Thank you for uploading these pictures. Hugo Vickers' biography of Vivien Leigh includes a beautiful letter written by Suzanne to her grandmother, Gertrude Hartley, thanking her for raising her in Vancouver, BC during WWII. Also, the blog "Viv And Larry" has a film of Sophie Farrington, Vivien's great granddaughter, traveling about to learn more about her great grandmother --to MGM, where she meets a son or grandson of David O. Selznick; and to Tickerage Mill, Vivien's last home where her ashes are scattered on the pond, where she meets Tarquin, Olivier's son with Jill Esmond. It's a sweet film.

Great tribute! I first became familiar with Vivien when I saw Waterloo Bridge. She was such a delight. Its too bad more people my age aren't familiar with these great actors of the past. I'm 23 by the way.

Suzanne Mary Holman Farrington died on March 1, 2015 at the age of 81 years. She was predeceased by her husband, Robin. She lived a very private life and raised three sons. She is survived by all three sons, and twelve grandchildren, so Vivien Leigh has twelve Great-Grandchildren the oldest of whom are in their mid and early twenties as of this writing. Suzanne's father, Leigh Holman was thirty-three years old when he married Vivien Leigh. Vivien had just turned nineteen years old a few weeks prior to their marriage. Suzanne was born before their first anniversary, so Vivien was still only nineteen years old when her daughter was born. She was probably even less prepared to be a mother at nineteen years of age than I would have been at that age! Additionally, Vivien did not have a "normal" childhood as she was basically raised in an English convent school from the age of six years on with very little interaction with her parents who were living in India. In fact she did not see them on a regular basis until she turned 14 years of age at which time her formal schooling was over, and they set about touring the continent with her. Therefore, I have to say I do not think Vivien's role model for "mothering" was particularly strong. Viven's mother, Gertrude Hartley, did in fact help a great deal in the raising of Suzanne. I have to wonder if she ever had any regrets about leaving her own child (Vivien) at a convent school so far from home. Leigh Holman, Suzanne's father was a wonderful, forgiving man who enjoyed a life-long sort of brother/sister relationship with Vivien for the duration of her life. He had custody of Suzanne for her entire childhood from the time Vivien left him to Suzanne's adulthood. In fact, he was a stalwart supporter of Vivien Leigh's and she often spent her birthday with him after Olivier left her for Joan Plowright. Suzanne was certainly not impaired mentally in any way!

+Lizzy Lou Vivien Leigh struggled and suffered with bipolar her entire life and her daughter was very fortunate not to have had that gene passed to her. I just wonder if any of her grandchildren have it. I have bipolar and it skips one generation. For example I have bipolar - my mother did not - but my grandmother did

That's right. Vivien's lonely childhood and absent parents probably molded her own distant relationship with her daughter. You tend to raise children the way you were raised.That's why I'm glad I never had any children. I would be a bad parent. No patience and unaffectionate. Just the way my parents were to me. I'm 60 now and both my parents died 2 and 3 years ago. I've come to accept them as parents and think they did the best they could.I never knew 3 of my grandparents so I have no idea how they were raised.Also my parents were 87 and 95 when they died.Born in a very different time than now.Got off the subject of Vivien a bit, but I think emotional coldness to others is learned behavior. I was taught very well!! Love Vivien and I feel sorry for her.

I remember a reporter once telling Suzanne that she didn't look anything like her mother, with that Suzanne laughed and said; Thank God for that! Suzanne and Vivien had a strained relationship early on, which got better once Suzanne got older and started having children. Towards the end of Vivien's life both mother and daughter enjoyed a much better relationship. I'm glad over that since Vivien seemed so alone (yes I know about John Merivale) towards the end of her life.
@terrihilder8217
@terrihilder8217 3 жыл бұрын
From what I have read, Vivien Leigh was blessed with many good friends that stayed with her through thick and thin. Merivale was a great help to her and a great friend to her in her last years. Merivale was there for her. That's a big deal. That's not being alone.

@feelgoodbeats9376
@feelgoodbeats9376 6 ай бұрын
I think part of that strained relationship was due to the cruel comparisons of the media. If someone shouted out to me that I looked nothing like my mother, meaning it as an insult, I’d probably come out with something snide too on the spur of the moment. Suzanne was probably envious of and intimated by Vivien in a way, which would be a very natural reaction to her circumstances. We tend to scorn that which we are made to feel inferior to

very interesting to see Vivien's daughter and see her downline on the computer. What an amazing legacy to be a part of. Talk about mixing british and American royalty together with Vivien's history. I never knew the woman since I was born after she died, But her life is amazing and I totally get her. I also suffer from Bipolar. She has the passion and the fire I feel everyday. What an honor it must be for her family to say that they are related to her.

I love the great actresses and actors of her generation. I grew up on their movies, watching them on television when I was a child in the '50s. This video really brought Vivian closer to me than ever before, a glimpse into her off-screen life. I'll never forget seeing a theatrical re-release of Gone With The Wind in the early '70s. Vivian came across on the big screen as powerful as a Force Of Nature.

Miss Holman was extremely lovely, with fine bone structure. I wonder if she kept herself on the dowdy side (overweight, with unglamorous clothes or hair) because she felt at an early age she shouldn't, or couldn't, compete with her mother? There is a stunning woman under there...she just needed to lose some weight, grow her hair out, pick up an eyebrow pencil, and ask her mom to take her to the Better Dresses department of a good store. I can tell she's very pretty.
