I decided to try out all my new Vivid Holo Dust mica powders from Island Micas & More, and to try my new coaster and tray set that someone gifted me! This video is the result. Other than not mixing my black oxide mica well enough in the resin before pouring, resulting in black pits in my otherwise lovely tray, I think this whole set turned out really beautifully!
Check out some of the items I've made, listed in my Etsy store:

Materials used in this video*:
KS Art Resin: bit.ly/2N4JX3i (Coupon Code "LuxSwirl" for 5% discount)
Black oxide mica: islandmicasand...
Vivid Holos mica: islandmicasand...

I love Swirls! Mostly swirls of color, but really any swirls at all - I think they add a beauty and grace to everything. So after I started making soap a few years ago, and needing some sort of biz name that didn't sound like everyone else's version of suds-r-us, I decided on Luxinda Swirl. Luxinda is a twist on my real name, and I quickly started putting swirls of color in all of my handmade soaps.
Now I'm branching out a bit, and I want to keep adding swirls to everything I do!

Thank you!! I think I added too much of the matte black mica powder then didn't mix it in well enough, so there were teensy clumps of it that settled to the bottom of the molds, which became the surface of the coasters. Not a horrible thing, but something to be aware of when adding mica.

They are beautiful!! if you spray your alcohol into your mold before you pour in resin, it wll help eliminate the bubbles also (at least 90 percent better) just love them....

These mandalas turned out so beautiful! Love the idea of putting some acrylic paint over the top to bring out the pattern more. Just bought a mandala mold and anxious to try this when it arrives. The more we learn the more there is to know! Thanks for sharing!

I love how your coaster & tray set came out! 😍😍😍 I have this set too, but I’ve only made coasters using different colors of resins. I think the bubbles are just going to have to be a design element because I can’t keep them out of the tiny crevices. I dust my domino molds with baby powder before pouring the resin to prevent bubbles, and I may try that next time I use these molds to see if it will work on them too. Even with the bubbles, they’re still pretty.

Try placing them on a board and then gently lift the board slightly then drop to try to dispel bubbles. I've not heard anyone use talcum powder like that, does it not stick into the resin like the mica colours?
@OG_Beckie_Leigh
@OG_Beckie_Leigh 3 жыл бұрын
@@amethyst1826 I'd never heard of using the baby powder either, and I was a bit concerned about how the finish would be. Using a shiny mold that's lightly dusted with powder, the resin's finish ended up with SLIGHTLY less shine than without using the powder. It doesn't stick like mica powder at all. I don't think anything sticks to everything like mica powder. That stuff can make a mess that's not easy to clean! LOL. And, I totally agree about using a board or tray to help bounce the bubbles out of the resin. My son regifted me a pair of vibrating house slippers that he received as a gag gift. I keep wanting to cut them apart to see if the motors will work to vibrate the bubbles up to the surface. 🤔😂
@amethyst1826
@amethyst1826 3 жыл бұрын
@@OG_Beckie_Leigh Won't the slippers vibrate boards if sat beside them? Or if enough space on the boards you could lay them next to your moulds.
@OG_Beckie_Leigh
@OG_Beckie_Leigh 3 жыл бұрын
@@amethyst1826 I’m not sure. They’re quite fuzzy. It’s been so long since I put batteries in them that I can’t remember whether the entire bottom foam can be removed or not. If that’s the case, then I can just slide that out rather than cutting the slipper apart. My mom has one of those vibrating exercise platforms that I know she isn’t using. I’ve also thought about bringing that to my house to set my mixing cup and/or molds on. That thing will quite literally shake the poop out of a person. Surely it can release all of the bubbles from epoxy. 😂

Oohhh they came out nice! I don’t have all those micas you do, but wonder if brushing in a layer of holographic nail powder before pouring in black resin would make a “poor man’s version” of the stunners you created? Must try and find out, thanks!

Honestly, I think it’s the same thing - my understanding is they’re both micas. So definitely give it a try!

How do you clean your molds out from the mica powder, once you have finished?
@Luxinda
@Luxinda 2 жыл бұрын
It kind of depends on the fragility of the mold. The white-ish molds that come from places like Amazon are quite tough, so I’ll use soap and water and a soft brush. More delicate handmade molds (usually from Etsy sellers and often aqua colored with very shiny inside surfaces that scratch easily, should be just soap and water. Another option is a cheapo play-doh that can be pressed in and pulled back out, usually with the leftover mica stuck on it.
