Vivien Leigh - Academy Awards Best Actress 1940 / 1952 (photos and footage)

This a small montage we made to put together the two occasions when British actress Vivien Leigh won an Oscar.
Includes photo stills and footages of both 1940 and 1952 Academy Awards ceremonies. Features also footage of Vivien listening to the live radio broadcast of the 1952 ceremony from her dressing room in New York, where Sir Laurence Olivier and his then Lady were playing the 'Caesar & Cleopatra' and 'Antony & Cleopatra' in Broadway. It finishes with a photo still of the moment when she was personally given her second award in London that year.

Vivien Leigh did not age that badly she was still attractive, but in her prime nobody could beat her beauty and the best Actress to come out of England.

I wish there was more color photos of Vivien at the Oscars in 1940. I would love to see what her dress actually looked like in color. It is hard to tell from the black/white footage/pictures. Does anyone know what color the dress actually was?

Hello: Yes, thank you. I did have a chance to view your Facebook page and I saw the posting of pictures with Vivien on the night of the Oscars in 1940. The one color picture is there, however it is hard to see the actual color of the dress. Not enough fabric is exposed to see what color it is. Also Larry's hand and his glass are blocking it partially. For what is exposed - it is small amount (and maybe it is the lighting or the distortion of the photo), but I can’t determine the color. I’ve seen the dress in so many black and white photos and it seems so vibrant of a pattern. I know the stems are green and the flowers are red poppies, but it is hard to imagine what color the dress is against the print.

you are quite right. I'm going to ask a around my fellow experts friends to see if they can confirm the colour. I'd like to say that it was green as it would have complimented her eyes perfectly. As soon as I get more info, I'd let you know.

Thank you so much. It would be nice to see if anyone knows for sure, etc. I must say Vivien was so pretty and the style of the dress is so nice . . . one could wear it today . . . she must of looked stunning that night. It would be interesting if a replica of the dress could be created today.

Been a fan since I was a kid in the 80s. Loved her in "GWTW","Waterloo Bridge" and "That Hamilton Woman. She was very unique in looks, talent and charm. loved her profile, her smile,her plump cheeks and her expressive grey green eyes. She had a kind of sadness and vulnerability about her. I will be honest though, didn't care much for her later films. She seemed to have aged rather early . It must have been all that bipolar stuff ,drinking binges and cigarettes. Was not a fan of "Streetcar" She wasn't the pretty young thing in that film. I know she was trying to prove her acting chops in competing with her then husband Olivier. I much prefer watching her in her younger days. Oh yeah...kind of liked "St Martin's Lane" ...really cute in that pre "GWTW role.
