As an Elizabeth Taylor fan I must admit that Vivien Leigh is so so beautiful and talented. Both actresses had a lot in commun, both played Cleopatra, Tennessee Williams plays inspired films and were both married to british stage actors. One is my favourite actress and the other plays an amazing role in my fovourite fim, Gone with the wind.

I love the opening! Rachel's Song from Bladerunner with the raindrops effect is perfect with Vivien sleeping! And with the night stars it fits perfectly! Vivien is so feline as Cleopatra...and you capture that essence! Perfectly dream-like! Brilliantly done! (I just wonder why Claude Rains was Caesar...)

I saw this when I was little. I didn't know Vivien was in it. All I remember thinking was that Cleopatra was so beautiful. I think her skin was showned so light and glowing in the film b/c I once read that Cleopatra's skin was light because she took milk baths. I tried it, took milk baths every day for over a month. I got so light that my mom thought I was sick. Had to stop because she was planning on taking me to the hospital.

Leigh has grown on me, as I have seen more of her films. "Gone with the Wind" and "A Streetcar Named Desire"...as great as they are...are only an intro to her work. She's a major classic actress. I like her much better than Hepburn...who I slowly, have come to conclusion has been overrated.

A documentary mentioned that she slipped while filming a scene in this movie and miscarried a baby. The director mentioned that the shock and trauma was funneled into her character which helped in transforming her Cleopatra from light-hearted teen to jaded cynical woman in a short time span

In view of all the comments I have to weigh in with impartial judgement. Vivien is my favorite actress of all time, due to her Scarlett O'Hara, but both Liz Taylor and Ava Gardner were truly her equal in beauty--you need to see Liz at age 19 to fully realize this. Cleopatra is the only chance to see Vivien in glorious Technicolor while young after GWTW, whereas Liz was almost always in color. Only one actress ever could vie with the others as perfectly beautiful, Hedy Lamarr, but she made few films in color and no great ones. Greta Garbo was just as photogenic, Marilyn Monroe and Clara Bow were just as 'pretty', but they lacked timeless classic perfection of beauty, and Grace Kelley was just too bland, though perfect in her way, and Carmel Myers and Dolores Costello are hardly remembered. In short, Vivien should get more exposure than she got after GWTW to appreciate her as a good actress--she appeared on the stage in lost performances and made only 17 films. See 'Waterloo Bridge' and 'That Hamilton Woman' with Olivier as further proof of her style, elegance, and b/w beauty.

agree, I would not stop at ava and liz, but there were many beautiful women back in the day that could rival Vivien's. Except there was something magnetic about Vivien..a strength that shines through, a charisma of sorts, she had impressive, sharply-cut features and not to mention, unbelievable milky white skin. There was something truly sphinx-like about her, she did not seem like one of those actresses that were doing it for the attention or for receiving male attention and validation, Vivien had a dignified appearance in everything she did, even in Streetcar named desire, where she was supposed to be this woman of loose morals, she somehow gave Blanche this very human essence that made you pity her as a lost soul.
