Anyone who thought that Vivaldi didn't understand (and couldn't write) counterpoint will find this illuminating. Easy to see why Bach was so interested in this great and endlessly fascinating Italian master. Also, despite the incredibly high standard of Voices of Music and their distinguished service to higher international understanding of music, this video presentation is at the very top: exemplary in performance, presentation and recording. Thanks, as always, to Hanneke, David and all of their wonderful colleagues. PW

I agree. I had a debate once with our conductor that Bach is a fan of Vivaldi and his famous counterpoint technique was, as well, much inspired from Vivaldi's works. He didn't agree until I showed all Bach's transcribed Vivaldi compositions and this very piece where counterpoint is very prominent.
@opus4rv2 жыл бұрын
@@grm7237 It your conductor didn't know that then she should find another profession. The thing about Vivaldi's music is that it does leave room for interpretation and improvisation because of his beauty in simplicity.

Vivaldi often sounds much like Bach, but probably it is the other way round! ;-)
@Rik772 жыл бұрын
Agreed about vivaldi. All musicians were trained in counterpoint then. I would say vivaldi knew how to do it (there are some great fugues in his choral works), but chose not to generally. He wasn't particularly interested in it. Composers later than him also followed him in this and were more interested in single molelodies with accompaniment.

Totally masterful! And the only performance I've heard so far that does the *spiccato* properly. I especially love the headlong rush in the opening movement!

I often feel that Vivaldi's musical genius reaches its zenith in the slow middle movements of his concertos for strings. The melodies contained therein are often exquisitely beautiful, with an unearthly and indeed spiritual quality, to an extent not seen in other baroque composers. The quality of performance of the Voices of Music ensembles does justice to what I believe was Vivaldi's original intention in writing this music. This concerto is an excellent example of what I am talking about.

I was listening to a radio program today that had on a nice piece I thought might be Vivaldi, but it wasn't, Telemann oh well. I see this on my suggested list and clickety click, here I am to now write this appreciation of an otherwise unknown work of Vivaldi's (to me if no one else). Lovely short little movements and such a bright and sprightly piece. Just what this day needed. Thank you. EDIT: Very very nice on a 3rd listen. Adding this to my fave list. The ladies certainly were fast and furious at times but in keeping with the piece. I wish I had been at this concert.

It is one of life's mysteries how Vivaldi, Bach, Beethoven and other great composers were able to write such complicated music out by hand without developing carpel tunnels...these days, we have computer software, but this is a relatively recent development...I've tried to replicate one of Bach's scores by writing it out myself, but my hand gave up on me before long...

I know this concerto from a short film called 'The Magic Violin,' from 1998. It was a biography of Vivaldi's life, interspersed with two of his concerti: the Concerto for Oboe in C Major, RV 447; and this one. In between movements, the narrator told Vivaldi's story. The movements of the concerti themselves were played over stylized, choreographed scenes. For example, the first movement of the oboe concerto was played to female dancers portraying the girls at the *_Ospedale della Pietà,_* where he taught music. The third movement was preceded by a spoken bit about *_commedia dell'arte._* The movement then played over a *_commedia_* scene featuring Harlequin *_(Arlecchino)_* and *_Columbina_* foiling *_Pantalone._* At the end, after telling how Vivaldi died in poverty in Vienna, it ended with the third movement of this concerto played over a stylized scene of gravediggers digging in a graveyard embedded with instruments and musical score sheets. It was incredibly moving.
