifully described death and Vito in perspective of death. It said that you would never hear Vito talking about Death as if he respected Death too much to philosophise about it. Further, in the book, Vito takes his last breath in the arms of his most loved son, Michael, saying "Life is so beautiful". These final moments changed everything in Michael and he never again doubted the respect for his father.

This scene is so powerful due to the fact that it shows, despite living his life of which was full of money, power, control and bloodshed, he was able to pass away in a state of paternal innocence and tranquility, by simply playing and joking around with his grandson. It goes to show that no matter what we may do in life, no matter the purpose for which we do things, good or bad, there is still an innocent piece of us that we leave behind and the way he died by being with his grandson, as opposed to dying on the street or anything that has to do with his former life and business, is just a perfect moment in itself. I think this scene shows that aspect of life off, wonderfully. Beautiful.

It's not just Michael's horrible actions against his family that let his lonely death. The truth is time has changed, so did people's expectations and priorities. When Michael was young he didn't want to get involved with family business. He had his own dreams to follow. But in the time of need, he compromised and unwillingly took care of his family. Didn't he like the power? Yes, he did. But that was not what he wanted from life at first place. However the times he were born into was different. A time when you put your responsibilities before your dreams. A time when family comes first. Michael's children on the other hand belonged to a 'more American' world. They were raised by an american woman who couldn't relate what Michael had to do.They just wanted to do their own thing and didn't want to do anthing with the business- just like young Michael. And they did it. They didn't care about family. Things might have been different if Apollonia was still alive.
@franjes99994 жыл бұрын
To theyre the same excluding one thing Michael was absent of the type of warmth that any of his family members had he was the coldest and cruelest even on a personality level than all of them. Killing Fredo, killing Carlo (as huge a piece of shit as he was) Roth, Tessio none of those people ever would’ve thought to betray Vito because he was more than just cunning and intelligent but he was warm he loved the family and the people in it and even some outside it. Michael inspired no such loyalty partially because he was in the shadow of his father, he was young when all these people who were loyal to his father were old and used to Vitos way of doing business, he didn’t garner the same respect as Vito but also because he was absent of any of the warmth or friendliness that Vito, Fredo and even Sonny had. He was smarter than all of them but the absence of that warmth was always going to mean he could only run the family in a far more ruthless way than his father and as a result their demises came in totally different ways

He treated everyone with the upmost sincerity and respect, and I believe he had a genuinely good heart (no pun intended). Look here, as he innocently plays with his grandson, laughing and just kinda being a cute nice old Grampa, enamored by his young grandsons cuteness. Michael on the other hand, did it all with a sense of evil and greed. If you watch any scene of Mike and his kids, he's either solumnly focused on his business or screaming at their mother. Actually this heart attack happened suddenly to Vito. The boy chased him up with that watering can, and it was a hot summer day, and it's not a big surprise that the heart attack happened to him. He was 64-68 years old, so that's a pretty respectable age. Still better than getting shot and killed by rival family's goons.

Plus the lifestyle in those days. Most people smoke and drank to excess in the 1940s through to the 60s, because back then, there were not nearly (if any) as many health warnings when it came to that stuff

Now compare this scene to Michael´s death at the end of part III. Despite of all his concerns Vito dies peacefully and in happiness, in a set that looks like a glimpse of paradise (see last shot), whereas Michael dies all alone, immobilized, silent, full of doubt and grief, in a set that looks like purgatory on earth. Both scenes are masterpieces, both give me goosebumps every time I watch them.

Yeah, especially with what Vito had to go through, he didn’t have the chance of being a kid because the crimes of his hometown and his family being whacked by the mafia and had to go to America, in New York, and a lot of years later, he killed Don Fanucci for Power and Respect and had become a Don, and then he went back to Sicily, Italy to kill Don Ciccio for Revenge and then a lot years later after that he became old and had been shot down but survived and then he lived a easy life with his family , something he didn’t have in the beginning of his life, one of the greatest characters of cinema history

i watched this movie today for the first time ever. and i have never respected a fictional character like I respected Vito Corleone a true man who values family above all else. When i watch this scene i thought something was going on, when i saw him fall down i felt so bad, yet so happy he died of natural cause playing with his grandson, better than getting killed. this movie without a doubt its a perfect masterpiece.

The Godfather is one of my two favorite films and THIS is my favorite scene. Too many films glamorize criminals and killers but watching this “beloved” criminal/murderer die and seeing his grandson spraying him with bug killer while completely oblivious of his condition was what really made me respect it. The scene was both profound and courageous.

Vito got into crime business to support his family, and he never forgot that motivation. Had the drama with Brazini didn’t happen, he would have at least one of his children live a clean slate, that would have been Michael. He knew that Sonny and Fredo would make bad don and sink the family business, yet he didn’t groom Michael into that position. He was even willing to abandon the work he had built in New York to move to Nevada in order to ensure the plan to avenge his family go through without retaliation. It’s poetic when you know that his grandson whom he spent the last moment with playing, Anthony, would break away from the family crime business and live a normal life, returning to his forefather’s land as an opera singer.

Yes, he dies in his garden, with his grandchild, at peace. All his life he was always a soldier, climbing up from utter vulnerability and poverty, defending his loved ones against murderous greed and corruption; the child, dashing away, represents Vito's soul, released and refreshed. ~~ His son, Michael, never knew the humanity his father knew: he failed to protect his loved ones; Michael dies alone, prostrate on sun-baked, stony ground, with only the dogs to sniff at him.
@Brad-il9mw4 жыл бұрын
Vito was the gangster that created Michael. When he killed the first Don he became the don. He stole the carpet he is not a good guy. He is Human and for all that he did he fell amongst the tomatoes. Michael became the big man Vito wanted. It is however all vanity.
